[Elecraft] K2s looking for a new home

2021-07-05 Thread Albin Stigö
Hi,

I have 2 K2s immaculately built and documented by Clemed Nilsson
SM7DRH (sadly SK).

I received them in a trade. I repaired them (swapped 2 latching relays
and replaced 2 potentiometers) and tested them and they work very
well.

Serial no: 288 (pretty much all extra options that I'm aware of
including a Heil mic and internal ATU and CAT) and a firmware update.

Serial no: 5183 no extras

Because of other projects I don't get to use them as much as they
deserve. I don't know if there's still any interest in these rigs? But
it'd be nice if someone could put them to better use than I can.

If you are interested, give me a fair offer/trade and I'm willing to
part with them.

QTH is Göteborg southwest Sweden.

Kind regards,
Albin SM6WJM

Re: [Elecraft] K2s

2016-06-25 Thread lstavenhagen
Besides the parts access issues, another consideration is keeping it
buildable. If the K2 were to be updated any further, it might go out of
reach as a buildable-by-mortal-hams kit with discrete components. In fact,
there are compromises in the rig already to keep it easy to build, I'm
thinking the synthesizer circuitry for example. You'd have to basically do
what Elecraft has already done, which is go to more of a
final-assembly/no-solder kit so that the touchier parts of construction
could be done at the factory, etc. Else, we'd have to start doing SMT
soldering, or just an endlessly complicated kit that would take absolutely
forever to build and require esoteric or expensive tools, etc.

So as-is, the K2 is already about the top of the line in terms of what you
get performance/features-wise in a kit that even ham-fisted (so to speak)
builders like myself can actually build and have a working rig at the end of
it.

I've built two copies of the K2 so far, but I think I'm done for now lol.
These should last me for the duration. But if you're thinking of building
one, probably best to do it sooner rather than later while Elecraft can
still get parts...

LS

Re: [Elecraft] K2s

2016-06-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

Robin,

I understand about your pleasures of the K2, but I doubt you will see
any more upgrades to the K2. Just enjoy it as it is right now (unless
yours could use the upgrade kits that are available).

Parts for the K2 are becoming harder and harder to source, but Elecraft
has done a magnificent job of trying to keep up with alternatives as the
availability of the original parts has vanished. A few that I have been
involved with are the substitution of the speech processor on the KSB2
option, the unavailability of SA612 ICs in DIP format, and the lack of
trimmer capacitors that were used in the past (which created the demise
of the K1 4 band board).

I am not sure how much longer the K2 can "hang in there" as a new kit
with the world switching to SMD components and leaving the thru-hole
components behind as obsolete. Time will tell, but what I am saying is
that Elecraft has made successful substitutions so far, but there will
be a day when that is no longer possible. I also hate to think of the
time when proper replacement parts for the K2 are no longer available,
but I do see "the writing on the wall".

So to ask for improvement for an 18 year old design may be asking for
more than can be reasonably accomplished at a desirable price point.

For QRP contesting, and scanning the bands for signals, nothing beats the

Theodore Roosevelt famously said, "Do what you can, with what you have,

The K2 is an outstanding rig. Besides, you built it yourself (just like I
did 16 years ago).

It's not just the fun of building it, it's also the fun of using a radio you
built yourself. It's nice to be able to undrrstand and appreciate the design,
which is harder with the KX3 since the most interesting parts are locked away
out of sight in proprietary code.
One feature I really like about the K2 is you can plug in paddles, straight
keys, bugs etc. all connected in parallel and the K2 will automatically detect
which is which.

Re: [Elecraft] K2s

2016-06-24 Thread EricJ
In my case, the form factor is a huge consideration. Having the knobs on
the top makes sense for a trail-friendly radio that sits on your lap or
a nearby rock, but it is not, at least for me, the best ergonomics for a
base station. Putting it on a plastic tilting stand doesn't change that.

Cabling is another big factor. I like cables coming out the rear, not
sprouting from all sides. It makes sense on a TFR, but not so much in a
base station where other gear abuts it.

Believe me, I'm not knocking the KX3 as I've never owned or operated
one. I've never even seen one except in pictures. I had a KX1 and it was
always the last radio I picked up to take camping. (K1 was the first).
It was more of a hangar queen for me. I just never enjoyed using it, but
I never really used it as a trail-friendly radio which is what it was
designed to be. The K1 was much more comfortable to use sitting in a
campsite tuning the radio while I poked at the campfire. Based on form
factor, the KX3 was never a consideration for me and neither is the KX2
(certainly the ultimate TRF) for the same reason.

I have two K2/10s with KPA/KATU in EC2 box (SN567 and 6911), and just
about every internal accessory. I didn't build any of it so the fun of
building is irrelevant to me. I like them because they are very
competent, reliable, wonderfully supported, even traditional radios that
suit me. That's enough.

The K2 is unique! I built mine eleven years ago. It's still very much up to
date. Of course I operate with a couple of Drake twins sometimes! I added the
modules as they became available. I don't chase DX, or work contests (except
field day) so I don't find any need for the K3. Now the KX3 is another story.
It might be my intro into the next generation rig.

In my case the choice to buy the K2 was simple. The K2 is a battery
friendly, high performance, customizable, radio that is more compact
than the K3. Because I built it myself I'd feel more comfortable
troubleshooting and repairing it. Although the kit is complex, most of
the parts are commonly available, relatively easily replaced, and the
assembly manual is exceptionally good. There is component level
support online, and if you live outside of the continental US you have
much better chances of repairing it or installing
modifications/upgrades yourself without the expense of shipping it
across borders to have it cued up in the repair shop behind other units
in for repair. There are other reasons to buy it, such as the
challenge of building an exceptional kit, and so forth.

attributed to incorrect alignment of circuits during build, inadequate
shielding of CAT cables and bus interconnect cables. The K100 higher power
levels
will also have proportionately higher levels of 'corruption'. A damaged or
poorly working interface cable from the K2 basic to the K100 bus panel can be
picked up on the transmitted signal. Running a KW will certainly take any of
the above and make it that much worse, hence a small almost unnoticeable tweak
at the base level can make a big difference after 12 db of amplification.

We now use two K3s, amps at 500w output.
The K3s are so clean that we can operate within 3 kHz of 1st harmonic on CW.
No clicks, no de-sense, no phase noise - happy contesters.

[Elecraft] K2s in SO2R mode for SS CW

2005-11-07 Thread Bob Evans
I had my first full bore outing with my pair of K2/100s in SO2R mode. They
did an amazing job of not bothering each other when transmitting on adjacent
bands. I augment band separation with a pair of I.C.E. 419 automatic band
filters, but the K2s do most of the work themselves. It is particularly
impressive when you look at my antenna system which consists of phased
tri-band quads at 75 and 40 feet, a 2 element 40M yagi at 80 feet, a 2
element 40M quad at 60' fixed northwest and an 80M dipole at 70'. The K2s
allow me to transmit (CQing) on one band of my quads while listening (search
& pouncing) on adjacent bands of the same quad.at the same time. I've even
cranked up an amp to test putting 1KW on 20M with no interaction, except for
the direct harmonic, on 15M or 10M in any combination. This was
particularly useful on Sunday in ARRL SS CW when pickings are slim. When
transmitting on 40M, I can hear hash on 20M plus or minus the second
harmonic, but signals are still copyable. I just CQ high on 40M (7030 or
higher) and tune below 14060.

Anyway, Elecraft has moved me up a level in the competition or at least help
me stay even with the newer technology flooding the market. Being able to
ignore high power stations planting themselves within 200 Hz or less of my
CQ frequency really makes the stress much lower over the 30 hours when you
are dead tired. In the low power category (150W), I managed 1025 QSOs in
all 80 sections (if the North Dakota wasn't a pirate) in a rough year for
SS. The K2s performed great. I did find an intermittent power fluctuation
that I'll need to fix before SSB weekend. Oh well, gotta have something to
play with, right?

CUL,

Bob K5WA
