[Elecraft] K3: ATU but a bigger version
I really like the way that the K3 ATU works. It has that nice "push my button and I will tune for you" feel to it. But, it is so small. OK, kind of kidding here but it would be nice to have a big legal limit version of this tuner. Sure, a separate "bigger" box container. I don't really like some of the auto-tuners that I have seen that are in automatic mode and retune behind the scenes (so to say). I like to have some control over my auto-tuner. So, is there any hope that Elecraft might someday build a big 1500 watt capable ATU along the same style as the ATU in the K3? Knowing Elecraft, it would be highly configurable with firmware controlled features and options. Phil, I have privately requested the same as you suggest. Since there is already a full market of amps... would love to have the auto tuner to work with my THP HL-2.5. The THP auto tuner doesn't quite have what I would like. Even better, I would like a totally remote Elecraft tuner which works at/near the antennas. There are a couple out there, but the cost is amazing for the complicated wiring to them. Would be nice to be fully remote. I understand that the announced 2K-FA amplifier from SPE will have the option for remote ATU and antenna switch. Oh yes! I find the K3 ATU just amazing and have often thought how terrific it would be to yank it out of the box and put it outside - and - how REALLY nice it would be to have it scaled up to handle at least 600 watts or even the legal limit - and - work seamlessly with the K3 - and - perhaps a KPA800/1500 (not to start up the "we want our amplifiers" thread - again!). - Actually, I'd settle for a KPA500 but that's another story! Hi, in fact there is no suitable remote legal power limit ATU on the market provides all required functions and capabilities. I am looking for it for long years. Petr, Even though I am the one who started this thread with my question, I need to find out your opinion about the new Palstar Auto Tuner. It is pretty good from what I read and if you read the reviews they are mostly very good. Apparently there had been a few new product type quirks that were overcome by new firmware updates. Dean, thank You very much for Your nice tip. Unfortunately this unit is able to handle 600W key down and mainly the most important antenna's switch is not presented at all. So if will decide for an investment into the remote controlled ATU then definitely I need to serve more than single antenna. I've been using a MFJ-998 with my K3/ALS-600 for almost two years now. Works great. I also used it with an ALS-1300 that I had here for about two months, and the MFJ-998 easily handled the higher power of the ALS-1300. The MFJ-998 is primarily used with my 43-foot vertical on all bands. I do have base matching on 160/80 meters, but just the unun interface on 40-10 meters.
