Re: [Elecraft] K3 + Palstar AT-AUTO + SteppIR Vertical + MicroKeyer 2

2009-12-23 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

As documented in the microHAM microKEYER II manual, there
are TWO auxiliary data outputs available from microKEYER II.

The first output is the CI-V jack (3.5 mm). MK II can be
configured to provide an Icom compatible "transceive" data
broadcast with selectable data rate (1200 - 19200 bps) and
CI-V address. Frequency data can be selected from "trasmit
frequency," "receive frequency," "operating frequency,"
(shifts between TX/RX), VFO A, VFO B or "Sub RX frequency."

The second output is a TTL serial port the iLINK port (pin
functions are documented in Appendix A of the manual).
The "iLINK" port can be configured to output control data
(transmit frequency to prevent "hunting" when operating
split) for the SteppIR (original controller) in SteppIR's
native mode. Use of SteppIR's native command set inhibits
transmit when the SteppIR elements are moving. This port
can be used with a TTL to RS-232 converter (or the microHAM
iL/ST cable) to connect to the DATA OUT port of the SteppIR
controller.

It is trivial to use the iLINK port to control the SteppIR
via the SteppIR Data Out port and the CI-V port to control
the AT-Auto (configured for an Icom transceiver).

I have a SteppIR yagi, and I ordered the 02114 cable from SteppIR to use
with the K3. The ICOM cable won't work. I don't use it, but I'd guess
you would go from the data out jack to any other device you wanted to
control.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 + Palstar AT-AUTO + SteppIR Vertical + MicroKeyer 2

2009-12-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tim,

The K3 with the SteppIR and MicroKeyer 2 will cause no problems - the
SteppIR does not transmit anything on the RS-232 bus, it simply
listens. The MicroHam connects to the StepIR and the K3 connects from
the SteppIR pass-thru to the K3.
I am not familiar with the Palstar AT-AUTO, so I can't comment, but
since you said the manual referred to 'handshaking', that may be an
indication of difficulty, OTOH the K3 is not an Icom either, so it may
be possible that it will work with the K3 in a similar manner as the
SteppIR.

[Elecraft] K3 + Palstar AT-AUTO + SteppIR Vertical + MicroKeyer 2

2009-12-23 Thread w8jj

My objective is to use all of this equipment simultaneously providing there
is a way for all devices to receive the necessary data needed for operation.
I'm interested in having the SteppIR vertical and a wire antenna fed with
450 Ohm ladder line available at all times on the same or different bands.
Is it conceivable for the vertical and the AT-AUTO to pick up frequency/band
data independently from each RX (main and sub)? I'm also concerned about
data port availability as the MK-2 connects to the K-3's RS 232 and ACC
ports. How will the other devices get data? The SteppIR box has a "data out"
port that my prove useful in this scenario.

My K-3 was ordered on Monday (replacing Icom 756 PRO III) and I have the
rest of the equipment listed above in place. I'm trying to work through the
theory of operation with a K-3 in the mix. One major difference is that the
Palstar is set up to "handshake" with Icom radios using the external tuner
port on the radio. The K-3 will require a different approach, however. If
you're using a similar configuration, I'd love to hear from you.

Any thoughts/suggestions?
