Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY message

2022-04-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
That message means that for some reason or another. the K3 is detecting
a key closure on power up.
Check your key and the contact spacing first, and then proceed to
anything that may be causing  that message.

Don't overlook a stuck PTT switch, which can cause the same message.

If all else fails, unplug the key and the microphone - it should come up
without the message - then plug them in one at a time, power up and see
which is causing the

ERR message.

If you are using a straight key with a mono plug. change it to a stereo
plug and use the KEY jack on the K3 rather than the paddles jack.

The only way to clear the error is to get the logging program to stop doing
whatever misbehavior is going on. I had this happen while I was playing
with the configuration settings in N1MM while the radio was on. I had to
terminate N1MM and turn off the radio. I never did figure out what caused
it but I did make it go away.

Most likely it is your logging control program that is already asserting a
PTT signal when you turn on the radio. Check your PTT settings, RTS, DTR .
Make sure you boot the logging software after you have the radio on.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY/PTT Problem

2010-03-20 Thread Don Wilhelm
Andy,

It may be that you have a glitch in the firmware - yes, ERR PTT or ERR
KEY should only appear at power on time (although you might want to
check to be certain your power supply is not glitching off).

I would suggest you try a firmware download - use K3 Utility, download
the latest release firmware and attempt to load it. Be certain you are
in Advanced Mode and check all the boxes to force not only the MCU, but
the FPF and DSP firmware to load as well.
If the firmware load from K3 Utility is not successful, try the steps to
Force a Firmware Download - see the K3 Utility help file or in the K3
manual.

I won't guarantee the firmware load will fix your problem, but it is
easy to do and has some chance of fixing it.

If you have an attached computer and have set things so the RS232 port
can assert PTT (CONFIG:PTT-KEY), it may be that when you power up the K3
the computer RTS or DSR line(s) are in a state to be interpreted as an
assertion of PTT.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY - Continuous Keying

2009-04-09 Thread Gill W4RYW

See if you can isolate the problem - Turn off the K3 & disconnect the computer
from the K3, turn it on and check the config menu setting for PTT-KEY. Turn
both PTT and KEY to OFF. Turn off the VOX. Turn off the K3 and reconnect the
computer. Turn on K3 then start up computer. You should be ok. If not call
Aptos. otherwise go to PTT-KEY menu and turn back on whatever was originally
on. If the problem re-appears, then your computer is asserting either the RTS
or DTR line continually and now you have to trouble shoot the computer - likely
some program or program update is screwed up. All this is assuming that sound
card is clean and not activating VOX. If you turn on VOX and it keys again,
then you still have a computer soundcard issue.

Good Luck

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY - Continuous Keying

2009-04-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bud,

If the K3 is powered on with a KEY(or paddles) or PTT closure, ERR KEY
will result, and will not transmit until the condition is cleared. (but
connect a dummy load just in case).

I am not certain the LINE IN has anything to do with it, but if VOX is
on, the K3 can be keyed with the LINE IN signal. Has your computer
developed a noisy sound card? Connect amplified speakers to the
computer line out to see what it sounds like. Is there hum pickup on
your cable to the K3 LINE IN?

Have you connected the computer enclosure and the K3 together with a
good grounding conductor? If not, try it and see if that helps.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY - Continuous Keying

2009-04-09 Thread Paul Fletcher

My K3 display shows ERR KEY when I turn it on.

Try disconnecting all cables from the K3 except the antenna and power
(obviously!) and see if the symptoms persist. If they don't, plug in one cable
at a time until the problem returns and go from there. Alternatively it could
be a problem with the I/O daughter board. If you still have the problem with
all cables disconnected remove the daughter board that has the RS232 and
accessory connectors on (the K3 will operate fine without it) and see if that
fixes the problem. If it does clean the daughter board thoroughly with
something that removes water soluble flux and a tooth brush, let it dry and
reinstall it and see if that fixes the problem. If the problem reappears you
could try again or get the board replaced.

If removing the board doesn't fix the problem I'd suggest contacting Elecraft
tech support.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY - Continuous Keying

2009-04-09 Thread W0FK

Did you check your CW key and/or paddle? I have had that issue when the plug
was slightly askew or if it was making contact. The error code indicates a
closed connection somewhere. Also check the cables to your amplifier (if you
ahve one in line).

Lou, W0FK

My K3 display shows ERR KEY when I turn it on. It's been working flawlessly
until now and no recent changes have been
made.

1.No programs are running on the computer. ERR Key is displayed on the K3
2.If I shut down the computer the ERR Key turns off partway thru the
"Windows is Shutting Down" screen.
3.If I turn on the computer with the K3 on, it keys the transmitter a few
times then it keys on continuously after
windows comes up.
4.I disconnected both the RS232 and ACCY cables from the K3 but
surprisingly the K3 remained keyed with the same
symptoms.

5.I disconnected the Line Out cable from the K3 and it unkeyed. However, it
would periodically/intermittently key
for about half a second on its own.
6.I reconnected the Line Out and the K3 again keyed continuously.
7.I disconnected the Line In cable from the K3 and the K3 unkeyed. However,
it would periodically key for about half
a second on its own.
8.I checked both Line In and line Out cables for continuity or shorts. Both
are OK.
9.I checked the sound card for functionality using a second radio. It works
properly for both Line In and Line Out.
10. Both Line In and Line Out cables are stereo cables.
11. If the K3 is on when windows starts up it goes into key down mode. If I
start windows with the K3 off and then turn
the K3 on the K3 displays the ERR Key diagnostic.

I don't understand what Line Out or Line In has to do with keying the
transmitter.

Any suggestions on what happened and how to fix it? Until now all has been
perfect.

[Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY - Continuous Keying

2009-04-09 Thread Bud Governale, W3LL

Both

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY

2009-02-05 Thread Brett Howard
Thats not how its worked for me... I've powered things up and tapped
the key too early in the power up sequence and gotten that. But I just
either wait or press the power button and cycle power and all is good.

[Elecraft] K3 ERR KEY

2009-02-05 Thread Brian Alsop
While fooling around with a station configuration change, I managed to
trigger this.

It's a great idea.

However, once triggered, you can't turn off the K3 with its power switch.
You have to go back and turn off the power supply.
Is this how it was intended to work?

[Elecraft] K3 -ERR KEY

2008-10-24 Thread Patrick DalPorto
I get the ERR KEY error message with all other items unplugged from the K3 and
a plug in the paddle receptacle that is not wired to anything.
All works well with computer and straight key connected. I must have a problem
with the paddle receptacle that occurred spontaneously.
Any ideas from anyone before I take the K3 apart?

[Elecraft] K3 - ERR KEY

2008-10-23 Thread Patrick DalPorto
I had my paddle plugged into the back of the K3 as it had been for months. I
turned the rig on and got the message ERR KEY and I was unable to turn off the
K3 with the power switch. The rig is okay if the paddle is not plugged in. I
get the same error if I plug in a unwired plug into the paddle receptacle. The
rig keys fine from the KEY receptacle. I seem to remember a post about this
earlier but I am unable to find it. Software MCU 2.46/DSP 1.92.

[Elecraft] K3: ERR KEY - Neat

2008-09-24 Thread Neal

Disconcerting when I first ran into it but a nice feature.

Powered up the K3 the other morning and "ERR KEY" popped up. Couldn't find
it
in "my" manual. A little playing around revealed a straight key problem
(closure).

Checking the latest manual version online I found the error message
documented.

After loading the latest firware, I normally print out the latest menu
listings, but
I never thought about the error messages.
