Re: [Elecraft] K3 Future Factory Hardware Updates; + New beta f/w release 3.27
I just ordered the K3 VFO TUNING NOISE REDUCTION and I'll do the AUTOMATIC FRONT END PROTECTION (1 wire mod) when I get into the radio. I can't find anything on the 3rd mod mentioned in Eric's announcement on August 25th, IF OUTPUT BUFFER GAIN MOD (For the P3, LP-PAN etc). Is there a modification sheet for it somewhere on the site? I will be ordering a P3 down the line and I may as well do other mod now. Eric, The low freq response is still there in 3.27 / 2.24. The way I check this is the response of the RX EQ. There's a good response if I change the EQ setting on 100Hz and 200Hz. Love it. 73 Arie PA3A --- It will reappear in a future release. SPICE modeling showed that the higher current was necessary to maintain the same maximum signal handling, but I don't remember doing IMD before/after measurements to verify that. Obviously, Elecraft feel that the device can handle the extra signal without increasing current. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Future Factory Hardware Updates; + New beta f/w release 3.27
Bob, Well said - This is the first time I have felt the NR works satisfactorily on SSB. It actually makes SSB signals appear out of nothingness as one tunes the band. In my tests, I felt that for SSB operation the F1-x and F2-x settings worked best and allowed a weak signal to be picked out of the noise. For me, the F3-x and F4-x settings seemed not to help SSB stations that were down near the noise, but the lighter settings worked great on weak signals. Yes, there is a bit of 'hollowness' to SSB voices, and the effect is magnified with AFX on, but that is not a problem in my opinion. I am running with RX EQ flat. 73, Don W3FPR Bob Garrett wrote: > In my not so humble opinion, version 3.27 works extremely well for both CW > and SSB. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Future Factory Hardware Updates; + New beta f/w release 3.27
I'd felt that the SSB NR was a bit lacking in this latest version but found that the echo was very difficult to copy through and when listening to stronger stations however like I said I didn't get a change to spend a lot of time behind it... I just made a contact to Tasmania (he barely heard me but it worked). Anyway I found that using AFX in conjunction with the NR makes the echo quite pronounced. Also when I was testing it before I was testing with a somewhat stronger station and that seemed almost like it was clipping and muffling the station. But when employing the feature with weaker stations it seems to do a bit better job. I'm not so sure I'd try it on the really weak ones. But cranking things down to about 1.6Khz wide with an FC around 1.05 or soish (depending on the op's voice) does a good job of cleaning up some noise... But it sure seems to work a trick in the really aggressive settings for the weak CW stations. Just like any tool it has its places where it does a very good job and it has its places where you're better off without it. I'm still very happy with it as of yet in CW and greatly appreciate all of the hard work that is going into this feature! Glad to know I'm not the only one that never sleeps.. ;) ~Brett On Tue, Aug 25, 2009 at 6:00 PM, Brett Howard wrote: > I've not had a chance to spend a lot of time with the new firmware but > here are my initial impressions. > > The NR seems to be really great in CW (but I liked it a lot in 3.25 as > well). Re: [Elecraft] K3 Future Factory Hardware Updates; + New beta f/w release 3.27
I've not had a chance to spend a lot of time with the new firmware but here are my initial impressions. The NR seems to be really great in CW (but I liked it a lot in 3.25 as well). It seems to fade into the new settings a bit quicker and not need to be turned off and back on again. Although I find myself being impatient and still doing that at times. I did however go up and try it out on some SSB stuff and it seems to really round out and muffle some of the SSB stuff. I found the signals easier to copy with the NR off than on. However the NR in CW is quite impressive at pulling out some of the weak ones. Its not doing such a good job that I'd not be able to make copy with out it but for me who is a bit green on copying its nice to be able to take many signals and make them sound near perfect. One detriment is that when setting the radio to PB CTRL = 0.1 before it seemed like there was a lot more low frequency response and that the bottom two bands in the EQ finally did something for a change. Is there something that one can do to get that audio back? Testing the auto notch in a labratory type environment I inject an S9 signal and then notch it I get 43dB of attenuation. Inject a 1uV signal and I get 10dB of attenuation. Both make the signal generator sound as if its been turned off. ~Brett On Tue, Aug 25, 2009 at 10:52 AM, Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft wrote: > Hi Roy, > > As of today, we have made the following enhancements to all K3s leaving > the factory: > > K3 VFO TUNING NOISE REDUCTION (requires f/w 3.25 or later) > K3 AUTOMATIC FRONT END PROTECTION (1 wire mod) > K3 IF OUTPUT BUFFER GAIN MOD (For the P3, LP-PAN etc) (1 resistor value > change) > > Based on feedback form those that have tried the preliminary release of > these changes, we are comfortable with adding them as standard K3 features. > > Please note that the last item, the IF Output Buffer Gain mMod, is > slightly different than the similar N8LP mod some have been performing > on their K3s independently. Joe, Are you making an assumption that the P3 input impedance is 50 ohms? That may or may not be true. I don't know the design parameters of the P3, but it certainly occurs to me that it is not necessary to use a 50 ohm input impedance. Yes, SDR-IQ and LP-PAN have the 50 ohm input, so connecting those devices to the K3 IF Out would cause loss. 73, Don W3FPR Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: > >> A 50-ohm match is not required in any case. >> > > That’s not exactly true. > A 50-ohm match is not required in any case. Thats not exactly true. With devices like LP-Pan or SDR-IQ that have 50 Ohm inputs connected to what is a high impedance output, the transfer loss (antenna to IF) was still in the range of -6dB even with the N8LP modification. The rest of the solution was to use a Clifton Labs Z-1 buffer amplifier (high impedance input) in a unity gain configuration, install a 4:1 or 9:1 (step down) transformer, or modify the SDR-IQ for a 200 Ohm input. 73, ... Eric, There were two questions. I am most interested in the answer to the second question, repeated here below. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Future Factory Hardware Updates; + New beta f/w release 3.27
The resistor change increases the IF output signal by a little over 10 dB. It's interesting to note that changing the FET source resistor does not result in a 50-ohm output impedance because the resistor is in parallel with the FET source resistance. A 50-ohm match is not required in any case.
