[Elecraft] K3 new GAIN knobs

2009-10-28 Thread KM5Q
Improved knobs are available now. After second time having knobs
break, I told factory I would keep my glued-together knobs until they
had improved ones available. New ones arrived a few weeks ago with a
note saying they are now made of a fiber-reinforced plastic that is
much stronger. (Although they look the same.)

Mine are fine so far and I trust they will stay with the radio until
it gains antique value.

WAS: Re: [Elecraft] K3 potentiometer dead spots?
FWIW I've just had another failure of the little AF knob. All four
nested knobs were replaced already about 3 months ago due to the
originals cracking, but one of the new ones has also now cracked and
lost a chunk off the end. I think I saw a rumor here that new
stronger knobs (with metal collets?) were being ordered - does anyone
know if they are available yet, please?

I didn't realize this was a wide spread problem. I received my new knob set
last Friday.

My kit came with the new knobs. They don't seem to go onto the shaft
very far. So far no breakage, but two different ones have come of while
I was turning them.

Maybe just tighten them a bit more? Best way to get them really deep
on the shaft is to hit 'em with a hammer :-) (Please don't do that.
Sometimes I feel like you can't make any comment on a reflector
without an appropriate disclaimer)

Shoot, I haven't any trouble with my original concentric knobs
(shipped on ser 2091). I didn't pull a hamstring tightening them
down, and they don't fall off either :-)

2009-10-28 Thread Eric Swartz -WA6HHQ, Elecraft
This sounds like he is not talking about the concentric knobs on the
AF/RF gain pots (which have a set screw).

It sounds like the push on knobs used for the four mechanical encoders
just to the left of the VFO knob. Those push on knobs fit very snugly
and he may not be pushing them on all the way.

2009-10-28 Thread Mike
Sorry, but I have to meet my reading tutor now. I misread the thread. I
blame it on that speed reading course I never took. :-[

I'm referring to the 4 knob set [shift, width, speed, cmp].

Re: [Elecraft] K3 new GAIN knobs

2009-10-28 Thread Mike
100% correct Eric. I've pushed pretty hard. I don't want to push the
shaft thru the encoder...
As close as I can measure, they're off the front panel 3/32. That on
all the way?
