Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power Creep

2010-04-21 Thread Dan Atchison
Guy, K2AV contacted me direct and suggested I rerun the power
calibration, something I had not done after loading the latest
firmware. The power creep has been significantly reduced to the point
of acceptability (2 to 4 watts vs 15 - 20 watts). Thanks, Guy, and
shame on me for not trying that before I spoke.

Dan

[Elecraft] K3 Power Creep

2010-04-21 Thread Dan Atchison
I've seen this posted before, but just noticed it tonight, the first
time I've operated the rig on the air since I fixed an intermittent
last Saturday. I also just installed version 3.94. The posts I've seen
before talked about SSB, but . . . .

If I adjust the power control to the power I wish to transmit, when I
first transmit the power starts out low but finally creeps up to the
correct power output. If I watch the power meter (LP-100A), and even
the power meter on the rig, if I have changed the power control going
from say 15 watts to 100 watts, the first dits or dahs are at varying
but constantly increasing power increments until it reaches its final
resting place. It only takes a couple of seconds, if that. Once
there, it stays put. Obviously better than a high initial power
spike, but nonetheless it shouldn't be.

Anyone else see this or am I the unfortunate one with this small issue?

Dan -- N3ND

Same here.

Its only on AFSK-A, not on FSK D.

Hi Ron,

I can't comment on whether this is normal or a problem, but I can
confirm that I see the same thing in AFSK-A mode, so it's not just
you :-) I believe it is ALC related.

[Elecraft] K3 power creep

2009-02-15 Thread Ron W3ZV
My normal RTTY contest mode is S&P. I am using AFSK A mode. When I am
doing this with my K3 and FL-7000, I set my drive so I get about 300
watts out of the amp. On the rare occasion that I try to hold a
frequency long enough to run on it, I back off the power so that the amp
runs 250 watts. Not much difference, but I feel better about it. I
noticed during the CQ WPX that after each power change, the amp output
is lower than expected and creeps up during the first transmission. All
subsequent transmissions are where I want them and steady. Typically
when changing from 300 watts to 250, I would see 180 out on first
transmission, which would creep toward 250 during the transmission. This
is what show on my amp PO meter, so it is somewhat less than a precision
measurement.

I had been using FSK in the past ( and will again shortly) and don't
remember seeing this before. However, like my amp's PO meter, my memory
is not a precision instrument.

Is this normal, perhaps ALC related, or a problem.
