Re: [Elecraft] K3 rig control/CW serial interface

2012-12-02 Thread david Moes
I use serial cable only as well using RTS DTR for keying from N1mm and
logger 32. originally I had some issues with some messed up keying
using the USB- serial adapter. I discovered that the Mother board did
have RS232 it just wasn't on the back of the computer. I just needed
an adapter cable that had DB9 at one end and a molex connecter that
attache to Motherboard. this solved the issue I am guessing it was
some latencies in the USB adapter.

Talking to the guy at the computer store he told me that most new
motherboards still have a serial bus but rather than a DB9 port on the
back just have 9 pin connectors on the board so you need the extra
cable. it just fits into one of the unused expansion slot openings and
has a ribbon cable from the DB9 that goes to the connector on the
MoBo. works fine for meI don't run it more than 30WPM but that's
just because faster is way beyond my own abilities.

I think K1NU used to make these for Yaesu radios, but I'm not sure they are
available any more.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 rig control/CW serial interface

2012-12-01 Thread Dick Dievendorff
I use N1MM this way with one standard serial cable for single-port rig
control and PTT/CW keying, using a USB to Serial adapter manufactured by
Gearmo that uses an FTDI chip set.

I use just one of the four ports for the K3, the others are attached to
other devices.

p/B004ETDC8K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354397714>

My N1MM "configure" dialog shows COM2: Elecraft K3 and I've checked
"CW/Other Details". When I click "Set" I get a page with COM2 as its
caption. In that dialog I set speed 38400 No parity, 1 stop bit, and choose
"CW" for the DTR (pin 4) and "PTT" for RTS (pin 7). Then I set my K3
configuration menu PTT-KEY for "RTS-DTR".

In years past I would sometimes experience stuttering from CW keying near
the end of a contest about the time I entered each QSO and went to WinKey as
a result. In recent years I haven't found CW keying from a serial port,
even with this USB adapter, to be a problem.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit and a reasonably modern (last couple of years)
Intel chipset.

Will,

Sure. It's called a regular DE9 straight-through serial extension
cable. You probably already have one. The pins in the K3 RS232 port
that would normally be connected to the PC's RTS and DTR outputs can
be used for PTT and CW keying. Search the K3 owner's manual for
"ptt-key".
