Re: [Elecraft] K4 and Delivery Delays

2022-04-02 Thread Wes
I once owned a KWM-1.  I bought it "surplus" from a company that was selling
aircraft parts cannibalized from Air Force planes being cut up at DMAFB's "Bone
Yard."  I believe it was out of an RB-47.

RB-47s were overflying the USSR, with aircrews being lost, long before Gary
Powers was shot down in his US.  I have an inscribed copy of "We See All" by Lt
Col. Bruce Bailey, who was one of those guys.  He later piloted SR-71s and had
many stories to tell.

The last I knew of the radio, it was in the Collins collection of Don, W7DD.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 and Delivery Delays

2022-03-30 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
The space division of Rockwell went to Boeing. The radio / avionics division is
still alive and well in Cedar Rapids. There was another group - semiconductor.
I believe that has been shrunk and just does internal chips now. When I was at
Sun Micro 20 years ago we saw a very interesting Java processor from Rockwell
that never saw the external world. Too bad, it would have been an excellent
solution for many problems.

Now, also discussed in this thread was Flex. Their major market is military,
which has given them a huge advantage in getting chips and materials over the
last couple of years. The auto industry was jealous…

The '380 was still being advertised in QST in '82 at least, maybe '83.
The Drake TR-7 was its contemporary as I recall. Heathkit entered the
fray with the SS-9000. Kenwood's TS-930 was probably the leader in
sales and it seems more likely to work someone with a '930 than any of
the other three these days.

I even drove down to their hamfest to look at the working ORION,,,

That receiver by Doug Smith was , I DO BELIEVE, very close in

It was a no-brainer for me to choose Elecraft as my equipment maker of
choice when I entered the hobby.
Took a long time and some bit of sacrifice to do so, but I finally got
my K3s, et al. FULLY optioned right before the parts started getting scarce.

Correct, they're both "R" companies and at my age, that's enough to
confuse them. 😉  I still don't know what precipitated the demise of
Ten-Tec but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a pandemic.

And I believe that each one of us that is on the list knows that. I believe
our philosophy is we know there's at least a dozen OK radios out there, but
we all picked Elecraft even though at this time due the shortages, there's
a long wait. But we loyal and we know Elecraft is ahead of the game. Those
that want to whine about Elecraft shipping times other radios, we politely
asked to go somewhere else. Elecraft is not a "off the shelf radio .. with
it you receive 2 Ceo's, and backing of a staff that watched and improves
the radio each day. Both Flex and Elecraft have issues ... But if you are
getting a TOL radio, you did your research, and made the call... This is my
last post ... I have taken too much space on a subject that I thought was
dead as all it does is rile up people.

I'm not sure how big a company Flex is, but Elecraft is a small one doing a
great design and development and putting out some amazing products, while
having limited resources. A fair comparison might be against a company in a
similar position. Again, not saying Flex isn't (I don't know). Certainly
not the big three.

[Elecraft] K4 and Delivery Delays

2022-03-29 Thread Bill Cotter
I thought long and hard about a K4, but couldn't stand the idea of
a two year wait for whatever reasons given. If design decisions and
supply chain choices cause you to lose customers, it says that
Elecraft needs to have a long moment to get their house in order.
Or, they will fall into line with TenTec, Collins and many other
American companies that have folded tent.

We all went through the pandemic, and worked around it. So, I
ordered a Flex 6600M and it was delivered in 8-days. No two year
wait. They have something figured out. I was also assured the PGXL
1500W amplifier ships in the same time frame.

Go figure.

Bill N4LG

You may have missed the two-year long pandemic that, among other
things, has sickened multiple Elecraft employees, caused many to
work from home, and disrupted supply chains, to the extent that
nearly all the major carmakers can't get chips to put cars on
dealers lots. Elecraft is a small company, and they're swimming in
the same ocean as the rest of us. They're 20 miles down the road
from me, and I know several of their employees, as well as the two
owners.
