RE: [Elecraft] KX1 power mod?

2007-02-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Wait until you have the KXB3080 option installed and tested. Then check
with a 12 volt power supply to see if you have 3 watts output on all bands.
If less than 3 watts, install the power mod.

Do not install the power mod if you have at least 3 watts output on all
bands, it may overstress the output components by attempting to increase the
power output.

Hello all. I received KX1 SN 1721 several days ago. As of this
evening, I have successfully completed Part 1 - both assembly and
testing! I'm having a lot of fun with it, and looking forward to
many fruitful hours of operation. Anyway, my question: I am
building the 80/30 module to install from the beginning. Should
I make the power mod now (it would be a whole lot easier than
doing it later), or am I better off leaving it as is until it is
completed so I can confirm low power out?

Thanks for the help...I love reading the advice on this reflector!

[Elecraft] KX1 Power Mod

2006-11-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
Folks,

Up until today I had beilived that the KX1 power mod was needed for the
KBX3080 install and desirable for others.

NOT SO! I now have Wayne's input on the subject, and find that it is to be
used ONLY if your KX1 actually does have low power output.

If you can develop at least 3 watts on all bands with a 12 volt power
supply, do not install the power mod. (the spec is 3-4 watts with a 12 volt
supply - so if you get 3 watts or more that is all you should expect).

Running the KX1 at incresed power output stresses the components
unnecessarily. Over 4 watts is not a good thing.

I realize that hams try to squeeze every extra microwatt out of the
transmtter, but ask yourself if it is worth the increased probability for
failure of your KX1.

RE: [Elecraft] KX1 power mod

2006-11-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
Joe,

The 'KX1 power mod' is available from Elecraft as PN E850230. I could not
find it on the website, and I really don't know why.

The change is quite easy - just 2 resistors to change. R30 increases to 33
ohms (from 22) and R11 is decreased to 4.7 ohms (from 10). If you have the
1/4 watt resistors, you can make the change. Someone who had excess offered
them on the reflector a day or two ago.

The change is needed for the KXB3080 installation, and has been shipped with
that option, but it can be installed on any KX1, even though it is not
required.

Do not exceed 4 watts for any significant length of time with your KX1, and
keep a watch on the temperature above the tuning knob if you are operating
at higher power levels.

[Elecraft] KX1 Power Mod

2006-11-08 Thread gehringc
Sorry Joe I meant to send this to the reflector

There is no direct link to the Mods Page that I could find, however;

For the benefit of the Elecraft Reflector Archive and any others that are
looking for the KX1 Power Mod; you can find it by going to the Builders
Resources page, on the top of the Builder's Resources page you will find a link
to the Spare Parts and Mod Kits page, go to the Spare Parts and Mod's page
and
all the way on the bottom is the PDF file that describes the KX1 Power
Modification.
The link is
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/E740099%20KX1%20Application%20Note%20Rev%20B.pdf/

Sorry but I had problems getting TinyURL to work

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 power mod

2006-11-08 Thread Ed - K9EW

Here's the link to the KX1 Power Mod on the Elecraft website. I
searched for it also and couldn't find it. So I tried a Google
search, and there it was - very well hidden. Don't know why it isn't
easier to find along with the other Elecraft mods.
