[Elecraft] KX3 encoder
Could someone help me who is the manufacturer of the encoder? Elecraft shipping cost is extremely high, same value and size shipping cost is about 20 USD from CA, Elecraft ships it for about 60 USD. [Elecraft] KX3 Encoder Noise
Got the new KX3 finally. Took about 4 hours to put it together and calibrate the radio. Impressive. With small laptop power supply able to get 10 watts easily. I experience the encoder hash for the first time yesterday. I had a rather long QSO with local ham and after signing I noticed the scratchy hash noise with tuning the VFO A. The heat sink warmed up a bit after the SSB QSO but not too bad. I tried the radio on several bands and the encoder noise was present. I turned off the rig. Later that day I remembered turning AFX MD to the off position. I went back to the rig and turned it on. The Encoder noise was still present. I truned AFX MD back to the Delay setting and the encoder noise disappeared. I wonder if others have noticed this. Sounds to me like this is a software issue and should be able to be remedied by firmware update. Overall very impressive rig. It sounds like it will be my rig to take to Hawaii in February with the small vertical antenna, all easily carried in the suitcase. Thanks again, Wayne and Eric and the Elecraft team for another great product. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 encoder noise
I have the KX3 #1877. It came with AFX MOD already set to delay. I still have VFO A tuning noise beginning at 20M. Sometimes low on 20. Sometimes moderate. But, as you move up the bands, it gets progressively worse. This tops my very short list of "things I'd like changed". I really hope it's a software fix. Thanks for an awesome radio. My first contact was on 40 using a horrible antenna the day I got it. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder
István, The optical encoder used for VFO A on the KX3 was custom designed for Elecraft, and may not be generally available. Prior to this, there was no optical encoder available from any manufacturer that was this small, while still having excellent mechanical properties and long life. Even if you could find it, you'd be paying single-unit prices, probably higher than what we charge, because we purchase them in large quantities. In addition, there's a small circuit board pre-attached to the circuit board to allow it to be plugged into the control panel board. You may be able to have the encoder shipped from one of our EU dealers. 73, Wayne N6KR On May 23, 2016, at 2:22 PM, Szabó István wrote: > Could someone help me who is the manufacturer of the encoder? [Elecraft] KX3 encoder dying?
I noticed today that when I tried to fine adjust the mic level with the mic/keyer/pwr encoder that it may display the mic level but won't change it or if it does it's very erratic. The response is the same with the keyer speed in CW mode and when attempting to adjust the power level. Turning the knob fast usually does nothing, turning it slow may move it a bit and wiggling the knob seems the best way to see results. I never had a problem with it till today and I have made no changes to it or it's operation. I have been running it on WSPR at 500mw with a 2 minute Tx and 8 minute Rx for a few weeks now and always tweak the mic gain for the blinking ALC 5th bar when I change bands. I'm assuming it's the encoder going bad and will have to be sent to the Elecraft Hospital for a part replacement surgery but I thought I'd check here first in case I'm missing something. tnx de George WD0AKZ --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KX3 encoder: mechanical noise?
My KX3 encoder makes a mechanical scraping sound when I turn the tuning knob. This happens with and without the knob attached. I also have this 'scrapping' noise - very light and does not happen at the same spot every turn. Are there bearings in encoder - maybe a ball or roller with a flat spot on it that drags when the flat spot comes around? Or a bearing separator that is bent somehow? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder noise
Mike, I picked up on your "horrible antenna" words. Yes, with no antenna, or a "horrible antenna", you may hear some VFO tuning noise in the KX3, but that is usually covered up by band noise with a normal antenna connected (except on 6 meters and maybe 10 meters where the band noise is low). You can use the menu VFO NR on bands where the tuning noise is a problem. This is a locked menu entry and it is a per band setting. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/30/2012 3:46 AM, Mike Mardis wrote: > I have the KX3 #1877. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder dying?
Encoders can be cleaned. I've done it in several radios, several brands. It is usually necessary to open the radio, remove the encoder. Then carefully open the encoder, clean the wiper contacts and the stationary contacts with contact cleaner. These are simply a stepping switch. Only one moving part. Reassemble in the reverse process. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder dying?
I opted to get a RSA number from Elecraft and ship it out to them. I no longer have my workbench (or keen eyesight/steady soldering hand for that matter) so I really don't want taking a chance to do that type of work on something as expensive as the KX3. I told them to replace all 4 of the small encorders and I should be good-to-go for many more years. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Encoder Upgrade
I don't think so -- you get an allen key with the KX3 itself (both factory and kit versions), as this is needed to adjust the drag on the tuning knob. If you have lost your key, when you order the encoder upgrade, in the comments field ask them to add an allen key to your order (mail parts at electraft.com to get the part number). 73, Matt VK2RQ. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder: mechanical noise?
The KX3's encoder has a high-quality, lubricated sleeve bearing. These are used in some radios targeted at mobile operation, like the TS-480. It seemed like a reasonable choice for the KX3, which will often be jostled around during field or mobile use. And it fits :) Wayne N6KR On Jul 19, 2012, at 11:04 AM, Andrew Moore wrote: > No bearings on this encoder (I think it's been asked before). Just the > nature of this encoder, it sounds like. Dunno if it was the same cause, but I, too, had a scraping noise when turning the VFO knob. It didn't happen on every turn and it "moved" around the circumference, so it didn't seem to be the knob bottoming out on the clear plastic bezel. But it was. I removed the rubber ring around the knob, loosened the set screw and lifted the knob ever so slightly above the bezel, tightened the nut and the noise was gone. /Rick N6XI On Thu, Jul 19, 2012 at 10:43 AM, Sullivan, Mike C wrote: > I also have this 'scrapping' noise - very light and does not happen at the > same spot every turn. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder: mechanical noise?
Robert, There should be virtually no electrical drift. It's likely to be either mechanical or firmware. First try locking the VFO (hold KHZ for 3 seconds). Does it still drift? If so, then firmware could be causing the drift, typically because MIC BTN is set to PTT.UP.DN but the mic is something other than an MH3. If you're using an MH3 and still see firmware-based drift, there could be problem with one of the resistors in the mic or on the control panel board. If there's no drift when the VFO is locked, then the cause must be mechanical, and you should be able to eliminate it by having the knob lightly compress the felt pad. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder: mechanical noise?
Newbie here with KX3-K #3049. My encoder shaft had 2 very tight spots as I turned the shaft - even without the knob attached. I hoped it would go away but after a week of use it was still very tight. I removed encoder and could see the C-clip and the washer underneath rotating on the threaded shaft. I applied a drop of 3-in-1 oil to washer & clip and worked it in well: turning shaft while pushing it in and pulling out, more oil - repeat. Reinstalled encoder and knob. It now turns smoothly and is 95% better. 73 Dennis K4THE -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX3-encoder-mechanical-noise-tp7559447p7568186.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 encoder: mechanical noise?
Dennis: Disclaimer: this is not an official "fix" from Elecraft, nor is the scratchy encoder necessarily a "problem" and it will likely smooth out with use. Proceed at your own risk. Similar scratchy on mine. Per someone else's suggestion, I removed the encoder's washer (you don't need to remove the nut), polished both sides using a Dremel tool (use a polishing bit with a little dab of polishing compound) -- not a sanding or grinding bit! -- and applied a small bit of white lithium grease. Great improvement, I'd say 98% smooth. For more info see this previous post: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX3-Rec-d-today-td7560208.html 73, --Andrew, NV1B ..
