[Elecraft] KXPD2 Keyer

2023-11-05 Thread chuck gehring
I just received my KXPD2 Keyer. First impressions are that it is very nice.
I say that only because the KXPD1 that I got for my KX1 was a booger to
adjust. My question is about the extra parts that arrived with the KXPD2,
came with a loose spring and two Allen screws. Additionally the photos I
have seen of the KXPD2 appear to show locking set screws that I assume lock
in the adjustment screws, and on mine those holes are tapped for screws but
no screws are there. The instructions mention that there is a compound on
the adjustment screws the prevent the adjustment screws from walking out.
Are the loose screws and spring spares? Or are they something that I can
install?

Re: [Elecraft] KXPD2 paddle not working

2022-03-15 Thread Dave New

Gary,

There was an issue with early KXPD2 paddles where one or the other
screws in the back of the assembly were slightly proud, and would
short that side out against the KX2 chassis if the thumbscrews were
completely tightened.

On my KX2, I now have a small chip of paint missing on the left side,
where that screw head had scraped the paint a bit, shorting out that
side of the paddle. It turns out that when turning the KX2 on, if it
senses a paddle line shorted, I think it ignores it, so depending on
your specific situation, you may find that one side or the other of
the paddle may not work, depending on which side was shorted when you
turned on the radio. If you leave the thumbscrews loose when turning
it on, you may find it works, then if you tighten the thumbscrew, you
will suddenly get repeating dots or dashes (depending on the shorted
side).

I 'fixed' mine by filing down the screw head, and putting a bit of
scotch tape over the paint chip. Unless you are looking closely, it's
not noticeable.

Elecraft did make alternate screws available for the KXPD2, but I
never bothered. It works fine for me, now.

Thanks Chris and Mike,
I initially tried a continuity check and had little luck confirming
bad or good continuity.   I spent some time this morning putting it
in, taking it out, adjusting spacing, etc.  Everything was pretty
inconsistent.  For a while I had the left side of the paddle working
and the right not working, for a while everything was fine and now,
believe it or not the left paddle is working and the right paddle is
working as long as I don't completely tighten the left thumbscrew
that holds it on to the kx2 hihi!  I'd guess it needs a cleaning.
I've misplaced the smaller allen wrench for the pivot screws so may
try to round one up and see if I can get it apart and cleaned and
back together.  Or... maybe leave that left thumbscrew a little
loose :)!

Thanks for both of your comeback!

[Elecraft] KXPD2 screws

2020-11-17 Thread Frederick Dwight
I have thoroughly enjoyed my KXPD2 iambic paddle. I do not consider the finger
spacing “bizarrely wide”. My Kent dual lever paddle which I used happily for
decades, is spaced about the same. We all have our own preferences, so when I
ordered my N3ZN paddle some years ago I did opt for a model with slightly less
space. We all have our preferences, and if a parameter happens to be
important, great, specify that. I have used dozens of paddles in my 66 year ham
career, some with wide spaces, some narrow, some with magnetic return, some
spring return and made peace with nearly all of them, even with my KX1 paddle
which I still use occasionally for ultra portability. Personally if I was
budget constrained I could easily enjoy my KX2 paddle or even the old Kent wide
spaced paddle as my only paddle. I have even tested and used some of the
foreign paddles in my shack which I am sure cost well over $500 and consider
the KXPD2, even with its wide spaced finger pieces, a close second choice.
Perhaps this is not relevant, but I enjoy very hot sauce on nearly everything.
I do not consider mild hot sauce inferior, or expect others to choke down my
sauce.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPD2 screws

2020-11-16 Thread Mike Morrow
Refer to the instruction sheet for the KXPD2:

https://ftp.elecraft.com/KX2/Manuals%20Downloads/E740295%20KXPD2%20Paddle%20Instructions%20Rev%20C.pdf

This states that the thumb screws are 4-40 half-inch long.

I regret greatly my purchase of the KXPD2 in 2017. It is the worst iambic key
I've used in the past 40 years, with a bizarrely wide finger spacing that's
twice that of the KXPD3 and all other iambic keys I've used. It permits
adjustment of contact spacing only and not the important spacing between
paddles. The paddle finger spacing is so wide as to be unusable. Mine arrived
missing one of the set screws (not shown or listed in the instruction sheet)
designed to lock the contact spacing set screws. The key came with a spare
spring that is not described in the instructions (is it the same spring force
as the installed spring?). The key requires two different Allen wrenches, but
has a storage channel in the key frame for only one. The design should have
used only one size Allen wrench for ALL adjustments.

I suggest caveat emptor for the KXPD2 and the MH3, just as I did 20 years ago
for the K1 KTS1 and KBT1.

Everything else Elecraft that I've owned since 2000 has been great, except for
the radiant heat-absorbing paint job on the KX2.

Al,

The screw size is 6-32 (not metric).
But do contact Elecraft to obtain the proper screws. If the screws
project too far inside the KX3 enclosure, the PC board will be damaged.
I do know it can take a while to get items 'across the pond', but for
the health of your KX3, get the proper screws.

I can't help you with the screw size, but I recommend contacting
Elecraft on this. The point on one of the screws is ground down to
eliminate some type of physical interference in the KX3. It would be
wise to use the screws that come with the paddle.

[Elecraft] KXPD2 Extra Spring?

2018-10-31 Thread Lou Voerman W2ROW
I just received a new KXPD2 paddle from Elecraft. In the envelope was a
loose, extra spring with no documentation as to its purpose. Does anyone
know if the extra spring is the same as the original or is it some kind of
tension adjustment like the three different springs that came with the
KXPD3?

Also there are now two allen screws per paddle one to set the adjustment and
one to lock it in. All the documentation I could find showed only the one
adjustment screw per paddle.

I did email Elecraft support about the spring but no answer yet.

Thanks,

The numbers I use for spacing and pressure for all of my keys, single
lever paddle, dual lever paddle and straight keys are as follows.

Contact spacing is adjusted with an automotive type or machinist type
feeler gauge to .005" or 0.13mm

The pressure to close the contact, measured at the tip of the level is
20 to 30 grams measure with a push type spring scale.

All of my keys are adjusted accordingly.   Thus changing from one to
another is not an issue.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPD2 - Iambic B

2017-09-22 Thread G4GNX

That paddle behavior is not correct.

I suspect that you have either a faulty paddle or it's just badly adjusted,
with the contacts too close.

I've had a paddle give strange results, where one paddle pulled on the
wiring when operated, which in turn pulled the wire on the opposite paddle
and made it operate too.

AFAIK there's nothing in software/firmware to allow that behavior to be set.

Just starting to use my KPXD2 paddles on my KX2. I have them set to Iambic
B.

The left paddle will give only dits if pressed and held any length of time.
The right paddle when pressed will give either dahs or fits and dahs,
depending on length of press. I can do a R or K by pressing the right paddle
alone.

My other dual paddles don't do that. Am I missing something? I've removed

[Elecraft] KXPD2 - Iambic B

2017-09-21 Thread MaverickNH
Just starting to use my KPXD2 paddles on my KX2. I have them set to Iambic B.
The left paddle will give only dits if pressed and held any length of time.
The right paddle when pressed will give either dahs or fits and dahs,
depending on length of press. I can do a R or K by pressing the right paddle
alone.

My other dual paddles don't do that. Am I missing something? I've removed
and replaced a few times.

Be sure the plug is fully inserted into the jack. Sounds like you have
only one of the two circuits connected. Unless you have set up for left
handed operation the dots should be on the left.

Tom,

I do not know, but I would expect the screw size to be either 4-40 or if
smaller, 2-56. Elecraft uses US sized screws.

[Elecraft] KXPD2 contact post screws...

2017-06-19 Thread Tom Francis, W1TEF

Greetings,

I've been plagued with an issue involving the KXPD2 paddles contact posts,
namely the posts coming loose and the screws so loose that the posts
actually
fall out of the paddles. This is not a one-off issue - I've been
through four sets
of these paddles and they all succumb to the same problem. I've tried
non-hardening
Loc-Tite, Loc-Tite blue goo - in short everything other than Permatex to
hold

the screws and contact posts in place - nothing seems to have any effect on
the posts coming loose.

After thinking about it, and experimenting a little, I've come to the
conclusion
that the issue is the screws, not the posts - I believe that the screws
are too short
and need to be longer to properly keep tension on the posts under normal
use.

I'm also convinced that the minor "warming" of the area where the KXPD2
attaches
to the radio exacerbates the problem - this may be just my own idea
conceptually

and I realize it seems unlikely to be a problem, but you never know.

It is what it is - what I need is to size the screws that hold the
contact posts in place

so I can experiment with longer screws.

Anybody happen to know what the screw size is? And before you ask, yes
I know
about "better" keys and I do use them, but I want to solve this issue as
I really like
the idea of the built in paddles - it's very convenient when operating
mobile.

Very best regards,

Tom, W1TEF

Re: [Elecraft] KXPD2 Paddle

2017-05-28 Thread K9ZTV
Tom ...

I feel your pain but not your conclusion. For me the post-loosening problem
was solved with Loctite Blue. Since that didn't work for you, Loctite Red is
the next logical step. If that doesn't work, JB Weld most certainly will.
Just a drop of either adhesive coating the entire shank of the screw(s) will
absolutely make that a permanent cure. Carefully done, the fix is invisible.
Why Elecraft doesn't do it as a routine step in the manufacturing process I
don't know.

The KXPD2 is an excellent mini-paddle once the posts are permanently anchored.

[Elecraft] KXPD2 Paddle

2017-05-28 Thread Tom Francis, W1TEF

Greetings,

First, before I go any further, I have nothing but the highest regard
for Elecraft's Customer
Support and Service. I've had several issues with my KX2 that were due
to operator error
and Elecraft has fixed my self-induced KX2 injuries quickly and
efficiently. Plus, I've had

a couple of other dealings with Customer Service all outstanding.

However. ;-)

I've been dealing with a KXPD2 paddle issue since I purchased my KX2
last year. I've gone

through four of them all with the exact same problem.

To wit: After use, say half hour or so, the contact posts loosen up and
the CW becomes
impossible. I've tried everything I know how to do - Loc-Tite blue goo,
used a mini-torque
wrench to set torque, pushed the envelope with tightening up the screws
- the contact posts

loosen up.

I have a very light touch with my paddles with very close spacing as CW
is my primary
mode of choice for 54 years. So I don't think that its heavy tapping or
wide spacing
that is causing the problem. If I were to guess, I believe it is a
dissimilar materials issue -
metal screws, plastic base, warm radio causing the plastic to expand
JUST THAT LITTLE

BIT to loosen up the screws.

Now here's the thing - four paddles all having the same issue on the
same radio with

the same operator seems to be indicative of a manufacturing problem.

Maybe it is peculiar to me - I'm not discounting that, but it seems
unusual. What I'm
wondering is if anybody else who owns and uses these paddles have the
same issue?

Thanks.

Very best regards,

2016-09-18 Thread Jim Finan
Re: Loctite:

I'd suggest Loctite 'Purple' (222). Still accomplishes the task but much easier
to adjust/disassemble later. Especially important with small fasteners and
tools.

If you're installing 6mm, 8mm bolts on your car, Blue is likely the best choice.

Temporary emergency solution: eye-glass kit containing small Phillips
screwdriver available at any convenience store, airport, hotel, notions
counter, drug store, etc.

Permanent but removable solution: screw-threads lightly coated with Loctite
Blue (not Loctite Red).

[Elecraft] KXPD2 paddle problem

A few weeks ago there was some discussion regarding the contact posts coming
loose on the KXPD2 paddles. I keep experiencing this problem, and can't keep

2016-07-05 Thread Edward Kacura via Elecraft
One thing I've learned about Elecraft in the last almost 10 yrs, is that good
things come to those who wait !
I've yet to be disappointed by them, the crew at Elecraft are the BEST IMHO !!!

Re: [Elecraft] KXPD2 Shipping status?

2016-07-05 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
We had a minor production glitch last week and are awaiting delivery of a part
for the KXPD2 today or tomorrow. We should begin shipping KXPD2s against the
backlog later this week. I'll update the status page to reflect this.

know that is of concern to some.

Also, the KXPD2 features a special anti-vibration treatment of the
adjustment screws that helps keep them in place.

And lastly, only ONE wrench is required to adjust he contact spacing, and
that wrench has a stowage location on the bottom of the paddles so it's
always handy.

   * What are the differences between these two
options? I see the KXPD3 is $20 or so higher
in price, but I'm more interested in
construction and performance (how they feel)
 differences.
   * Is one easier to use than the other, or is the
only plus of the KXPD2 its smaller size?
   * Are there other factors I should consider?

Since I've not used the KXPD3, I'm pretty much in the dark -- so any input
