[Elecraft] Loss of speaker audio K3
Keith, My K3 lost it's audio in the same fashion yesterday as I powered it up for Field Day yesterday. There was a repetitive crackle as the speaker audio died. The audio come back later, but the crackle was 20 dB louder than the signals of interest. The headphone audio was unaffected. I reloaded my last good configuration and all the latest firmware, hoping against hope, and of course that did not help. Looks like a harware problem in the speaker amp circuitry. I did do the mod to protect the output chip and I never plug anything into the speaker jack when the radio is on. So as far as I can tell, this just happened spontaneously. I'll be interested to hear what Gary has to say at K3support. 73, Andy Message: 17 Date: Sun, 28 Jun 2009 12:04:45 +0800 From: Keith Bainbridge Subject: [Elecraft] Loss of speaker audio K3 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: <4a46ebdd.30...@arach.net.au> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed I've had a report today that one of the clubs K3's has lost all audio from the internal speaker and the rear speaker jack, it just crackled and disappeared. The headphones are still working fine. All menu settings are correct, but no audio. As I'm not there at present I'm unable to do any other checks but the guys using the radio are fully conversant with the menu settings. Any ideas guys ? I will pay the club a visit on tuesday to check it out but wondered if anyone else had come across this before. 73 Keith -- Keith R K Bainbridge VK6RK/ VK6XH http://vk6rk.blogspot.com Northern Corridor Radio Group Inc VK6NC /VK6ANC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Loss of Speaker Audio K3
OK, I know it is usefull to cover all the bases. I had a stereo speaker plug going into the rear speaker jack, Icom SP 20 speaker, no filters on the speaker were turned on. The speaker menu was set to 1 as I only was using one speaker. Running 3.14, the only firmware version I have ever had in the rig. I bought the rig used, when I got the rig the speaker menu was set to 1. Re: [Elecraft] Loss of speaker audio K3
Ok I was wondering if you were running something older than 3.14... Being that there was a new speaker protection system put into place in that version: * SPEAKER PROTECTION: If you’re set up for stereo speakers (CONFIG:SPKRS = 2), but insert a mono speaker plug, the right speaker output will be shorted to ground. This can cause excess current drain if you turn volume up to high levels. The K3 now detects this condition, automatically turning off the right channel (SPRKS = 1). If the left channel is shorted, the K3 will reduce AF gain and flash “HI CUR”. Perhaps the software didn't catch the problem soon enough... ~Brett (KC7OTG) On Sun, 2009-06-28 at 19:12 -0400, Toby Pennington wrote: > Brett Howard wrote: What version of the firmware were you running when this > happened to you? > > ~Brett > > > Brett, I was running 3.14 firmware. I got a HI CURRENT warning on the display and the speaker went out. Headphones still worked OK. I noticed after the incident that the headphone plug was loose and was slipping from side to side. I tightened the nut up but it was too late to help any. My rig was a factory built unit, so was surprised something like that was loose. There have been two other reports of lost speaker audio just this weekend, so be on the lookout for loose nuts.
