Re: [Elecraft] MFJ 1234

2020-06-15 Thread A Kiddoo
Been there done that. In one word - DON’T. RigPi only gives you remote control
of VFO. All other radio control is via on/off functions that you have to
program in code. Audio is iffy at best using mumble. This thing is a
compilation of free software loosely glued together under a slick looking web
interface. I sold mine at a $75 loss just to get rid of it. You can setup a Pi
with Flrig and other programs and have more control for free.

Re: [Elecraft] MFJ 1234

2020-06-14 Thread Rick Bates, NK7I
I've used (successfully) a USB relay to momentarily toggle AUX line 8 (?
check) to remotely power the K3 on but now I've switched to the N6TV
S-Box-USB and Y-Box system, which works in much the same way (and can
remotely power on the Elecraft amps, cleans up cabling etc.).

Both methods require a computer that runs the 'turn on' file in bootup,
OR being able to access that file from the main screen.  I have no
problem leaving the station on at all times.

For whatever reason, only when I was > 1000 miles away did the power
blip and the K3 wasn't there.  It got old to have someone go in, just to
turn the radio off.  These methods took away that worry.

Even something as 'silly' as a Raspberry Pi toggling that AUX line once
every XX minutes would work (and could provide other features).

Re: [Elecraft] MFJ 1234

2019-07-19 Thread A Kiddoo
John-

Been there done that with RigPi. This thing is a “glitter turd”. RigPi gives
you variable remote control of VFO. Period. All other radio control is via
on/off buttons. Want to change your bandpass, IF shift, RF gain, etc? Nope.
Only on/off buttons that you have to program via hamlib commands. Then there is
the all the issues setting up Mumble for audio transport. I had two beta
testers contact me privately admitting that RigPi was released too soon. MFJ
claims “Easy as 1-2-3.” - 1. Turn on 2. Config 3. Goto 1.
I sold mine for a $75 loss and told the buyer what to expect. His problem now.
If you could get Mumble or a similar program to work for audio transport, you
would be $300 ahead to setup Rpi with VNC and install Flrig (which has variable
controls) and any other software you want to use. RigPi tells you to use VNC
for digital modes anyway - so why buy it?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] MFJ-1234?

2019-05-31 Thread A Kiddoo
I bought the MFJ-1234. Have connected it to FT-450. My KX3 will remain portable
rig. The RigPi is 4 parts - Rpi, windkeyer card, audio card, and software. I
now have it setup on a Rpi I already owned with generic USB audio dongle
connected to headphone jack and mic on radio. Works fine. I don’t intend to use
for CW so I will soon be listing my MFJ-1234 for sale on QRZ. I don’t need the
data cable because audio from it is not processed and not acceptable for SSB.
Software is excellent with low latency on CAT. Audio is carried via Mumble
server which is pre-configured in software. You will need to download/setup the
Mumble client for remote. So if you want to do SSB on the cheap- just buy the
software. Very good docs at rigpi.net/help which should
answer most.
