[Elecraft] P3 Clicking
Normally when you change bands with the K3 the P3 will click(relay?) once and the scope level will drop down a little. Recently I hear the click happen ever once in awhile just sitting there no band change. On further investigation it appears to only happen on 40 meters and I discovered I had the preamp on. Once I turned the preamp off the clicking seems to have disappeared. The relay bypasses the P3's preamp when the signal level starts to overload the front end. On 40 meters strong SW broadcast signals (that you can't see on the screen) can cause that to happen. John, Maybe it's -110 dBm average noise, but with -20 dBm static crashes? Normally you would see these as broad lighter areas on the waterfall, short duration. You may also have a noise source that's peaking high, but outside of the P3's visible span range. If it's anywhere near 40m, the P3 would still pick it up and it might cause the detector to disable the preamp. I've had this happen with SWBC signals on voice peaks. [Elecraft] P3 - clicking and display jump

John, The P3 automatically turns off its internal preamp (using a relay) whenever a strong signal overloads the front end. You might try turning off the preamp in the K3 or even turning on the attenuator. That's a good idea anyway when the band is wide open, to keep the K3 nice and linear. [Elecraft] P3 clicking sound
To all, Received my P3 last week and love it. Just one small issue. There is a very soft but noticeable clicking sound when I am using the P3/K3 on the low bands -- 80 and 160M. The click repeats itself about every 7 or 8 seconds. Sounds like a relay within the P3. I only hear it on those two bands. Does anyone know what this is and/or how to stop it. It's probably the P3's preamp function switching on and off.
