RE: [Elecraft] Proset K2 Replace IC with HC-4 ?

2008-06-12 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A
Frank,

I have the hc-4 connected to the K2. Modified the mic gain a bit (change
of R14 on ssb board) and increased processing (change of RP5).
Getting reports that modulation is excellent. I must say that I took
great care in setting the ssb filter using the well known N0SS method.

However if it is that simple, what do you guys think? Would you
recommend this or is it better to leave the IC with the Proset K2 at the
K3?

[Elecraft] Proset K2 Replace IC with HC-4 ?

2008-06-12 Thread Frank Lammel

Hi all,

I am thinking about replacing the IC Mic in the Proset K2 with a HC-4.
My questing: Can I do this without any aditional things? Just solder out
the IC and solder in the HC-4? Or isn't it that simple? Of course with
no bias then...

However if it is that simple, what do you guys think? Would you
recommend this or is it better to leave the IC with the Proset K2 at the K3?

Frank,

I have a Proset K2 (IC) and a Proset 5 originally purchased for another
application. I can use both with either the K3 or the K2 (with an UN-PCB IMA
for
quick changing the K2 bias).
I find both work well with either rig, giving a slight edge to the Proset K2
version.

In my opinion, one can always use an extra mic, I can handle the most
intricate of electronic surgery, but would rather not get into modifying a mic,
 and
would suggest buying the other one. I'm sure you could sell the least used
and get more than enough to make up for the difference. Maybe someone else
can answer the question, is all the electronics for the Proset K2 (IC) in the
mic boom? If so, maybe it would be appropriate to buy a boom assembly with
what you want, and make a swap, rather than modify?

RE: [Elecraft] Proset K2 Replace IC with HC-4 ?

2008-06-12 Thread Dick Dievendorff
If it were my headset I'd leave it as it is. I'd prefer to have an
unmodified Proset K2 than a one-of-a-kind customer modified headset. I'm not
sure how hard it is to open the part of the microphone that contains the
element and put it back without damage.

If you were buying a used headset from another ham, which would you prefer,
a "stock" unmodified Proset K2, or a "user modified" unit?

I just don't see any reason to do this.

But it's your Proset, I guess you can do whatever you wish with it.

Re: [Elecraft] Proset K2 Replace IC with HC-4 ?

2008-06-10 Thread David Yarnes

Frank and All,

I'm not sure what radio you are using, but on my K3 I get better reports
using my headset with the IC element than I do with the other one that has
the HC4/HC5 combo. Also, with a little manipulation of the internal
equalizer, you can make the IC element sound very much like the HC4 I would
think. But if you still want to try changing it, it wouldn't be a hard
thing to do. Just swap out the elements. On the K3 you would then remove
the bias by menu change. On the K2 you would have to lift the jumper
providing bias to pin 1.

I'd change (or remove) the label on the side of the boom that says 'IC'. :)

What is the benefit in making this change? Are you using this headset

I've got the K2 version of the Proset 2 sold by Elecraft and it works well.
I think the difference between them is that the Elecraft version is
actually the iC version you can get from Heil.

At least mine has the little iC sticker on the boom pivot.
