[Elecraft] Single Lever paddle

2005-12-21 Thread CTMorton
Interesting thread about SKN, different keys, preferences, etc. I have
always been a single lever paddle guyjust couldn't get the hang of
the squeeze thingy...and now, due to arthritis, right thumb decides to
do it's own thing at times.
So, I have been looking for a replacement paddle and finally found it
from Bengali. He makes a single lever paddle, called the Simplex mono
and it's a beaut!
Bengali has, up until recently, quoted his prices in Euros; so multiply
by 1.18 up to recent exchange rate of 1.30 +. Imagine my delight when I
ordered the key to see a quote of 165 Euro OR USDollarsWith the Euro
trading at 1.18 or so, this is a real bargin compared to previous
purchases...so, if interested in a super quality key, now may be the
time to order, before the USD dives and Bengali goes back to only
charging in Euros...

Merry Christmas y Felix Nuevo Anos.

[Elecraft] Single Lever Paddle/Key(?)

2007-09-12 Thread Jack Regan
To all the cw buffs,

I'm a little confused.

As far as I can tell, a single lever paddle, when connected to a keyer, sends
dots when pushed in on one direction and dashes when pushed in the opposite
direction. Presumably this prevents the possibility of a keyer sensing both
contacts closed at the same time.

Thus, it occurs to me that if the keyer in my KX1 is set for Iambic A, Then I
will get continuous, properly spaced dots or dashes when I close the
appropriate contact but will lose the "benefits" of squeezed" characters!

Is this correct?

Similarly, if my keyer is set for mode B, I would still get the dots and dashes
but lose the auto completion function as well as the squeese function.

Have I got it right?

BTW, I am using Iambic A right now, and always have. It works fine but I
sometimes find myself naturally just sending certain squeese character in a
"single paddle manner." Given the fact that many top ops seem to like and use
single lever paddles, I thought I would give it a try!

Thanks in advance,

Jack, AE6GC

PS. I just got my 10 wpm Certificate of Code Proficiency from ARRL. I am more
proud of that than passing the Extra exam and WAS!!! I am going for 15 wpm
tonight during the West Coast Qualifying Run. Wish me luck!

Using a single lever paddle with a keyer that is iambic A, iambic B or
non-iambic is exactly the same.

It makes automatic dots and dashes, and is self-completing (which means
that once you start a dot or dash, the element and its following space
will be created regardless of when you let go of the paddle).

The only time there is a difference is when you close both contacts
together, which you can't do with one lever!

Re: [Elecraft] Single Lever Paddle/Key(?)

2007-09-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jack,

Congratulations on your proficiency accomplishments, keep up the good work.

With a single lever paddle, you will not notice any difference between
mode A and mode B.

If you use a dual paddle and squeeze both levers then release them both
at the same time - mode A will complete the current element, but mode B
will complete the current element and then send an opposite element.

You do not loose the completion characteristics for either mode with a
single lever paddle.

As far as I know you're correct. The intended way to do iambic keying is to
make both contacts simultaneously.

[Elecraft] Single Lever Paddle Follow Up

2007-09-27 Thread Jack Regan
Thanks for all the input re: single lever paddles.

Since I had just recieved my 15 wpm endorsement for the ARRL Certificate of
Proficiency (obtained at 10 wpm) I decided to treat myself to a single lever
paddle. I got a good deal on a Kent SP-1 on eBay and made the deal.

I love it. It works and looks great. I have been using a chrome Bencher Iambic
and it works just fine. It even works well as a single lever paddle. Just
don't squeeze it!

I hooked the Kent up to both my Kenwood TS-570D and my KX1. The Kenwood
appears to have only an iambic A mode and my KX1 was set for mode A. The Kent
worked fine on both rigs.

I then set the KX1 to iambic B and expected to lose the squeeze function, as in
mode A, but still get the opposite dash or dot as the case may be, when I
"held" the dot or dash past the half way point. This did not happen. I did
not think this could be because the KX1 "knew" I had a single lever paddle but
I tested this with my Bencher and got the same results. Anybody have an idea?
