[Elecraft] Elecraft W2 problem
Hi I have an Elecraft W2 and a HF 2kW coupler which I have a couple of issues with and appreciate any thoughts. #1 - When pressing the Range button the range cycles from 20 W to Auto. When on Auto it defaults to 20 W until transmitting. When in the 20W range (or Auto) all of the SWR leds and the first power led light up. #2 - When cycling through the ranges it skips the 2 W range. I reversed the cable and reloaded the firmware with no issues, Here is a link to a viedo showing what i am talking about. https://1drv.ms/v/s!AtLmO2vBrPixk394MqxJ7BkwiV0w?e=2acerw I appreciate any thoughts. -- Mike Stokes KK9V __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] W2 problem
At a guess, because it's simple to crimp. I doubt that the normal twisted pairs of CAT5 was the reason to not use it. -73 de M0XDF (from my iPhone) > On 21 Jun 2016, at 11:29, Johnwrote: > > . Re: [Elecraft] W2 problem
Hi All, I'd be interested in the answers to this, as my W2 also recently lost the same R10 component. And especially the answers about the Ethernet/signal cables too... 73, and a firm left handshake, John (2E0XLX) -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of STEPHEN BUNTING Sent: 20 June 2016 16:03 To: elecraft <elecraft@mailman.qth.net> Subject: [Elecraft] W2 problem Hi everyone, I have a little used W2 wattmeter that has stopped working, but I have recently had access to a working unit so I could test the display and sensor unit independently. Both of mine have faults - The display has lost port nr 1 and it looks like R10 has been damaged on the PCB. What physical size is this resistor? I can see from the cct diagram that it is 330R. I don't do much SMD work so don't recognise the physical sizes. My 2KW HF sensor displays high SWR and low power into a known good load when used with my friends "good" W2. I cant see any physical problems, so how do I go about fault finding this or getting it fixed? Can I use a regular Ethernet cable to connect display and sensor? I used one to test my display with a known good sensor on port 2, but sometimes the display went haywire whilst on the air. I see elecraft supply a flat 8P8C RJ45 cable, so I guess there is an engineering reason for that? Re: [Elecraft] W2 PROBLEM (Larry Royster)
Hi, after carrying out on air tests with several K3-100s I found that a PSK signal becomes unacceptably wide over about 48 Watts out (indicated on the K3 meter and/or a power meter). 80 Watts out would not get you any friends on a crowded band. Similarly, the internal 10 Watt amp starts to spread with PSK at around 5watts, so with the K3 for PSK best to avoid power over about 50 watts and between 5 and 12 watts (when the 100W PA kicks in). 73 Gerry M0VAA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] W2 PROBLEM (Larry Royster)
Thank you for sharing your findings . I find on my K2/10 5 watts is good. On K2/100 and K3 25 watts is good. My KX3 is good at 4 watts , I think it is lower because max power is 10 watts. 73's Gerald On Sep 19, 2013 1:36 PM, Gerry McGowan m0...@yahoo.com wrote: Hi, after carrying out on air tests with several K3-100s I found that a PSK signal becomes unacceptably wide over about 48 Watts out (indicated on the K3 meter and/or a power meter). 80 Watts out would not get you any friends on a crowded band. I HAVE A WATT METER THAT SEEMS TO WORK OKAY, EXCEPT WHEN I FIRST TRANSMIT, USING PSK31 MODE. IT TAKES THREE OR FOUR TRANSMITS BEFORE IT INDICATES THE POWER LEVEL SHOWN ON MY K3, WHICH IS EITHER 40 OR 80 WATTS. I HAVE AN ELECRAFT POWER UNIT THAT IS IN THE CIRCUIT BT ON STANDBY. Re: [Elecraft] W2 PROBLEM
Have you checked the ALC setting? You should have 4 bars of ALC showing when you transmit with the 5th bar flashing. You can use TX test mode to set the ALC without going out on the air. If you don't have the ALC set correctly, the K3 will start transmitting at less than the power it is set at and slowly increase power as the power measurement feedback corrects the output power. Re: [Elecraft] W2 PROBLEM
It's also quite possible that your wattmeter is trying to display average power output, in which case it takes a while to display the correct output. Check the manual for that wattmeter and see what it says. Usually you have the choice between peak (which you should be using) and average. 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bill Frantz Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2013 2:47 PM To: Larry Royster Cc: elacraft reflrvto 2 Subject: Re: [Elecraft] W2 PROBLEM Have you checked the ALC setting? Re: [Elecraft] W2 PROBLEM
Holding the SENSOR and RANGE buttons simultaneously changes between peak-hold and average. You might also want to set the range to 200 since 'auto' may take a couple seconds to determine the correct range and 2KW would be too high for just 40 or 80 watts. -Mike- KI0HA On 9/18/2013 9:05 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: It's also quite possible that your wattmeter is trying to display average power output, in which case it takes a while to display the correct output.
