Re: [Elecraft] XG3 All-Band RF Signal Source/phase noise performance?

2011-04-14 Thread Alan Bloom
Someone asked about using the XG3 to measure the skirt attenuation of a
crystal filter.

If the phase noise is -105 dBc / Hz, then with a 500 Hz crystal filter
the filter skirts will disappear into the noise at about -105 + 10 *
log(500) = -78 dB. With a 2.7 kHz filter, it works out to -71 dB.

Re: [Elecraft] XG3 All-Band RF Signal Source/phase noise performance?

2011-04-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
  John,

Sorry to hear that your 8640 is nearing its end.

My recommendation (and my personal preference) - hang onto the HP8640
for as long as it works - in the available signal generator field, it
cannot be beat for low phase noise along with a well calibrated output
attenuator. Sure it takes a couple hours for it to stop drifting, but
the other factors make it a very worthwhile tool for the workbench.
I now have 2 HP8640's, but I have ordered the XG3 because it is
convenient and will be the "workhorse" of the workbench signal
generators. But when it comes down to applications that require no
leakage, and well calibrated output levels down to -140 dBm (and below
with in-line attenuators), you can bet that the old '8640 will be my
generator of choice.

The XG3 will be replacing my XG1 and XG2, but the HP8640 will stay at
the bench for those times when nothing else will do as well.

Re: [Elecraft] XG3 All-Band RF Signal Source/phase noise performance?

2011-04-13 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi John,

Phase noise is specified in the manual. It is a relatively constant
-105 dBc/Hz, even at very close spacings, which is excellent
performance for a low-cost, wide-range signal source.

I wouldn't amplify it to 1KW.

Let me know how it works for you as a replacement for the HP8640. Not
as many knobs and switches, but it runs from a 9-V battery.

2011-04-13 Thread juergen
Hi

No phase noise performance data in the manual. What is the phase noise
performance of the XG3 like?

My HP8640 is being held together by a miracles and prayers, I need a
replacement.
