Re: [Elecraft] K3 External Speakers
Ditto on the West Mountain Radio COMspkr. Ordered a pair after reading reviews here on the forum and after installation, it took about 5 seconds to hear the difference over my computer speakers. My other speakers had RFI on certain bands, but these have no RFI on all the HF bands with the KPA500 running 500 watts. I am extremely satisfied. They are nice looking and have enough of a base area that they will not tip over easily unless actually pushed over. I am pleased. BTW, they arrived within a week of ordering them on-line. In most manufacturing companies, there is an engineer whose job it is to try to remove as many parts as possible from every product so that it can be made more cheaply and still be sold. RFI suppression components almost always the first to go. Open up a noisy product (if you can) and you'll find empty holes on the board where those parts should be. The only time those holes are every filled is when the prototype is submitted for EMC testing. 73, Jim Brown K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I also have the West Mountain Radio COMspkr and agree it is absolutely clear and free of interference. If I turn on my external computer speakers (creature speakers hooked to my iMac) then I can hear a loud buzz whenever I key down from those creature speakers but absolutely nothing from the COMspkr. I use a pair of amplified Labtec computer speakers with my K3's rear Stereo speaker output I like the ability to either listen on headphones and speakers or turn down the speakers and have a quieter room using the cans although I did have some rfi initially it was getting in from the little wall wart power supply for the speakers a simple fix was 8-9 wraps of the power cord where it entered the speaker around a small yellow toroid salvaged from a dead computer supply later I upped my power to 400w with an AL-811 and and the rfi from the speakers was back this time I did a 6 turn wrap through one of the square snapon toroids this was placed on the line coming from the K3 to the speaker input at the end right next to where it entered the amplified speaker all I'm saying is don't just throw out the idea of using a set of cheap computer speakers you may have around the shack it may be a really simple fix to get the going. Amplified computer speakers have been a problem for me. They are not well screened for RF and on occasion I have had bad feedback problems. Eliminating the amplified speakers solved the feedback problem. I have a pair of cheap Trust computer speakers which sound good but I needed to wind all the cables on ferrites to keep the RF out and still got some breakthrough on some bands. And unfortunately they looked like cheap computer speakers. I ordered some Logitech speakers which were black and looked good next to the K3 but it turned out they were so wide open to RFI they were picking up a buzz from a nearby DECT cordless phone and I nearly had heart failure the first time I pressed the PTT. The trouble with computer speakers is that most of them are unshielded and there is usually no way to get inside them to add bypass capacitors and filters except by using a hammer. So I'm still looking for some smart, compact, RFI-proof speakers with decent bass response, preferably passive (who needs another wall-wart) that I can use with my K3. The AF Output mod had been made to (at least) two of the K3's that suffered the audio output IC failure, mine included. The audio IC is robust, so I'm told, but can only stand so much for so long. BTW, headphone audio still works after the output IC's failure. I have also had a similar need for external speakers. [Elecraft] K3, external speakers and an HF amp.
I guess I missed the word "active". I was worried about the af amp in the K3 (Note to self: Re-read twice before responding to list) Frankie K3/10 1688 just plug it to external Speaker, enable 2 Speakers in the setup Menu . but do not use an linear-hf-amplifier - the af-amp in the active speakers is not hf protected 73 OE6KYG KX1 244 K2 1331 K3 115 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3, external speakers and an HF amp.
I use an external speaker on my K3. (Sounds Sweet speaker switch between radios via an iplus by W2IHY) I don't us an amp with the K3 but I do use an amp with my other radios. (Orion II, Omni VII, Jupiter) I do sometimes get a little RF into my small stereo speaker system of which I use to listen to TV or to commercial FM music. I do not see any other RF issues in my ham station. Reading the response from OE6KYG it appears that I could stand the chance of taking out the audio amp in my K3. Is this correct??? [Elecraft] K3 - External Speakers
I just picked up a set of Cyber Acoustics amplified speakers (stereo) Model CA-2012 at my local Fry's Electronics. Cost was just $10. These speakers sound great, and look great set-up on either side of my K3. There is even a headphone jack on the right speaker, which also works great. And no RFI problems that I can find. Anyway, highly recommended. Phil - AD5X ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] k3- external speakers
Lyle, Thank you for the info. I'm about to order a Peavey Impulse II Monitor Speaker for my Yaesu FT-920. The speaker specs out at 16 ohms. This will work for the Yaesu, but I plan to switch this speaker to the K3...just needed to know the range of the K3. -Original Message- From: Lyle Johnson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2007 9:12 PM To: Larry Maguire Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] k3- external speakers > Does anyone know the impedance range of the external speakers for the K3? 4 ohms to 16 ohms ought to work fine. 4 ohms will give you the loudest audio since the amplifier is having to work directly from the 12V supply. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
