When I installed the 250Hz 8 pole filter in my minimal K3 (base
+ K144XV + KXV3A + FM filter), the procedure in the manual
appendix A (p77ff) calls for the removal of the K144XV
transverter. After looking inside, removing it looked
unnecessary, so I proceeded without removing it. I encountered
no problems with this modified procedure. It's really nice to
hear how the background noise goes down as I switch between 300
Hz and 250 Hz and the filter switches in.

The full procedure is a bit long for an email, but please see page 46 in the
current version of the K3 Owners Manual, which is available under Manuals
and Downloads at the Elecraft web page. All of the filter setup functions
are accessed through the CONFIG menus. There are 3 key steps to follow: (1)
Tell the K3 where to find the new filter (slot FLx), its bandwidth and its
frequency offset; for the 8 pole filters such as your KFL3A-400 there is
0.00 frequency offset, (2) Enable the filter for receive mode, and (3)
Activate filter loss compensation (typically 1-2 dB for the 400 Hz 8-pole
filter). You shouldn't need to alter the Transmit Crystal Filter Selection
settings if you have already done this procedure with the stock 2.7 kHz
5-pole filter.
