[Elecraft] surface mount parts

2005-12-17 Thread Steve Jackson
While my AADE L-C meter is irreplaceable, I find that
for identifying / testing surface mount passives,
there's really no equal to the "Smart Tweezers" by
Excelta.

very cool, but a bit pricey :(

best I could find online was $289, maybe they'll come down with
popularity (and when the monkee-copies start hitting the market)

There was an article in one of this year's QSTs describing how to make
tweezers out of copperclad board with leads to your tester for testing caps
and resistors. Looked like about $.25 worth of materials.

Re: [Elecraft] surface mount parts

2005-12-17 Thread n5ib
Oooops, meant this reply to go here, but sent it to QRP-L instead :^))

--

I hadn't seen the QST note about PCB tweezers, but it sounded like a neat
and easy idea so I made up a set. used two strips of scrap Manhattan PCB
material about 3/16" wide by 2 1/2" long, spaced by two thicknesses of
the same stuff. Stripped off all but about 1/4" of the copper, leaving
just a small pad at the end of each strip. Super glued the whole affair
together and wrapped a couple of turns of vinyl tape.

I tinned the copper pads at the business ends and soldered on about 10"
of scrap RG174 to connect to the AADE meter. The coax adds about 35 pF,
but the meter zeroes that out nicely.

Tested by grabbing a 51 pF 0804 size SMT cap. It read 49.8 pF. close
enough.

Great idea... very useful gadget... total cost approximately zero, plus
or minus 10 percent :^))

Now to check those flyspecks I pulled off that old VCR board

Has anyone located the QST article yet. I thumbed through all of the 2005
QST's that I could locate without any luck.

Don't you just hate those guys who tell you about an article in a magazine
and they give the wrong year? ;)
Hints and Kinks, page 64, November 2004 has the description of the smd
tester-tweezers.

Thanks for the correction, Gil. I'm going to make one of these up
for my AADE LCII.

My AADE LCIIB came with a Kelvin clip used to measure SMD capacitors.
I see that AADE sells the clip separately for $15.00.
