RE: [Elecraft] microKeyer with K2/100

2006-02-08 Thread James C. Hall, MD
Thanks Craig:

That answered several things. Yes, I have the K2 cable set. The audio 'J5'
from that set terminates in a 1/8 stereo plug. It would seem that I would
have to rig up something to parallel off of J5 and make a new1/8 connector
to have stereo output. I wonder why I couldn't just use the headphones
connector ? Did you make a new connector in this way ?

As far as the microphone, I probably would just connect direct to the rig; I
was just curious as to why it said only those listed microphones.

Did you get the K2 cable set with the microKEYER? That makes it a little
easier.

I hooked up the audio cable internal to the K2 as instructed and connected
it to the microKEYER connector labelled J5.

I'm using whatever the mic is that Elecraft sells so I can't comment on your
mic.

The Y serial cable goes to the KAT100, K2, and the computer end connects to
the microKEYER. The microKEYER has a separate USB cable that goes to the
computer. There was no gender-changer needed with the K2 cable set that came
with it.

I haven't figured out RTTY or PSK31. Just CW and phone. Those work great. I
like that I can plug a spare keyboard into the microKEYER directly and just
type CW if I need to. For contests my logging software drives everything
just fine but if I need to intercede I can either use the paddles or
keyboard without having to hit whatever combination of function keys lets me
type CW through my logging program.

Subject: [Elecraft] microKeyer with K2/100

Hello all:

I received a microKeyer for Christmas and am just now getting around to
working with it. I reviewed the questions that were submitted to this
reflector back in October, and I have a few questions.

The microKeyer instructions for the K2 cable set involves what appears to be
a cable to J5 to the rear panel for constant level stereo audio. Is this
really necessary ?

It states that only MH1, MD2, and Proset-K2 microphones will work with this
unit. I have the SSB mic settings set for the Kenwood microphones and have
used a Proset headset with the Kenwood adapter with the K2 without problems.
Why would this not work via the microKeyer ? Are there settings that would
make this more flexible ?

I have the K2/100 and the KAT100. The serial communications cable is a jump
cable from the K2 to the KAT to the computer. How can I maintain KAT
functionality and use the microKeyer ? A DB-9 Y-cable at the K2 ? A gender
changer at the computer end of the cable, then to the microKeyer ?
Obviously, the idea is to use only the USB interface of the microKeyer.

Thanks in advance.

If you use the headphone connector you disconnect the K2's speaker. You will
still get audio through your computer but then you'll have to turn the
computer on to use the radio at times when you're not using the microKEYER.
Also the audio you get out of the computer may suck. My little laptop
speaker sounds pretty horrible, though I can plug a headset into the laptop
and it's not bad.

I don't remember what the instructions for the microKEYER said, but that's
how I did it. I ran the wire out an unused hole in the case and it
terminates in a stereo plug. I don't remember if they included that
wire/plug with the K2 cable or if I just dug a connector out of the parts
drawer.

This solution has the potential problem that you may not have an unused hole
on the back of your K2. I used one of the XVTR holes, which I'll probably
never use. (Though I haven't ruled it out yet.)

Yep, I'm using all but the XVTR holes now. It wouldn't be a big deal to
mount a stereo 1/8 plug though. I'll investigate further.

Thanks again.

Re: [Elecraft] microKeyer with K2/100

2006-02-08 Thread Jim Byers

James

If you look in the box your cable came in you should find a female
stereo 1/8 plug and about 12 inches of black shielded audio cable. I
used a three pin Moldex style jack at J5 (same style as the frequency
counter but with three pins) and then used a matching plug on the
shielded wire.

As far as the mike goes microHam are quite adamant that use only
those mikes with that cable.

I have not been able to get enough info yet to figure a way to use
other mikes. I think the problem is that they have to assume that the
Mic configuration header is done one way and they picked Elecraft/
Heil format as the most common. I am presently comparing the diagrams
for the Kenwood cables sets and building a test cable to use a
Kenwood desk mic. If I have success with the test cable I will pass
the info on.

If you make any progress let us know please.
