Re: [Elecraft] K4 Headphones Q

2020-10-19 Thread E.H. Russell
I did an initial test of this headset yesterday and found that the audio
quality was good, but there was some background hiss. It could have been
because the headset was not properly powered, since I have it plugged in to
my mixer with phantom to 2.5v jerry rigged. I have a proper adapter coming
tomorrow, and will do some proper analytics and comparison to other mics.

I took a chance on the QC-35 while on sale and so far I'm pleased. I also
bought an accessory boom mike that plugs into the connector on the QC-35 and
so far that has worked well in OTA tests. My QC-15 no longer attenuates my
KPA1500 fans beyond just covering my ears with the cups so something has
gone wrong with those. The QC-35 are very effective. I use a ModMic with the
QC-15 which works very well and may substitute for the accessory mike if
that doesn't pan out.

The boom mike came with a much more rugged cable than the one which came
with the QC-35. I was concerned about the mike moving but with the shirt
clip I find it stays in place to my satisfaction. I don't know if it will
reject amp fan noise however. I'll have to try that today. The fan never
gets above speed 2 on SSB so not much of a challenge. The boom mike came
with a TRRS to dual TRS splitter which worked well on the back on my K3s.

The QC35 claims 40hrs of battery life when wired which is far more time than
I'll ever put in any contest so that isn't a concern. When unplugged it
becomes a Bluetooth set which I've paired with both my phone and PC.
That means that I no longer need a PC headset cluttering up my desk.for when
I want to do MorseRunner or listen to a Youtube session.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Headphones Q

2020-10-18 Thread Jim Miller
Just did an OTA test and Fan Speed 2 was inaudible but Fan speed 3 could be
easily heard. But since I've never seen Fan 3 in an SSB environment that I
can remember I think this will do. Obviously other shack noise similar to
FS3 would also be an issue but that never happens here. M/M environments
may not work.

I'll run a test later with my ModMic to see how that fares vs fan speed
setting for comparison.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Headphones Q

2020-10-17 Thread Jim McDonald
I just received the cable I ordered from Amazon to replace the one that came
with the Bose QC-35 II headphones. Made in China, not surprisingly, but has a
5', flexible, braided cover and comes with a screw-on 1/4" adaptor for the
front panel headphone jack. It came just in time before my cat ate through the
very thin, OEM cable.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088CNY2VV/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s01?ie=UTF8=1

Unlike my ancient Bose QC2 headphones, they work without turning them on,
saving the rechargeable battery, when noise cancelling (or Bluetooth) isn't
required.

They work great with my cell phone using Bluetooth too.

-Original Message-

The rechargeable battery with noise cancelling on and Bluetooth off is rated at
40 hours. It uses the same USB charging plug as my Logitech keyboard, so I
have a charging cable on my desk.

I connect to my K3S with the cable, which is inadequate. It's 4' long,
lightweight, and flimsy. The jack on the headphones is a sub-mini, 2.5mm, and
the other end is a mini-phone plug, 3.5mm. Amazon has several replacement
cables that are heavier and designed for these headphones.

How do you deal with battery life in contesting?

I have one of these aftermarket boom mics for my QC25. It works fine. Just
be careful of the wiring of the L and R channels because the adapter
splitters sometimes switch them.

I use this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Z0EP3I/ which converts the
mic to XLR and also boosts RFI resistance. For some this might be getting
pricey for a headset and it's also possible that other solutions are now

The QC series Bose (any of them: 15, 25, 35) noise cancelling makes even
extended operation such a pleasure, and with the Shure I can easily add a great
mic.

With the QC-35 I don't think the internal mic is passed in the cord. At any

Thanks, Ed,
It is helpful to have a recommendation with time under its belt. I browsed for
this device. It seems to be terminated in TQG / TA4F connector... I suppose
that there is an adapter for this. Do you then have a way to mute the Bose mic?
I don't mind wires. I am not happy with BT connectivity in general.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Headphones Q

2020-10-14 Thread E.H. Russell
Hi Rich,

I wanted a similar result, that is noise canceling headphones combined with
a headset mic. After many trials, I came to the following solution:

Bose QC35 headphones on wired connection
Shure MX153B/O-TQG headset

They both are corded. The Shure fits over the ear and under the QC35 so that
it is barely noticeable.

I highly recommend this solution as providing both excellent noise
cancellation and superb audio quality.

I have been following this thread with interest. I am considering the Bose
QC-35 headphones. I wanted a boom mic to go with, but I have not found one
with decent reviews. Has anyone experience with one that works w the QC-35
II? I guess that by plugging into the headphone the boom mic disconnects the
internal mic. It looks like that mic then plugs into my rig using a TRRS,
and feeds mic and speakers. Is this the way it works? That would make the
plug into the ear cup a speaker feed? I could see almost any good mic
working, even if what I needed to do is run 2 cords: one for the mic and one
for the audio. That would let them work for CW. And otherwise, there should
not be a problem?

I think the context of the conversation was Bluetooth wireless headsets (I
referred to them as "wireless"), which of course are digital. At any rate
that's what I was referring to. Sorry for any confusion.

Neither could work in live sound applications if there was latency.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Headphones Q

2020-10-14 Thread E.H. Russell
Analog radios have almost no latency, but it's almost impossible to find a
pure analog radio anymore. Most conventional radios switch over to DSP in
the IF stage, which introduces anywhere from a few ms of latency up. For
example, the TS-890s hybrid has about 25ms receive latency. Then when you go
to full SDR you probably get a somewhat bigger number, anywhere from 40 up.
But the real source of latency in current systems is Bluetooth, which can
run in the range of 200ms. New Bluetooth protocols aim to bring that down to
a reasonable 40ms, but they aren't widely available yet.

So for now, use wired headphones.

There are newer headsets claiming 40ms latency, but the host must support
the LL format. My estimate for the QC-35 which uses the ATX format is in the
range of 150-250ms. This may not be a problem at slower CW speeds for some
folks, but I couldn't tolerate it.

Sorry, but I need to correct a typo. The cable included with the headphones is
2.5mm at the headphones and 3.5mm at the other (radio) end, so an adaptor is
required, though not provided.

The jack on the headphones is a sub-mini, 2.5mm, and
the other end is a mini-phone plug, 2.5mm. Amazon has several replacement
cables that are heavier and designed for these headphones.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Headphones Q

2020-10-14 Thread Jim McDonald
The rechargeable battery with noise cancelling on and Bluetooth off is rated at
40 hours. It uses the same USB charging plug as my Logitech keyboard, so I
have a charging cable on my desk.

I connect to my K3S with the cable, which is inadequate. It's 4' long,
lightweight, and flimsy. The jack on the headphones is a sub-mini, 2.5mm, and
the other end is a mini-phone plug, 2.5mm. Amazon has several replacement
cables that are heavier and designed for these headphones.

They are over ear, which helps make the noise cancelling extremely effective,
and also the headset is not tiring for long periods of use in contests, for
instance. The prime day price of $199 on amazon is an excellent buy in my
opinion.
