RE: [Elecraft] More rumors?
I know I like the flexibility of hooking up my K2/100 to my Commander HF 2500. I am then able to use QRP or medium power or QRO as conditions dictate. But a big solid state amp would be very nice - - no more worries about tube replacement cost and availability. And no more tune-ups either just when that elusive DX station appears ready to QRT. Yes, Blasphemy in the eyes of the 'QRP only' folks, but consider that the K2 has grown in respect by leaps and bounds - at first it was considered a 'toy radio' by some, but it has become noticed by not only the QRP folks, but also by the QRO, contesting, and DX communities as a superb receiver coupled with a good transmitter. It just makes good business sense to expand the market to all potential customers. It is not necessary to buy the BIG AMP, the basic QRP K2 is still the same as before - each to his own, and Elecraft is managing to provide products that promise to appeal to all persuasions within Ham Radio. RE: [Elecraft] More rumors?
If the second version puts out a solid 1500 watts it would be a first for solid state amateur amps. I would be interested in it since it could do an easy 1 KW out with headroom to spare. I have a perfectly fine tube type amp but the cost and availability of many tube types is a source of increasing concern. It will be interesting to learn more as a release date comes closer. Eric told me that another version of the amp would also be available that doubles up on the finals which would put out a full 1500 watts. Availability will be later this year. I guess I'll sell it to partially fund the new Elecraft amp. I assume it will be a kit. Is a matching antenna tuner in the works? What was the price associated with the 800 watt linear? I am sure I cannot afford it, just curious ;) Kevin. KD5ONS It's not a rumor. Re: [Elecraft] More rumors?
the story as of last saturday morning ;-) was that the amp may include 6m (yay!) and that the 1500W unit will come out after the 800W is on the market. (6m would be derated, however, because 6m is about at the limit of what the finals can do.) The 800W version has the switching power supply built in; the 1500W version has the supply in a separate box. The supply is Elecraft designed and extremely quiet (as you might expect). The amp is fully automatic (a la Alpha/ACOM), runs with any xceiver and has some cool SO2R features that Eric will surely elaborate on. It also weighs less than 16kg, ready to go! - jeff wk6i At 12:47 PM 4/21/2005, Earl W Cunningham wrote: >Elecraft unveiled their solid-state 800-watt all band (160-10) amp at the >DX convention in Visalia last weekend. Well, perhaps I should have kept my mouth shut and let Eric do the honors. On the other hand he didn't seem to be keeping it a very close secret at the booth. It has no vacuum tubes, don't know about SMD. It's a QRO amp that can be configured in a number of interesting ways and doesn't require the K2 to operate. A very quiet switching power supply.
