Re: [Elecraft] Signal source for KX3 temperature frequency calibration

2023-06-17 Thread Dave
For those considering using the excellent dual output Leo Bodnar GPSDO, be
aware that you cannot select certain combinations of output frequencies.

I have the dual output unit and it can be set for 10 MHz on one socket and
1 MHz on the other, which was ideal to drive my old Racal counter at 1 MHz
and a signal generator that needed 10 MHz. However, it is currently set at
49.152 to lock an Icom IC-9700 via their add-on board, but the other output
cannot be set at the same time to give 10 MHz for my K4D.

The limitation is related to the synthesiser chip used, no firmware update
will change that.

I have done the KX3 extended temp cal and it works really well in hot
temperatures. For the cal you really do need a very stable source, such as
a Leo Bodnar unit.

Incidentally, the K4 is stable enough for all except the most critical of
users… I have other 10 MHz references but don’t both to connect them to my
K4.

Re: [Elecraft] Signal source for KX3 temperature frequency calibration

2023-06-14 Thread Wes
Indeed.  I have one of each.  Two of the Minis is probably a viable alternative
unless you want two locked signals with a prescribed phase difference.  Of
course then you need a splitter on the GPS antenna and two USB ports.  One
problem with these is that they're TCXOs, not OCXOs.  They can take some time to
establish good lock.

The Leo Bodnar two-channel GPSDO should give you both frequencies, although
setting them is really clunky.  The promised revised software never materialized.

It’s true that both rigs *can* use a 10MHz reference, but the far better way to

Why not just split the signal to both radios since both use a 10MHz
reference?
Or are they very far apart?

The TinySA ultra has many uses in the ham shack.

It has a nice frequency generator function including AM/FM modulation plus some
nice spectrum analyzer features only found on much more expensive devices.

I haven't tried it, but I have heard that GPSDO with a 10 MHz square
wave output should work as the harmonic at 50 MHz is strong enough.
