Re: [Elecraft] This does not bode well for the chip users of the world

2021-04-30 Thread SteveL
Great laugh out of this, thank you!
And so true… JIT depends on so many things working, which are not now for
myriads of reasons.

I could barely wrap my brain around 20,000 containers on a single boat, wedged
across the Suez no less - and blocking how many more?! In some ways it reveals
how strategic some mundane things are - like shipping containers or a boat - in
the economy of the world. Kind of scary, really.

It highlights both the magic and the simplicity of HF radio we use: a K1 or
KX1 or Tuna Tin II..., a battery, a switch, and a wire in a local tree and
we’re on the air around the world. To hear a signal reach me directly from
half way around the world is truly magic.

2021-04-29 Thread Christopher Hoover
This has been a problem on and off for at least five years.

It is somewhat worse now than it has been recently, but it is more of the
same.

I had to design out the uC on Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 (EE2) in
2018 the week before we were supposed to gerber out for our proto build.
I found 1000 pieces of a suitable alternative *in stock* at Digikey that I
immediately bought on my credit card that would carry us through proto and
EVT, and our GSM simultaneously secured an allocation from the supplier
for what we needed production.

Re: [Elecraft] This does not bode well for the chip users of the world

2021-04-29 Thread Paul GACEK via Elecraft
Staring out at the LA seashore, I see scads of ships waiting to offload in
numbers I’ve never seen before. Whatever the legitimate reason for that
bottleneck, it must compound the delay of possibly scarce items including
commodity ICs.

I think we only have one silicon foundry stateside in AZ and I think run by
Intel. A stunning amount of critical chips are made in Taiwan which seems to be
the object of desire for a neighbor to its right.

While government involvement through policy or incentives is a spirited topic
to discuss, I think the EU has invested a lot more money in trying to have more
foundries than we have. Leaving things to market forces has unintended
consequences.

I can now finally justify my unbuilt Elecraft kit collection under the guise of
anticipating a global shortage.

So sorry, but this pandemic and all the supply issues fit nicely into an
economic war, not just a firearms war. The economic war has only just begun
which I had guessed would happen just after the Japanese, then the S. Koreans
now the Chinese. This is a cultural war destined to get the US into their

I hope the chips and high tech will move back to US like the good old days.
Too bad for our US companies to be too slow to react, or the government taxes
and labor practices to remove our own manufacturing. If we had chips here,
Elecraft, maybe others, perhaps could get parts?

It isn't just IC's. I placed a $250-ish order from Mouser two days ago.
Most of the items are common components, with a BO lead-time into September.
We live in a different world, at least temporarily if not for a long haul?

Welcome to the world of "just in time" inventory meets off shore
production.  Then couple that with a Chinese Communist Party that
makes sure that Chinese companies get their orders filled before
the rest of the world.  Then don't forget that there are not enough
shipping containers to accommodate all the freight demands.

International commerce is reaping the rewards of concentrating
manufacturing in China while stripping the US & Canada (and to a
lesser extent, Europe) of much of their manufacturing base.

It's not just chips but pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics and
even consumer staples.  The trend will only get worse if the current
administration has its way and increases taxes on business and capital
by 50%.

And that is what happening, don't blame Communist China, No Far East

local troops scouting project - none around, glad we don't need them till

For smaller customers that are not buying millions of parts at a time, it
is even worse, as they have no leverage. That includes the company I am
working for and I would assume companies like Elecraft. Even for simple
orders from distributors of in stock parts they are taking a week to ship
rather than the usual next day shipment. It is really disruptive.
