2004-07-16 Thread Dale Boresz

Favorite amateur radio band: 20m (cw)
Reasons:
- An effective antenna, even a directional one, does not need to be
prohibitively large or heavy. (my Hex Beam weighs about 7 pounds, and
has a turning radius of a little over 9 feet). Have also had success w/
vertical dipoles, and ground planes.

- Lots of propagation surprises, even when condx. are less than optimal
- Overall band noise is quite low (compared to the lower bands such as
30m, 40m, and 80m)

- The band is generally open to both dx and stateside simultaneously
- Wide range of skill levels of cw op's keeps things interesting
- Reasonably active band, and pretty easy to stir up an interesting qso
- A decent bit of QRP activity

30m band is a fun band as well, but (at least at this qth) lots of
strange non-ham radio signals chewing up major segments of the band
during the evening hours. But a simple antenna such as a sloper or
dipole, can work very well on this band.

Love 40 meters! Always open to somewhere from East Central Indiana. It's
fun to listen to 40 meters after local sundown and hear the states west of
the Mississippi start rolling in. After 0300 the entire western US is
reachable on a few watts.

I enjoy 20 meters because I never know where it will be open tocould be
EU, could be KS, could be anywhere. I hang out around the FISTS calling
freq of 14058 kHz. Always someone there to QSO with.

I visited Trev's (K6ESE) website and looked at some of the items he
purchased from "The Radio Room." Gosh, I hope that one day 40 years from
now I will be such a QRP legend that they manufacture coffee mugs, lunch
boxes and t-shirts with my picture on them (ASHTABULA BILL).

Let's see:

Iron Maiden - #1 Favorite ;-)
Eric Johnson
Fates Warning - John Arch stuff
Queensryche
Dream Theatre
Steve Vai
SRV
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Joe Satriani
Spastic Inc - Ron Jarzombek
Yngwie Malmsteen
Frank Zappa

Seriously though, for general QSOing, it's hard to beat 40 Meters. There's
always someone willing to QSO. 10 Meters is a hoot when it's open, but
that's not too often these days. 80 Meters is great for local nets (No room
for a DX antenna on 80 here ;-) I use 20 meters a lot these days. Used to
get on 15 a lot also, but even when it's open it seems to lack activity.
Both 20 and 15 have been good for DX during contests recently. Nao JA6PA
used to be regularly heard and QSOd with on 15 around the QRP calling
frequency, but I haven't heard him lately. Japan is pretty easy to work on
15 when the band is open from CA. I worked Nao several times on 15 from the
YL's condo in Long Beach with a K1 and MP-1 antenna. I'd have to say that 40
and 20 are the bands that get the most attention here these days as they
seem to contain the most activity. 20 has been a real DX provider late into
the evening lately (not this week with all the solar activity though) to
Asia, VK and ZL land. I still check 10 and 15 for openings when I'm here,
but rarely hear anything unless there's a contest going. As far as the WARC
bands go, I guess I should check them out more, esp 30 Meters, but for some
reason I stick to the bands I'm used to...I did try out 30 Meters for a
while in the early evenings, but had very little luck with it. Maybe if
there's a contest going that I don't want to participate in, and I'm itchin'
for some CW, I'll give 30 another shot...

Without question, Count Basie, especially the one with Lester Young. In second
place is the mid-50's Kenton band.

I like 30m. It's a nice cross between 40m and 20m. Quite often on 30m,
simply calling CQ will lead to a DX contact. Once, after finishing a
domestic QSO, I was called by three Europeans one right after another. The
first was a Hungarian, the second an Italian, and the third from the Czech
Republic.
