We provide these kernels for hardware testing in an effort to identify
new/updated drivers which can then be targeted for backporting as kmod
packages. Meanwhile, these kernels may provide interim relief to
people with non-functional hardware. We stress that we consider such
kernels as a last resort for those who are unable to get their
hardware working using the RHEL kernel with supplementary kmod
packages.

These packages are provided "As-Is" with no implied warranty or
support. Using the kernel-lt may expose your system to security,
performance and/or data corruption issues. Since timely updates may
not be available from the ELRepo Project, the end user has the
ultimate responsibility for deciding whether to continue using the
kernel-lt packages in regular service.

The packages are intentionally named kernel-lt so as not to conflict
with the RHEL kernels and, as such, they may be installed and updated
alongside the regular kernel. The kernel configuration is based upon a
default RHEL configuration with added functionality enabled as
appropriate.

If a bug is found when using these kernels, the end user is encouraged
to report it upstream to the Linux Kernel Bug Tracker [1] and, for our
reference, to the ELRepo bug tracker [2]. By taking such action, the
reporter will be assisting the kernel developers, Red Hat and the Open
Source Community as a whole.

Thank you,

The ELRepo Team.

No, you're not missing anything. In a nutshell, Red Hat have
backported more code from the linux-3.X.Y kernel sources into their
2.6.32-Z.el6.$arch kernel.

Please try with this explicit nosrc.rpm file --

http://elrepo.org/linux/testing/el6/SRPMS/wl-kmod-6_30_223_141-2.el6.elrepo.nosrc.rpm

and let me know the outcome.

By taking such action, the
reporter will be assisting the kernel developers, Red Hat and the Open

and EL6 elrepo repositories:

http://elrepo.org/tiki/kmod-r8192cu

We would like to thank Fabian Arrotin for maintaining these packages.

This package provides an updated r8192cu driver, version 4.0.2_9000-1

It is built to depend upon the specific ABI provided by a range of
releases of the same variant of the Linux kernel and not on any one
specific build.

The following files are currently syncing to the mirrors:

You may update your system by:

yum --disablerepo=\* --enablerepo=elrepo update kmod-r8192cu

Once the package has been installed, remember to unload the existing
driver before loading the updated version into the kernel:

/sbin/ifdown ethN
/sbin/modprobe -r r8192cu
/sbin/modprobe r8192cu
/sbin/ifup ethN

Hello Alex,

At a quick glance, it seems that your proposed configuration
adjustment is perfectly feasible.

Just one query. Do you actually make use of the relevant DEBUGFS ? It
is our normal procedure not to enable DEBUGFS throughout the
configuration, so as to minimise the physical size of the kernel.

On your behalf, I have opened an RFE in the bugtracker [1].

All being well, this configuration adjustment will be implemented with
the next update to the kernel-lt package.

Alan.

Thanks, Alex. I'll ensure that those configuration changes are

Hello Alex,

The firmware and documentation packages are only build for the
"noarch" target. The command line that you require is:

rpmbuild -bb --target noarch --without doc kernel-lt-3.10.spec

We provide these kernels for hardware testing in an effort to identify

packages. Meanwhile, these kernels may provide interim relief to
people with non-functional hardware. We stress that we consider such
kernels as a last resort for those who are unable to get their
hardware working using the RHEL kernel with supplementary kmod
packages.

These packages are provided "As-Is" with no implied warranty or

performance and/or data corruption issues.

For the distro kernel, kernel-lt and kernel-ml, respectively, what
does cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor return?

Highly unlikely and probably an invalid assumption!

I'll suggest that you take the configuration file for the distro
kernel, kernel-lt & kernel-ml and perform the following transformation
--

grep -v '^#' config-* | sort | uniq > sorted-config

Then perform a "sdiff" of each pair of sorted-config files.

If you discover an apparent defect in the configuration of either the
kernel-lt or kernel-ml packages, then please open an RFE at the ELRepo
bug tracker [1] and I will take it from there.

[elrepo] Kernel-ml and the Userland ACPI Daemon

2014-01-23 Thread Alan Bartlett
Early last December, 2013, a report [1] was made in our bug-tracker
which showed that breakage occurs in the userland acpid-1 process when
any kernel-ml package >= 3.12 was in use. A corresponding report [2]
was also made, upstream, in the kernel.org bug-tracker.

As a consequence, any system which made use of our kernel-ml package
suffered from a non-functioning acpi sub-system.

We are pleased to announce that Johnny Hughes, of the CentOS Project,
has built an acpid-2 package (64-bit only) and it is now available
from the CentOS Project's Xen4 packages repository. [3]

Installation of that acpid-2 package provides a fully-functioning acpi
sub-system for our kernel-ml package, as well as our kernel-lt
package. From our limited testing, it also appears that the acpid-2
package will support the distributed RHEL 6.5 kernel.

Thank you Johnny!

[elrepo] Announcement: EL6 Updated kernel-lt Release [3.10.28-1]

2014-01-26 Thread Alan Bartlett
Announcing the release of the kernel-lt-3.10.28-1.el6.elrepo packages
into the EL6 elrepo-kernel repository:

Look up the Vendor:Device ID pairing (the "fingerprint") for the
problematical NIC. Just execute --

lspci -nn | grep -i net

Now search for the pairing on the DeviceIDs page [1]. If you obtain a
match, then the relevant kmod package will be shown.

We provide these kernels for hardware testing in an effort to identify
new/updated drivers which can then be targeted for backporting as kmod
packages. Meanwhile, these kernels may provide interim relief to
people with non-functional hardware. We stress that we consider such
kernels as a last resort for those who are unable to get their
hardware working using the RHEL kernel with supplementary kmod
packages.

These packages are provided "As-Is" with no implied warranty or
support. Using the kernel-ml may expose your system to security,
performance and/or data corruption issues. Since timely updates may
not be available from the ELRepo Project, the end user has the
ultimate responsibility for deciding whether to continue using the
kernel-ml packages in regular service.

The packages are intentionally named kernel-ml so as not to conflict
with the RHEL kernels and, as such, they may be installed and updated
alongside the regular kernel.

That configuration change (CONFIG_CIFS_SMB2=y) has been committed and
will be present in the next release of both kernel-lt and kernel-ml

Checking in the kernel sources (the drivers/bluetooth/ath3k.c file) I
find that error message originates from the ath3k_load_patch()
function and that, in turn, is called from the ath3k_probe() function.

In reviewing the code I also see references to the required firmware
file, ath3k-1.fw

A quick check of the ath3k.ko module confirms that requirement --

[code]
[Duo2 ~]$ modinfo -F firmware
/lib/modules/3.14.0-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64/kernel/drivers/bluetooth/ath3k.ko
ath3k-1.fw
[Duo2 ~]$
[/code]

So, as a first step, I would recommend that you download the
ath3k-1.fw file from
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/
and copy it to your /lib/firmware/ directory and then re-test.

Please see if there is any change in the messages, then displayed.

Excellent news. Many thanks for sharing the details of the steps that
you have taken.

The issue of firmware images for EL6 is a little bit "messy" and gets
rather complicated when attempting to provide the ELRepo Project's
kernel-{lt|ml}-firmware packages. As I am sure you have seen, we
recommend using the distro firmware package for normal use. If there
is a deficiency in the kernel-firmware package when using it with
kernel-{lt|ml}, then we would normally recommend manually copying the
required files into the target system's /lib/firmware/ directory
structure.

In this case, both the messages output and the module's source code
were not particularly helpful . . .

Now that you know the files required, it would be a straightforward
RPM packaging task to create your own local package to provide those
files. But is it actually worth the effort?

Hi Dan,

You're welcome.

However please be aware that I just threw those suggestions together
after a minimalistic consideration of the problem. I suspect that one
should use "--prefix=/usr" on the "./configure" command line, etc.

When time permits (and I feel sufficiently motivated) I'll give this
another look. In the meantime, if there is anyone who feels up to the
challenge to package and maintain an ipset-utils package for use with
kernel-lt on EL5, then please make yourself known.

I'd suggest that you consider using xrandr.

Look to see what interfaces it recognises, by default. Plug in the
external monitor and use xrandr to activate the interface.

For example, with my Dell Latitude E5500 I see the following --

[Duo2 ~]$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y

I am not going to try to understand the mysteries of your Xorg logs
because, basically, I am unhappy with the current behaviour of the
Intel i915 driver [1] with your graphics controller, which is --

[quote]
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation
Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0a16] (rev 0b)
[/quote]

In a reply to your upstream bug report [2] it has been recommended
that the latest drm-intel-fixes-2014-04-11 [3] be used. Accordingly, I
have created a patch from that snapshot tarball and am currently
building a kernel-ml-3.14.0-2.drm_intel_fixes_2014_04_11.el6.elrepo
package set for you to test.

Sorry but kernel-lt-3.2.57-1.el5.elrepo is just a standard kernel
package and not a debug kernel package. The ELRepo Project does not
build any kernel-{lt|ml}-debug packages.

To use the CentOS/RHEL analogy, the standard kernel package is
kernel-2.6.18-371.6.1.el5 and the debug kernel package is
kernel-debug-2.6.18-371.6.1.el5 Notice the difference in the package
names?

[elrepo] Announcement: EL7 Updated kmod-r8168 Release [8.038.00-1]

2014-06-12 Thread Alan Bartlett
Announcing the release of updated kmod-r8168 package into the EL7
elrepo repository:

http://elrepo.org/tiki/kmod-r8168

This package provides an updated r8168 driver, version 8.038.00

It is built to depend upon the specific ABI provided by a range of
releases of the same variant of the Linux kernel and not on any one
specific build.

The following files are currently syncing to the mirrors:

x86_64
kmod-r8168-8.038.00-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64.rpm

src
r8168-kmod-8.038.00-1.el7.elrepo.src.rpm

You may update your system by:

yum --disablerepo=\* --enablerepo=elrepo update kmod-r8168

Once the package has been installed, remember to unload the existing
driver before loading the updated version into the kernel:

/sbin/ifdown ethN
/sbin/modprobe -r r8168
