[Emc-developers] curiosity is killing the cat

2021-06-04 Thread Gene Heskett
So the question re master for armhf is in 3 parts:

1: Are you about to switch to building against gtk3?

2: How long till python2 support will be turned off?

3: Is there anything I can do with my build scripts or my config to
hasten those dates with my feedback?

Cheers, Gene Heskett

yes, very soon, but I have not decided on a date. few issues are still
being worked on.

2: How long till python2 support will be turned off?

at the same time.

3: Is there anything I can do with my build scripts or my config to

check out master-gtk3 branch, and test all your configs.

I will start with whats about tied for my most complex machine, the 6040
mill, currently without a 4th axis that works. In that case I'm
assuming a change in the /etc/apt/sources.d/linuxcnc.list from "master"
to "master-gtk3", then fix any dependencies if I can? Part of my pyvcp
gui stuff for the mister control is missfiring recently but the machine
is running normally otherwise.

I'll check for a misswire in pyvcp before I switch to master-gtk3 though.
The 4th axis, currently commented out, is midst a conversion from a way
too fast and not enough hold belt drive, to a smaller harmonic drive I
have yet to make, my ender-5 plus is awaiting parts to make a new bowden
tube. One of the shark fittings failed to hold & froze it all up.

Thank you Rene.

That machine won't fly unless the buildbot is building it. Its currently
on master-rtpreempt. In which case I need the exact buildbot address,
or, transplant my makeit scripts from the rpi4, which ought to work but
hasn't been tested. Your choice.

Thanks Rene.

nativecam does not work with python3, so all configs with ncam will need some
work. But that's a different story I think.

BTW master-gtk3 builds and runs fine on devuan chimaera, including the HTML
documentation.

It should be easy to port, but afaik currently unmaintained. If somebody
starts, I'm willing to help.

buildbot is building it and packaging works, but I dont think non-master
branches are uploaded anywhere.

but you can build packages on an other machine.

[Emc-developers] GWiz Wizard

I noticed that the GWiz Wizard has not been touched for 12 years and
seems to be unfinished. Should we depreciate that from master and remove

Probably. I think it was a good idea, but failed to gain traction.

Who was the original developer? Are they still active to give an opinion?

I was interesting in this as an extension to LinuxCNC. I
converted one of my personal "wizards"
to python a long time ago to see how difficult it was.
Recently, I published source code for ALL my wizards on my
web site. These are all in c, and generate g-code
compatible with LinuxCNC.

(See http://pico-systems.com/gcode.html for the links.)
If somebody wanted to convert these to GWiz, or straight
Python, please be my guest.

I use these programs very often to generate my G-code for
machining panels.
Probably, others have similar programs that could
collectively make up a pretty good set of wizards.

John

That sounds like a project I should rope my son into. Part of his
Physics degree at Uni is C & Python, probably his Mechatronics degree as
well. 'Bout time to get him doing something useful, other than computing
primes.
