Transient/Surge/Lightning Standards for DC power equipment

1998-12-08 Thread salbanna
Hello group,

I was wondering if there is a specific standard written for testing DC
powered equipment powered from a centralized DC power source ( Rectifier,
battery ,etc. and also if there is a specific standard that is written for
Antenna cables that carries RF signal from outdoor units to Indoor ones.
The closest thing I got across is the ANSI C62.41 (IEEE 587 formally), IEC
1000-4-5.

class x + class x = class x

1998-12-08 Thread Mona Akerblom
Hi there EMC/PSTC folk:

There's been a number of discussions here about the validity of "Class
X + Class X = Class X" in the various FCC and CISPR EMC requirements.

Bypassing the whole "is it appropriate" question, where exactly is it
written that this is acceptable? Is it written in the standards
themselves?

I'm mostly involved in working with our system HW design to make sure it
passes, and haven't gotten much involved at all in the reading and
interpretation of the actual standards, or interfacing with the
agencies, i leave that to our Regulatory Affairs group. As such, I
haven't personally read the standards myself (yet!), so pardon the
basic-ness of my question ;-). Unfortunately, I'm starting to need to
know this sort of thing, and need to start arming myself with standards
and supporting documents.

if someone could point me to the appropriate document (if not written in
the actual standard), or section of the standards so i can look this up,
i'd be greatly appreciative. I'm mostly only interested in CISPR 11A
(EN5011A), but wouldn't mind pointers for FCC Class A as well.

Thanks so much in advance,
Mona Akerblom

Details
---
On December 8, the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the IEEE EMC Society will
hear a presentation by Neven Pischl of Bay Networks on "A New Common-Mode
Voltage Probe for Predicting EMI from Unshielded Differential-Pair
Cables".

Common-mode (CM) currents on I/O cables are primary sources of EMI
in many electronic devices. Measuring the CM voltage at the I/O connectors
can be an alternative to measuring CM currents. Sources of CM currents
and voltages are discussed, and a CM voltage probe for prediction of
the EMI levels from unshielded differential twisted-pair cables is described.
CM voltages at the RJ-45 ports were measured and correlated to the 10m E-field
levels of 8 DUTs. A CM-voltage level that corresponds to the EN 55022 A limit
has been derived. This allows the prediction of radiated emissions based on
CM voltage measurements at the connectors. This bench-tool can be instrumental
in reducing the time and cost of troubleshooting EMI problems.

Re: 1000Base-T (IEEE 802.3ab) vs. EMI on UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pairs)

1998-12-08 Thread Douglas McKean
I'll concur with Don, but as discussed at the IEEE 802.3z Gigabit
Ethernet Task Force meeting in Irvine, California on March 10-14,
1997, this was apparently briefly discussed.

The full text is at
http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/z/public/minutes/Irv0397.txt

I quote only the important part ...

"Cable shielding was discussed and it was explained that two shields are
required to meet radiated emissions requirements. This configuration
 easily passes "Class B"."

At another site,
http://www.anixter.com/techlib/vendor/cabling/lan1000.htm

it is "suggested/hinted/implied" that compliance either for emissions
and/or especially with balance on UTPs, the burden of compliance rests
not on thy humble standard when considering all possible applications.
Compliance rests with thee.

Signal Line Output Surge Protection

1998-12-08 Thread UMBDENSTOCK, DON
One of our products required surge protection on a transmit output line to
comply with a UL requirement. The designer chose an MOV across the
differential output. When we performed a radiated emissions measurement, we
found the previously compliant design to be "screaming" (~ 15 dB over the
limit). Removing the MOV resolved the EMC problem, but then we have the UL
problem.

The protection we were looking for was 120 V clamp, capable of handling a 3
joule test with a peak voltage of 2400 V applied.

Just curious, has anyone had a similar situation? A particular supplier
indicated that others had reported MOVs to be disastrous from an EMC
perspective. MOVs appear to be a device with a general rule of thumb "don't
use on 'signal' lines". Any experiences you would like to share? What was
your solution?

Don Umbdenstock

Re: Directives

1998-12-08 Thread Rob Stirling
Stewart, here are copies of the LVD and EMC Directives that I picked up
off of the web somewhere (??). The copyright notice at the beginning
does state that they are distributable, courtesy of Mr. Nick Rouse,
provided that they are not modified (please read). I think that some
'Informative Annexes' with lists of 'EN' standards, the names and EEC
agencies and the odd illustration are missing, but the text is more or
less complete.

Could you please post the EMC Directive Guidelines you mentioned (if
complete) or where I might find them??

Note that these Directives essentially only say that "thou shalt produce
a safe product that does not cause nor is it or is susceptible to
electromagnetic interference". You must apply product specific and/or
generic standards to show that you are appropriately compliant, and
declare conformity to those as well. For example, the ITE Safety
Standard, EN60950 (if appropriate), and the Generic Emissions and
Immunity Standards EN50081-1 and 2 and EN50082-1 and 2. These (-the
latter), in turn call up Emissions and Immunity TEST Standards, such as
EN50011, 22 and the EN61000-4-x Series, respectively, which tell you
exactly what tests you need to do. Simple, right?

In Compliance Assessment Seminars I hold for local Industry, I present
this as a pyramid, with the Directives at the tip, and the actual test
standards at the (very wide) base.

Sorry for the extra ramblings, but I hope this helps!!

EN55022 Level determination

1998-12-08 Thread Ken Stoorza
I have attempted to post to the "virtual conference hall" a few times and
nothing seems to be happening. So I figured I would try emailing emc-pstc
directly. If several, similar messages should appear, I apologize in advance.

Our Company has been shipping a terminal product (office equipment) into the EU
for years. This product is compliant with CISPR22 level "B". Prior to my
involvement (or, for that matter, any of the current regulatory staff), the
decision was made to ship "B" product to avoid the need for VDE witness testing
as well as the mail in card for our German customers.

We understand that the need for the card and witness testing when qualifying
product to level "A" has passed. However, since we have no recent understanding
of level "A" (and a need to ship level "A" product), we looked at the relevant
documentation and asked around.

In the USA, it's pretty straightforward: home = B; office/industrial = A. We
did not see such a clear distinction regarding the European Union. Matter of
fact, one of our trusted consultants insists that we cannot ship level "A"
equipment of this type into the EU. Another source says it's ok as long as the
user's manual has a statement which says, in effect: "This is a level A
product and may interfere...if it does, take measures to correct it".

Opinions from this forum are most appreciated.

Happy Holidays

I have some experience getting 100Base-T systems to pass class B, and
it wasn't easy. I think that 1000Base-T will be difficult to get to
pass on a real board where there are other high speed devices and
limited space.

Bill,
Check out www.conformance.co.uk. I believe there are some downloadable
symbols there. I would suggest that the CE mark is placed on the sub
assemblies, components are outside the directive, and all packaging.

Chris, Darrell, Folks,

I'm still a proponent of a copper plane. Here in Illinois USA, Aluminium tends
to corrode over time making bonds questionable. Copper has not done that where
I've used it.

CE Mark image location

1998-12-08 Thread Lfresearch
Bill,

you may want to go to the following URL

http://www.conformance.co.uk/CE_MARKING/CELOGO/ce_logo.html

It has the CE mark in many formats. I advise clients to put the CE mark on
each product that makes up a system.

Try

http://www.conformance.co.uk/CE_MARKING/CELOGO/ce_logo.html.

where you'll find the logo in a dozen or so different formats. I'd be
interested to know if it helps you out.

Nick.

Directives

1998-12-08 Thread Stewart, Judd
Hello Everyone...!

I have a couple of questions concerning the EU and directives and how they
apply to ITE .

1) I have in my hands guidelines on the application of Council
Directive 89/336/EEC. I retrieved it from the Europa server but have been
unable to find other such documents, LVD for example. Does anyone know the
proper technique to search for the main text of the directives (not the
amendments, I have found a zillion of those).

2) Can anyone shed some light on which directives (Safety, EMC, etc.)
would apply to automobile mounted ITE.

Any help is most appreciated

...Happy Holidays...
