RE: Sound measurement

James,
What is the product that you are interested in? There are quite a few
standards that deal with product noise measurements, not all use the
same measurement distance. Many use sound power, which is independent
of distance.

I'm not aware of any specific training on IEC61508. This standard,
Functional Safety: Safety Related Systems, is usually covered by courses
on Safety Critical Software. The University of Queensland is one
organisation that conducts these in Australia.

I'm sure there must be similar courses in the US. One word of warning is
that only parts 1, 3, 4 and 5 have been published; parts 2, 6 and 7 are
expected to be formalised later this year. The Standards Australia
IT/15-15 committee is currently working on a local guideline for the
application if IEC61508.

I hope this helps...

 James,

I believe the standard you want is ISO 7779 "Measurement of airborne noise
emitted by computer and business equipment". In a past life I had to use this
standard and in it are specific measurement criteria. Some criteria from
memory
are number and placement of microphones, construction of measurment area, etc.

 I hope this helps.

RE: Enclosure ratings IP vs. NEMA

1999-04-08 Thread Werlwas, Mark
I don't think that you can easily convert IP to NEMA codes. However, there
is a nice little chart which converts NEMA to IP. You can locate it at
http://www.ul.com/hazloc/ref/conversion.htm

The standard which defines the NEMA codes is NEMA-250,1997.

RE: Cost associated with Australian C-tick

1999-04-08 Thread John Juhasz
I would like to add an item to this.

If the US test house that you used for CE EMC testing is accredited by the
ACA (as the test house I use is), they can also issue an 'Australian Test
House' Certificate based on the EN55022 testing, attesting to the fact that
the product also meets AS/NZS 3548.

The ACA doesn't need to see the test report in the compliance folder
provided an
Australian Test House certificate is in there (they prefer the certificate,
but I send both to my Australian based agent anyway).

closely related that any Product Safety Knowledge comes in handy for EMC
Engineers. Charlie's presentation will discuss mandatory Safety
certifications, the European Union and CE Marks, the North American Bi
National Standard for ITE Equipment (another Y2K problem). Principles of
Safety will be discussed as they relate specifically to EMC. In addition,
he will discuss the CB scheme, and future and present requirements for
other countries for ITE, Telecom, Medical, and Test/Measurement Equipment.

About the Speaker: (Charles M. Bayhi, P.E.)

Charlie Bayhi is a Product Safety Forensic and Consulting Engineer and has
been involved in Product Safety on a worldwide basis for more than 30
years.
He is President and Principal Consultant of CPSM Corporation, and provides
product safety design guidance, development of Product Safety Programs,
safety certification of products, forensic analysis of accidents and
fires, and technical advisory for development of products and safety

RE: Cost associated with Australian C-tick

1999-04-08 Thread WOODS, RICHARD
Richard, there should be only a one time cost, if any, and that involves the
application to use the c-tick mark. Only one application is required for all
of your ITE. That application must be submitted by a person located in
Australia, and that person may be an employee or an empowered
representative. Testing for ITE may be performed by any laboratory in any
country; however, the government has the right to reject test data that is
not from a certified lab. The test data does not need to be submitted unless
it is requested.

My company is currently using our CE test data that we have taken ourselves
and we have had no problems. If you are using distributors, be prepared to
supply them with the information. We have had several requests from our
distributors.

Can anyone tell me the APPROXIMATE cost (just need the right number
of
zeros) if any, in US Dollars, for obtaining the C-Tick mark under
the
auspices of their EMC Framework? This would include one time or
recurring
costs. This would be for ITE equipment.
The relevant Australian emissions standard is apparently AS/NZS
3548. At the
present time all of our products are verified for European Union
conformity
to the fully equivalent EN55022:1994+A1:1995+A2:1997. So, in
theory, it
should just be a paper work exercise. I am just trying to find out
what the
costs are associated with that exercise. Also, can we as a US based
manufacturer submit our application directly to SMA or do we need an
intermediary or an in country representative?
If anyone in the Australian SMA is on this distribution, I'd be
ecstatic to
hear from you
TIA.

RE: ESD-Pink Poly Bags

1999-04-08 Thread Raymond . Li

Hi folks,

What about the blue poly bags which used to contain the electronic
components? Is it the same type of pink poly bag?

John,
You are correct. The pink bags have been treated to be hygroscopic, so that
they will retain some moisture. The pink color is a dye used to identify
the
treated bags. The main advantage is that the bags do not generated static
when the board is withdrawn from inside. You should be aware, however, that
several years back some vendors were selling pink bags without the
anti-static treatment. Some of these may still be around.

For actual protection the bag must act as a Faraday cage. Thus the foil or
metallized lining. The older (black) carbon loaded bags do provide some
limited protection.

Re: Cost associated with Australian C-tick

1999-04-08 Thread Barry Esmore
Hello Richard,

Answers to your questions:
- The "APPROXIMATE" cost to register with the ACA (no longer SMA) is
$zero.
- If you have reports to EN55022 it is only a paper work exercise.
- You will need an Australian company to sign the DOC and hold the
compliance folder.

Hope this helps.

Issues in Spread Spectrum Testing.

1999-04-08 Thread protocol-labs
Greetings!!

I'm looking for advice and any experience from the group regarding
spread spectrum testing.

I'm applying RSS-210 for Canadian requirements (License exempt RF
Devices...), and looking at the 900-928 and 2400-2483 MHz S.S. bands for
Direct Sequencing systems.

A couple of the things that seem a little odd in making these
measurements are (directly quoting the standard):

> 6.2.2.b.2
> The processing gain (PG) shall be at least 10 dB. This may be determined
> from any suitable method including from the jamming margin (JM) as follows:
> PG = JM + S/N + L , where S/N is the signal to noise ratio at the

> margin
> of a receiver is the minimum carrier-to-interference ratio
> (interference to be a single frequency) to meet a specified bit error
> ratio at the output of the receiver. The test report shall indicate how the
> processing gain is determined.

Have you ever tried this, and will a simple unmodulated variable
amplitude signal sent from a directly connected (through a splitter??)
Signal Generator/Amp work for the interference signal. If not, how would
the interference signal of a known amplitude be coupled into the
receiver. Any ideas on how else to obtain this measurement? Also, is
the system implementation loss simply the reflected power?

> 6.2.2.b.3
> The peak output power of the transmitter shall not exceed one watt. Any
> antenna gain in excess of 6 dBi (6 dB above isotropic gain) shall be added to
> the
> measured RF output power before using the power limits.

What is a suitable means to get an accurate antenna gain reading,
presumably for the transmitting bands only. Also, the one watt, peak
power, I assume is the total available power at the antenna jack, or
could it be the total forward power when connected to the antenna?

Thanks to anyone that can get back to me on this!

Best regards,

Rob.
