RE: SONET ESD performance
Hello Martin, Scott, In the for what its worth category, in a previous life I worked with Fibre Channel which also has an official error rate in the 10^-12 range. I don't recall which standard covers Fibre Channel but the error rate is familiar. What was interesting is the rational for the error rate. For Fibre Channel with a 1.0625 GB bit rate, 10^-12 bit errors per bit would amount to one error in approximately 15 minuites. It turns out that such an error rate is unacceptably high for Fibre Channel, and presumably for the OC-48 interface. The published limit was based on what could reasonably be tested as opposed to expected actual performance. A working Fibre Channel interface generally wont have even 1 error in 2 or 3 years of operation, but that's not trivial to measure. You'd need to another factor of 10^-5 for the three year test. For an OC-48 interface you may be working off a rate of around 10^-12 and it only takes a few weeks to test that !!, so the easiest and short answer is, no bit errors should be observed during the ESD testing for optical (read high speed) interfaces. Re: SONET ESD performance
Debatable in my experience which is not a lot. There's two totally different standards for errors. One's a bit error limit and the other is a time errored limit. An errored second can have any amount of errors during that second. It's not a bit error limit. It's a time errored limit. But can migrate ultimately into interpretations bit errored limits and of equipment availability which is THE bottom line with the customers. You will be left on your own devices explaining to your customers exactly what pass/fail criteria or interpretations you used for the test. I would suggest that your marketing people are the ones with the final responsibility for this interpretation or for what the customers are looking for with this testing. Chris, Your timing is excellent. The attached was just posted in the OJ today. EN 55022:1998 is officially put off (DoW) until 1 August 2003. Re: How Safe ???
While the US legal system is subject to a lot of frivolous lawsuits, product liablilty is often the only thing keeping companies on the straight and narrow. We have already seen lots of correspondence in this newsgroup about justifying agency approvals, the use of safety standards, or other costs of implementing safety practices. Some only understand the financial risk to a company or the criminal prosecution of intentional neglegence. An example of lack of legal responsibility and the problems it creates is currently showing up in the US about health maintenance organizations who refuse treatment on a variety of disputed grounds since they cannot be sued for their decisions. This lack of liability is a major issue in the current medical insurance legislation making its way through congress. Keep in mind that for many of us the liability risk rather than the moral imperative is what motivates our companies to employ us. Hopefully the legal decisions will primarily be judgements of reason and propriety rather than law and greed. Re: Oils for the 950 Hot Flaming Oil Test
If you are looking for a specification for the oil, the MSDS is not necessarily the appropriate place to look. The MSDS is for the purpose of defining toxicity and similar risks and is often the same for a range of materials. As we were writing the standards we found it difficult to come up with precise definitions of materials for both this and the label solvent test, since both are fractions taken off the distillation column at the refinery and are full of all kinds of hydrocarbons of different types, molecular weight being the predominant difference. As far as obtaining the oil, the traditional fuel used by UL dating back to UL 478 has been home heating oil. It turns out this is essentially the same as diesel oil used for transportation, the primary differences being that diesel oil receives more care to avoid water content (condensation), and some brands have additives for cleaning injectors. In the US, coloring additives are used to distinguish home heating oil from highway diesel oil to catch tax cheats (diesel oil has higher highway taxes, so don't get caught with red fuel in your truck). I use a diesel engine for home cogeneration (heat and electricity) and it makes no difference whether I use home heating oil or diesel oil. It should likewise make no difference in the flaming oil test. Bob Peter Merguerian wrote: Dear All, Does anyone have the MSDS for Kerosene # 1? This is the oil used by UL to conduct the Hot Flaming Oil Test in the UL60950/EN 60 950 ITE standards when the bottom openings do not comply with some of the bottom cfonstructions specified in the standard. I am also trying to determine other types of oils (and relevant MSDSs) which may be suitable for the test. PETER S. MERGUERIAN Technical Director I.T.L. Re: SONET ESD performance
Scott, The permissible errors relate back to your system specification (IRS) as it relates to BERs. For an OC-48 interface you may be working off a rate of around 10^-12 and it only takes a few weeks to test that !!, so the easiest and short answer is, no bit errors should be observed during the ESD testing for optical (read high speed) interfaces. The statement regarding 1 errored second per discharge is the default should your system spec fail to address bit errors (not likely). My 2c.
