Ferrite snap-on rfi suppression for cable in AM BCB

2008-08-12 Thread Ken Javor
Does anyone out there know of a product or material that could be clamped or
formed around an installed cable and be absorptive, not inductive, in the low
end of the AM BCB (around 500 - 800 kHz)?

Thank you,

RE: Ferrite snap-on rfi suppression for cable in AM BCB

2008-08-12 Thread Gert Gremmen
I do not think so.

Unless you are ready for huge volumes of ferrite.

Normal snap-on ferrites (large ones) are effective only

from 50 MHz off, and the effect may be improved at the cost of it’s
effectiveness in the 100’s of MHz range

by winding the cable 2 -3 times through the ferrite.

So I expect that you will need at least 100 time s the volume

of an ordinary ferrite clamp to get some effect.

And it will be partially inductive too….

A solution may be using a high mu ring ferrite of suitable dimensions as used
in transformers

and creating a secondary winding (current transformer) with a suitable

secondary circuit to absorb the frequencies you search to suppress.

( I was thinking of a parallel resonance LCR circuit)

Outside resonance the LC has a low impedance, so has the primary

When in resonance the R transforms to the primary with the ratio of the
windings squared.

Anyway, the effect is limited to the impedance the ferrite has without

secondary, and the transformed R may not suit your requirements.

2008-08-12 Thread Cortland Richmond
At work we bought some giant Ferrishield snap-on beads for 200$US each.
They'r e really only useful for troubleshooting and we got them because we
need to go over 5cm diameter cables. 5cm ID, and 115mm OD. VERY heavy. But
even with their size and weight, teh material provided would be ineffective at
the frequencies used in this application. How about SMPS cores? Or possibly
high end audio transformers?

Re: NEBS Compliant Components

2008-08-12 Thread Ted Eckert
There is so much involved in NEBS testing that it would be hard to qualify
individual components. A hard disk or power supply might pass the temperature
and vibration tests, but the final configuration will determine EMI
performance. The fire testing is impossible to do on most of these components
unless they are sealed in their own case.

The high cost of even limited NEBS testing would discourage most component
manufacturers from doing much of the work. I can't imagine somebody investing
the money for the testing unless they have a likely customer lined up.

Filters are one of the few exceptions. They can be tested to see if they will
contain a fire within the enclosure and they don't need to do much else.
(They may need to help provide part of the EMI screening, but that isn't too
difficult to analyze.) Because of their simplicity, little testing is
required. However, you need to find out what is covered by the NEBS
compliance of the filter. How has the vendor tested it?

Look closely at the chassis components; they need to contain a fire should it
occur. That is one of the nastier tests. Choose components with a minimum of
fuel for the fire. The method of assembling the components will determine a
lot of the vibration and EMI performance.

RE: NEBS Compliant Components

2008-08-12 Thread Brian O'Connell
Nothing I say represents the opinions or policy of my employer.

I very much concur with Mr Eckert. NEBS for 'components' is
seldom cost effective for anything other than very simple stuff,
and may not be representative of the component's performance in
the end-use installation.

My employer has had several requests for NEBS-certified power
supplies, but only one customer was willing to pay the lab cost.
In general, I know that that my power supplies will pass most (if
not all) NEBS, if properly installed, because of the way I
conduct EMC scans, safety Type Tests, and HALT. And there are
several other power supply and transformer mfrs that do the same
thing.

Then there was the customer that mounted a power supply with two
#2 screws (the mounting PEMs were for four #6 screws), then
proceeded to complain that the unit could not handle
shock/vibration tests. Stupidity should be very painful.

luck,
Brian

RE: Copies of CNS standards

2008-08-12 Thread Knighten, Jim L
Charles,

I found acquisition of CNS 13438 to be difficult. Couldn't find it on
the ANSI site. To purchase from cnsonline, you must purchase a HiTech
prepaid card and that was the difficult part for us. The web site was
difficult. We finally got our in-country rep. to get it for us. They
said the website was too difficult and they went down to the BSMI
office, purchased a paper copy, scanned it and sent it by e-mail.

Good luck.

For the ANSI webstore, did you look under Chinese GB ?
About 15 months ago I bought a Chinese std from ANSI - so do not
know what changed.

I just visited the cnsonline and bsmi.gov.tw sites and got a
multitude of 404 errors, and a 301 (moved).

Also, perhaps Grace Lin could advise, as she once wrote an
article on comparing this std to CISPR.

RE: Copies of CNS standards

2008-08-12 Thread Ted Eckert
The GB standards are for mainland China. The CNS standards are for Taiwan.
ANSI does not have many Taiwanese standards. BSMI is the best place to get
it, but their web site isn't working properly right now. (At least the
English section is not.) CE Magazine does have an old comparison between the
Taiwan standard and CISPR 22 that may help.

RE: NEBS Compliant Components

2008-08-12 Thread Peter Tarver
FWIW, some components that are sold specifically into the
telecom environment *could* have *some* of the testing done
on them, but such component manufacturers do little or
nothing toward 'certification.'  Some do more than others;
it's a tricky affair.

For some components, there's not a lot of value in
certification, per se, because much depends on the how
integration is accomplished. For other components,
especially protection components, a lot of pretesting is
done at the component level, but there are still no
guaranteees they will work in a given design, without
careful coordination.

For component manufacturers that are not specifically
targetting the telecom market, it's highly unlikely you'll
find satisfaction.

Beware the specter of 'designed to meet.'

RE: Another Cancer Scare?

2008-08-12 Thread Haynes, Tim (SELEX GALILEO, UK)
Hi all,

I have been on vacation but had planned to send this in - Some interesting
facts
(although some might argue with the numbers, they give a rough idea)

There are roughly 61 million people in the UK
One in 88 of these 61 million will die by this time next year.
There is a one in 300 chance of dieing in a vehicle related accident while
driving (in the lifetime) or roughly 0.5 million to one in any year over a 60
year driving lifetime.
There is a 1 in 1000 chance of being killed in any one year if you are a
deck-hand on a deep-sea trawler or a deep-sea diver.
There is less than 1 in 1 million chance of being killed at work if you are an
office worker.
There are more mobile phones in use in the UK than there are adults...
DIY in the UK accounts for 250,000 injuries and more than 70 deaths - ladder
accidents account for 50 of those 70+
Children's toys are involved in over 4 accidents per year (mainly by
tripping over them!)
In 2006/2007 there were 241 workplace deaths in the UK
Between 30 and 60 people are struck by lightning in the UK each year - of
these 3 may die.

Mobile phones are involved in accidents (with other contributory factors)
A man died trying to recover his mobile phone from a drain.
People have been killed using a mobile phone while driving or crossing the
road.
People have been murdered for their mobile phone.

There are zero confirmed cases of death caused by RF radiation from a mobile
phone since records (and mobile phones) began.

there is no contest - I will keep using the mobile phone but it is TOO RISKY
to go to work!

Regards
Tim
