South Africa and IEC version

2003-09-16 Thread Angus McGill

Greetings to everyone:

I'm in need of information about SABS enforcement for ITE computer
peripherals (USB, serial, PS/2), specifically for some older ITE products
already certified and imported in South Africa. SABS has recently upgraded
their national standard to follow IEC 60950-1:2001. At the present moment,
my client's distributors are being asked to provide evidence of 3rd
Edition approvals or certificates.

The products in question (tested and certified in year 2000 and later), and
are covered by a CB certificate listing IEC 60950:1991+A1+A2+A3+A4 2nd
Edition.

Without considering the EMC requirement, will 60950 2nd Edition up to A4 be
enough for a distributor to sell product already on the shelf in South
Africa? Is there some announcement or bulletin which states as much or
which spells out some different requirement?

Thanks in advance for your advice,
Angus McGill

BSMI approved printers

2003-07-29 Thread Angus McGill

Hi group:

I'm looking for HP printers to be part of our EMC host systems (ITE
emissions and immunity). One requirement is that the equipment have BSMI
approval, evidenced by a BSMI logo or number on the product label. Sales
people I have contacted at HP do not seem to have this information, there
seems to be no list of agency approvals on the website, and no time to drive
around to the shops and look at labels.

Can anyone point me to the right person at HP, or another source for this
information?

Azerbaijan bluetooth

2003-06-19 Thread Angus McGill

Hi group. A quick question:

Does anyone know what kind of certification or DOC is required for bluetooth
computer peripheral products in Azerbaijan? Though Azerbaijan is a former
CCCP member, I wonder if a GOST certificate is required for import or
operation there. The product in question bears the CE mark and is listed on
a DoC for Directive 1999/5/EC.

 Peter,

I presume that you replying here for product use
 in North America only?

Yes. UL1310 being a US standard with close ties to NFPA70,
Article 725 and a title of Class 2 Power Units (used to be
titled Direct Plug-In Transformer Units). Also, all
standards references were to UL standards, leaving the
distinct impression of a North American only query.
Admittedly, this is sometimes not the case.

The original question was about meeting LPS
 requirements in UL 60950 and
Angus McGill asked if having such a supply would
 help in obtaining UL
approval for the IT equipment (i.e. ITE).

I've already deleted the original posting, but I believe the
question was related to whether or not additional testing of
a Listed Class 2 Power Unit to LPS requirements would aid in
obtaining certification. If this was the question, the
answer is no. If the question was intended to go beyond
this, then, certainly, the issues you mention and many
others, still need review.

 Angus Doug -

Even though 1310 power supplies may only comply with Basic
Insulation (per UL60950), they have the bejeebers
 tested out
of them. UL1310 emphasizes testing over construction,
 whereas UL60950 emphasizes the contrary.

Since a UL1310 power supply must meet the requirements for
NEC Class 2 power sources, there is no need for any
additional testing to demonstrate compliance with LPS
requirements in UL60950. The LPS requirements are derived
from (though somewhat less stringent than) NEC Class 2
 requirements.

RE: best screw/washer choices for attaching PCB to Chassis?

2003-02-12 Thread Angus McGill

Has anyone tried square-cone sems screws for holding down PCBs? I am
tempted to recommend them, as I've seen them used in this type of
application, They have properties of flat and locking washers in a single,
captive washer (fewer parts to manage). They come in 4-40 phillips pan
head, with zinc or other platings.

The product I'm referring to used screws to fasten a two layer FR4
fiberglass/epoxy PWB to copper bars. I think it had a 5V output at about
50A. The memories are really foggy since this was about twenty years
ago,
but as I recall it used a couple screws with flat and split lock
washers.
Although properly torqued in initial manufacture, they started coming
back
from the field after a year or two with failures where the hardware had
loosened and the resulting loose connection would progress to heating
and
arcing with destruction of the board in the joint area. The smoke and
charring brought it to the attention of product safety, but failures
never
generated further risk due to enclosure protections.

We didn't do a lot of research as to how the failure progressed, just
reworked the product so that etch was securely soldered to the
connections
and did not depend on the screws. Board compression may have been due to
heat cycling or simply cold flow. However, the connection eventually
loosened and that was what we had to fix. I have often seen grounding
done
with board mounting screws and have recommended against it. Grounding
doesn't experience any heat cycling, nor does it usually experience
sustained currents which burn the connection, but if it loosens, it is
not
usually obvious in the field.

You probably can't calculate a prediction about compression. You would
need
to do lab experiments plotting compression against time, pressure and
temperature. It's easier to just find an alternative construction.

That's interesting. I can understand that the glass in the PCB is a
fluid
and will flow over time. But is there something more quantifiable than
gradually squashes? Would this mean by next Thursday, next year, or
1000
years from now? By how much would it deform over time? If I wanted to
calculate this effect, how would I do that? (I'm an electrical engineer
-
fluid dynamics is a very distant memory at this point)

In the particular case I'm looking at right now, this connection is not
serving as a DC power path so I'm not so concerned about arcing here.
However, it would be interesting to understand this better for future
designs.

In fact I might be more concerned about the screw actually coming loose
as a
result of this compression, however I've never heard of such a thing. I
guess that returns me to my locking washer question.

thanks,
kim

You should not include the PWB as part of the sandwich in an electrical
connection. It gradually squashes and leaves a loose connection. The
answer
is generally to use a soldered jumper and lug to make connections from
board
to chassis. The same applies to other board connections such as board to
busbar or similar connections. We have experienced arcing and board
destruction due to such designs on DC power output connections.

Hi-

We have a fairly straightforward requirement of mounting a PCB into a
steel
chassis. The chassis has PEM type standoffs and the PCB is held to them
with
machine screws. These connections provide an electrical ground path
between
the PCB and the chassis.

In other words, we have what seems to be the fairly ordinary and common
set
of requirements. We need to have mechanical reliability (so the PCB is
held
in place), nothing should break during assembly, the screws should not
be
able to work themselves out, and electrical conductivity should be low
for a
low impedance ground path. Seems simple, yet all of us here have a
different
opinion about how to do this properly, we've all done it a variety of
ways
in our past, and none of us seems to have the right expertise to really
claim to know the definitive answer.

I'm hoping to get some

Unapproved sample importation?

Hi Group:

My client wishes to import one or two units of some products to their
marketing representatives in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand,
China, Hong Kong. I have checked various regulatory sources, and I didn't
find any restrictions on importation of marketing samples.

The units are FCC and UL approved for North America, but have not been
submitted for approval in the destination countries. Are there some import
restrictions in place that I haven't found?

Any help is appreciated.

All interested -

The IEC has just announced an upcoming on-line IEC 60417
symbol library will be made available soon (I checked and it's not yet
available through the IEC Web Store). Don't expect to access them
gratis, as they once were on the Chiba University, Ikeda Lab web site
(even though fee based, this could be very handy). Pricing was not
announced.

Access to the databases is by subscription: clients can purchase a
subscription for a 3, 6, 12 or 24-month period giving them access to the
full collection of graphical symbols.

Hi,

It seems not a pure friction to implant intelligent IC into human brains.
Some people made prediction about this new breed of human being. Some are
talking about downloading certain virtual sense from Internet. ... Let's
put
aside the feasibility and focus only on related EMC/Safety concerns.

1. If there going to be a wireless access from human brain to Internet, do
we have the same Safety concern as cellular phone?
2. It would also be possible to directly communicate each other via brain
ICs. We don't have to exchange thoughts by means of any language (spoken
and
written) or eye contact. ... Should we have EMC standards to regulate the
emission level of brain waves and immunity capability for brain ICs?

Thanks.
