Question concerning antenna carousels, their usefulness, credibility of data collected, and......

Et Al:

I am soliciting opinions from anyone who has attempted using an antenna
carousel that aids in doing automated EMI measurements under CISPR 25.

The CISPR 25 specification provides requirements in terms of spacings of
the antenna elements from the walls of the room, size of the room, use
of anechoic material, etc but not pertaining to adjacent antennas. In
addition, certain automotive companies place further requirements in
terms of expected performance relative to Round Robin results of a Test
Artifact taken at several labs before allowing a new lab to be listed as
AEMCLRP accredited.

I look forward to hearing from those involved in the Automotive Industry
who have information either good/bad relating to this issue.

One solution that would soon get rid of the problem at its source,
would be to have the Marketing Moron do a few of the upgrades himself.

Hello good people

Just say someone in your marketing department came up with the bright
idea
of selling upgrade kits to an unqualified, untrained end user that
involved
removing the top cover of a product.  In the process not only would the
victim be exposed to hazardous voltages (if the product was still
connected
to the mains) but he/she would also have to wire up mains connections.
There would also be a possibility that critical insulation would be
disturbed.

Apart from telling them that they were mad and suggesting that someone
could
be killed or seriously injured, would there be any black and white
legislation that you could use to help bin this idea?  I can't find
anything
specific in EN60065 or the LVD.

Safety Margins based on NSA premises

Another important point to consider on safety margins is how the site
performed for Normalized Site Attenuation (NSA) when applicable.

A +/-4dB variation is the maximum allowable for NSA based on the premise
that 1.5 dB is attributable to the site uncertainty and 2.5 dB is
attributable to instrumentation uncertainty.

Considering these uncertainties, if a mere 3 dB of margin is considered
as safe, it is conceivable that the same EUT could be measured 8 dB
different at another site (i.e. the FCC's Site). However, if a 10 dB
margin is achievable, this automatically factors out site conjugate
uncertainties and provides an additional 2 dB margin for a worst-case
scenario.

If an Optical Isolation Circuit, Be Careful.....

Paolo,

My experience has been that if it is an Optical Isolation Circuit, the
actual RF isolation is usually far from desirable because of undesirable
capacitive coupling that occurs within the transmit and receive
circuitry.

I would suggest that you determine if undesirable coupling occurs when
the circuit is either active or inactive or all the time. Also, try
removing the high-side of power from either side of the Isolation
Circuit and determine if the undesirable RF coupling disappears. Between
these two experiments, this should give you a pretty good idea of the
causal relationship.

I'm dealing with a PCB that has a floating section isolated from the

of the board for safety purposes (patient applied part).
I found out some problems with emissions, due to the coupling between

floating part and of the PCB and the earthed one.

My questions are concerning the layout design of the floating area:

1) Is it best to minimize the HF capacitive coupling between the earthed
ground and the floating ground or to maximize it?
2) Is it best to reduce the amount of the floating ground or to increase
it?

Does it depend on the goodness of the main ground, i.e. how much it is
cold ?  (I see the board as a dipole with one end connected to earth,
and
the other floating).

With respect to your radiated emissions dilemna, useful information
would be the clock speeds, cable lengths, and worst-case mode of
operation at which emissions are the highest. Generally, if you invoke
the divide and conquer rule, it should be an easier matter pinpointing
the dominant sources of emissions.
