Temperature Measuring of Magnetic Components

1999-08-24 Thread Kamran Mohajer

Hello EMC-PSTCers,

I wonder if anyone knows of the method of measuring temperature limits on
magnetic components. I happen to get involved in this and found that my
results are different than the vendors result by as much as 10-15 degrees on
measuring on a same magnetic component. Even applying the thermocouple to
different location on a coil seems to give you different results. Is there a
method that I should be following to measure temperature with thermocouples
methods, not change of resistance, on magnetic parts such as transformers,
coils, etc.?

Thanks,

Topic: Evaluation of Creepages and Clearances in Telecommunications
Circuits
Speaker: Mr. Peter Tarver
Location: Hewlett Packard, 19447 Prunridge Ave. Cupertino CA, Bldg.
48, Oakroom

PRESENTATION:

Mr. Peter Tarver, will use the UL 1950/CSA 950 BiNational Standard as the
primary reference in his evaluation of creepages and clearances in
telecommunications circuits. As a natural consequence, all harmonized 950
based standards that include A4 will fall into line with the program.

PRESENTER BACKGROUND:

Peter earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from CSU Fresno in 1984, joining
UL in September of that year. Peter's early work at UL included evaluations
of a wide range of transformers, power distribution and circuit protection
devices, and household audio equipment. After a stint with plastics and
printed wiring boards, Peter began working with telephone equipment and ITE
in 1989, quickly becoming the UL Santa Clara Office's Designated Engineer
for UL 1459 (the Standard for Telephone Equipment). Peter also was among
the original members of the UL 1950 Practical Applications Committee, helped
refine UL's requirements for liquid handling systems in ITE and was
responsible for training UL's ITE engineers on Clause 6 when introduced with
the Second Edition of UL 1950.

Joining Nortel late in 1994, Peter has helped acquire and maintain global
safety certifications for Nortel products and gaining laboratory
accreditations for the Mission Park Homologation Engineering Dept.

Peter also has recently accepted an invitation as an attending member of
UL's Subject 1950 Industry Advisory Conference.

RE: NRTL Value

1998-04-28 Thread Kamran Mohajer
George,

I can understand your frustration in this situation. What I would suggest
is that if the changes that the inspector is requiring is not a safety
hazard and is mainly to comply with the intent of the requirements then it
is best to try to follow through with these changes. However, you may need
to let the NRTL know that you need additional time to make these changes and
they will usually honor these types of situations. For example, let your
incorrect label to deplete or allow you to change your documentation
processes and mechanical drawing through an Engineering Change Order (ECO).
I know most NRTLs have no idea how long it usually takes for making changes
even to a simple label.

For those of you working in a NRTL, I would like to share the following so
you may understand George's frustration. In a midsize to a large company, a
simple change to a label will require to red mark the existing CAD drawing,
approval from the mechanical design engineer so that the change does not
impact any thing else. Once you have obtain all of the informal agreements
then you need to write an ECO, required if the organization is an ISO 9000
certified, and then formally submit this ECO. An ECO usually requires
signature from number of cross functional departments in the organization.
I think at one time, couple of years ago someone did an analysis and came up
with a rough estimate of $5000 to write and implement an ECO. I personally
think $5000 is a very low estimate considering all the paper work, time it
takes to generate it, revise and file it. After all the signatures are
sought then the design is sent out to the label vendor for camera ready film
and final approval, this process alone takes about two weeks. surely, you
can rush all this, however, if your rush a project in a NRTL it cost more
money. The same thing is true for dealing with outside vendors. Hopefully,
this will shed some light for those of you working in a NRTL.

George, if the change is significant and it requires considerable amount of
money to implement it then I would suggest you contact the project engineer
and reason with him/her. Sometimes the engineer has a better insight into a
product than a FUS inspector. I would like to add that no engineer that is
working for an NRTL is perfect just like you and me are not perfect.
Therefore, oversights are made occasionally due to number of reasons. I
believe as regulatory engineers we need to make sure that our design
complies with the intent/requirements of the standard and consequently we
are responsible for the design of a product and not the NRTL.

By the way my multiple choice answer to your question is "None of the
above".

Measuring the Noise level of an ITE PC or Workstation

1998-03-25 Thread Kamran Mohajer
Fellow Engineers,

I would like to find out what standard is being used for measuring noise
levels for ITE equipment these days. In particular, I am interested in
noise level measurement for PCs and workstations. Are there any labs in the
northern California or in California that could do this test? I would
appreciate your input on this matter.

Can anyone assist me in letting me know what are the requirements for safety
and EMC in the subject countries for a commercial ITE (workstations,

consumer type products shipped in to the subject countries but nothing
specific for commercial type products. I would also appreciate the name,
address, phone and fax numbers of contacts and possibly if in-country
presence for the US company is a requirement.

From: SCV - PSTC Award Committee

Last year the SCV - PSTC implemented an award for the Product Safety
professionals called Mike DeMartini Award. Last year's award included only
local nominees. However, this year we are extending this award to include
nominees within the state of California. Now we are soliciting nominees for
the second annual De Martini Award.

Before we go into details, here is some background information about the
program.

The award program was established:

1. As a memorial to Michael J. DeMartini who contributed a great deal to
product safety.
2. To recognize others who like Mike have contributed significantly to product
safety.
3. To encourage participation in various product safety related activities.

Product Safety related activities that may be recognized by the award include
but are not limited to safety of products, standards development, IEEE Product
Safety Technical Committee support, Safety related research,
publication/communication of safety concepts, safety education, certification,
safety test equipment and procedures.

Only current IEEE members may nominate an award candidate. However, membership
in the IEEE is not required to be an award nominee. Nominees must be living in
California and working in the product safety field or a field closely
associated with product safety. Each nominee submittal will be judged by the
Awards Committee according to the six criteria indicated on the following
Submittal Form.

Nominations are to be submitted using the attached

Hello All,

From time to time I have found it necessary to translate a
correspondence, technical article, etc. from German, French or some
other foreign language to English. This is usually because no English
copy exists.

Does anyone have any good experiences with a technical
translator that they would recommend??

Thanks for the information.

Technical meeting at Apple Computers, 4 Infinity Loop,

   Cupertino, CA at 7:30 pm.

Topic/Speaker: "Physics and Testing of ESD" by David Pommerenke, HP.

On December 10 the Santa Clara Valley Electromagnetic Compatibility Society
will hear a presentation by David Pommerenke, HP, on the topic "Physics and
Testing of ESD".

David Pommerenke will discuss two important aspects of ESD testing. The first
addresses the issue of why air discharge seem to be so unrepeatable, and will
cover the dominant variables that contribute to this aspect of ESD including
charge and voltage, arc initiation, arc resistance, object impedance,
currents, transient fields, and lower rise time limit.

Knowing the physical parameters which determine the severeness of ESD the
second part of the talk will compare ESD testing with real ESD guided by the
following key questions: Is the standard rise time realistic ? What are
unintended radiations? How similar are different brand simulators ?

David Pommerenke was born April 11, 1962 in Ann Arbor. He received his diploma
in
Electrical Engineering in 1989 from the Technical University Berlin. He worked
at the same university from 1990 until 1996 as research and teaching assistant
in EMC and High Voltage. In 1995 he received his Ph.D. on 'Transient Fields of
ESD'. Since August 1996 he's been employed as an EMC Engineer for the HP
Roseville site responsible for the test an implementation of new EMC methods.
Over the past several years he has published 20 papers on system level ESD,
the breakdown process, numerical calculation of ESD, high voltage partial
discharge detection systems and on project oriented teaching.
