dielectric constant of foam board

2003-10-15 Thread brent.dew...@us.datex-ohmeda.com

Anybody have a dielectric constant for Owens Corning Foamular board? It's
a pink, medium density extruded polystyrene foam found at most building
supply places. I'm guessing 1.1-1.2, but that's just a guess.

TIA,

Brent

Re: Conducted emissions--green wire?

2003-07-14 Thread brent.dew...@us.datex-ohmeda.com

I don't think I'd go back to that test house! What the technician did was
both wrong and potentially dangerous. The closest test method to this that
I know of was under the old VDE 0871 regulation in which a 50 ohm-50
microhenry network was inserted into the protective earth to lift the
lead at conducted emissions frequencies.

Dear Listers:

I recently watched a conducted emissions test. Said test technician
connected Line to a LISN, Neutral to a LISN, and ground got stuck in a
piece
of foam to keep it from touching anything. This bothered me and I
questioned this. However, according to said test technician, that is what
they are supposed to do.
The LISN's and the EUT were put on a metal table surface. The LISN's
were
well strapped down, but my thing was just sitting there. Doesn't this mean
that the impedance of the EUT is some random number depending on the
materials and surface finishes of the table, EUT, and where they put the
LISN's? The stand I used for the EUT isn't really part of the EUT, just
something I had to hold it up. What happens when somebody else mounts a
display on a furniture lift and puts it in a piece of wooden furniture?

Re: Monitoring Random ESD events

2003-07-08 Thread brent.dew...@us.datex-ohmeda.com

If you can get near the sensors (1 inch), 3M makes a static field meter.
Their Model 718 is a non-contact device and has an analog output
proportional to the field for logging.

Best of luck,

I'm pretty new to the EMC scene and I need to monitor a product to see
what kind of ESD events it generates on its own. The customer wants me to
attach my oscope to their sensors and see what kind of ESD voltages their
sensors see in daily operation.

I know that I don't want to directly connect the oscope to the sensors
while the machine is running. I was trying to figure out a way to
isolate the signals on the sensors from the oscope but still get a value
that is useful. I was thinking of some sort of current loop around the
sensor wires. How would I correlate the current loop measurement to an
ESD voltage?

I'm probably not providing enough information but I'm not really sure what
information will be needed.

Thank you,

Czech medical grounding?

2003-06-28 Thread brent.dew...@us.datex-ohmeda.com

I got some weird feedback from one of our sales people in the Czech
republic. One of the local folks said they were concerned that a metal
cased piece of medical electrical equipment didn't have a separate ground
for when it was used on internal batteries. I'm an EMC guy so I was
wondering if any of the safety experts out there could tell me if this
makes any sense from a regulatory standpoint.

Thanks!

Re: another OATS question

2003-06-23 Thread brent.dew...@us.datex-ohmeda.com

Hi Ken,

Only the maximum reading over the scan height is used. The received signal
is nominally the vector sum of the line of sight path and the reflected or
image path from the ground plane. In horizontal polarization there is
also 180 degree phase shift due to conservation of charge physics with the
ground plane.

Dear All,
I have read in various places that the new edition of IEC/EN 60601-1-2 is
in
effect (FDA in the US).
As yet, only EN 60601-1-2: 1993 is listed in the OJ (December 2002).
Does anyone know when the new edition will be listed in the OJ and thus
become official?
Regarding EN 55022: 1998 + Amendment A1: 2000, I have also read that the
application of this standard is being delayed. Does anyone have any
information as to when it will become applicable?
