Re: [PSES] EMC Measurement Software

2017-08-03 Thread Grasso, Charles
James - In my travels (various labs etc..) the most popular software is the one
the
lab writes and customizes itself. Instead of writing the program - you can spend
hours customizing a "one fits all" type and running into weird issues anyways
- I know - been there done that.

Point take about the boss you work for !

Hello all,

Thanks for all the great responses, they've certainly helped clarify my
thoughts.

I already have several test apps written in VB to control things like turntable
/ antenna mast, spectrum analyser, radiated RF immunity and results extraction
from existing data files. All the building blocks required to write a system
and it can be customised easily. However I have to balance this with my time,
as a sole business owner I have to consider where my time is best spent and
trying to balance all aspects of the business. My boss is a hard task master
;-) Perhaps the investment in this software will be worthwhile in the long run.

Once again, many thanks!

Hello group,

I'm investigating upgrades to my existing EMC measurement software (R
ESXS-K1) and have found the following options:

  *   R Elektra (new) / ES-Scan / EMC32
  *   Dare RadiMation
  *   Toyo EMC measurement software
  *   ETS Lindgren TILE!
  *   Nexio BAT-EMC
  * NI LabView and develop own routines
  * Write own from scratch (VB / C#)

Are there any others worth considering? What "gotchas" or issues am I likely to
run into?

It needs to drive a R ESHS 10 (conducted) and a ESVS 10 (radiated). Bonus
points for support for R FSP 30 and custom turntable control.

Many thanks in advance!
James

Re: [PSES] EMC Measurement Software

2017-08-01 Thread Brian O'Connell
Labview. Attractive for speed of initial development. Ugly for debugging and
adding new features and 'reading' an old vi. Attractive for reliability when
used with NI hardware and some of the more common 3d party instruments. Ugly
where each version iteration of windoze and/or LV breaks your existing systems.
Ignore the GUI - the analytic comparisons should NOT be graphical vs. textual;
it should be dataflow vs. imperative.

VB or C#. Attractive for the surprisingly effective and elegant IDE (Visual
Studio). Ugly for programming languages that are a non-standard standard and
being depending on the windoze platform. Would suggest C# over VB any day of
the week. Attractive for a large body of proven code. Ugly for a problematic
licensing scheme found in most C# technical libraries.

Tile. Previously discussed in this venue. Attractive for being the most likely
candidate as an industry standard. Ugly for being convoluted and butt-ugly ugly
ugly.

Other stuff. No significant experience or exposure.

Suggestions.
1. DIY. Domain-specific development assumes you have a domain-specific expert
that can code monkey; and if not available, hope your boss is very patient
while you stumble around learning the tool-chain or learn EMC theory and
standards. So no DIY unless you have The Person or an understanding (?) boss.

If you are capable enough for a DIY solution, then you probably already know
that many systems that actually work are typically done using stuff such as ISO
C/C++ and Python. Abundance of code available for the common instruments. Write
small single type-test programs to start and build your tower of babel from
there. And use version control. And do not use windoze.

Hello group,

I'm investigating upgrades to my existing EMC measurement software (R
ESXS-K1) and have found the following options:

* R Elektra (new) / ES-Scan / EMC32
* Dare RadiMation
* Toyo EMC measurement software
* ETS Lindgren TILE!
* Nexio BAT-EMC

Re: [PSES] EMC Measurement Software

2017-08-01 Thread Paasche, Dieter
Hi

I am using TILE for radiated emissions. I use it for Conducted emissions as a
back-up. Personally, I think there is no software that can do an accurate
radiated emissions test. I do a pre-scan automatically and then the final scan
manually. Tile allows you that flexibility although it is not perfect.

If you want some special personal features it is very good. It is similar to
Labview but easier to program. You would still have to do something, but you do
not need to be a software programmer expert. Not all functions are available so
you need to add some commands. I personally like that, but not everybody does.

The lab we have is mostly for prescan and troubleshooting, so it needs to be
flexible. I work with different engineers and frequently look for different
things, so TILE allows me that flexibility and still gets me good graphs and
tables.

Disadvantage: Every run will save all your settings. That means your files are
big. You can gave all information into one file, but then your file would be
even bigger. I personally have one file per limit. These files are smaller, but
then it makes it time consuming when you have to update correction factors for
example.
You pay an annual fee for maintenance. Not sure about the other software.
However the support is good.

Back in my old times I used Toyo software. (used to work for Sony) I like it,
but was not that flexible, Means it is good for users or for certified labs. I
was very good for all the special audio and video immunity tests.

I also have the experience of somebody writing a software with Labview. It was
very time consuming and costly The software was very very good. It can do a
very accurate radiated emissions, although it would take at least 4 hours for
one run. So if you have time and you want something automatically that one
would work. However the company that hired the programmer paid a very high
price and it took at least a year until it was running as everybody wanted.
So, if Labview is difficult, I can imagine that starting from scratch is even
more difficult.

R, I have seen the EMC32. Personally I have not used it but looks to me good
enough. The people I have seen using it, seem to like it.

I don't know the rest.

I guess deciding what software you want to use depends on how much flexibility
you want to spend in testing. (how much for prescan, how much for final scan,
how much time you have for the software to give you an accurate results. etc.)
Radiated emissions is especially difficult if you have jumping signals. To get
accurate test results you would have to run the turntable and antenna mast ery
slowly and have several iterations done before you really find the worst case
condition. So I personally ended up doing the final scan manually which was
faster for the time I had available per unit.

RE: EMC test software - TILE

2006-09-15 Thread emc-p...@ieee.org
So what you are saying is that he sends you an instrument driver that he has
no way of testing. If/when you tell him that it works fine, you have only
tested it using the functions needed for your particular application. It may
not work for the next person.

When I started working at my present employer, they had been using Tile for a
few years. As I understand it, the profiles they were using had been setup by
a representative of Quantum Change. They were very happy with it. However,
within short order, I discovered problems with every instrument driver they
were using. The driver for the spectrum analyzer had a problem that caused
measurement errors of as much as 8dB. Yes, Mike did fix (most) of the
problems, but I wonder how many other happy users have no idea they have
problems.

One problem I discovered, in the Immunity section, was that the Max sig-gen
level did not always work. If a certain sequence of events occured, it would
set the signal generator level way above the max level set by the user, and
way above the 0dBm limit of most amplifiers. Luckily, it has not destroyed any
equipment -- yet.

And while Tile is very flexible -- I don't dispute that -- the user interface
is lacking. While the flowchart looks a little like Labview, that is where the
similarity ends. However, that is usually the part of the package that you
will see emphasized in literature.

Yes, I am sure there are a lot of labs using it succesfully. What I am saying
is that there is a lot of room for improvement.

I always approach software as a pessimist. Instead of assuming it is working
correctly and trying to prove it, I assume it is NOT working correctly, and
try to prove that. I've discovered that I find more problems that way. :-)

Good People,

I specifically did not want to get into code wars, but since other people
have intro'd the 'T' vs 'U' argument, I will append to what has been said.

CAVEAT: I am NOT an EMC expert, and would not even qualify as a journeyman
EMC tech.

I have observed some configuration management problems with TILE that were
(in my opinion) design-related.

I have experienced some support problems with UL stuff.

IMO, both systems attempt too much.

If one is able and has the time (hah?!?!), I would encourage EMC test labs
to base their automation systems on Linux/BSD/Unix boxen - reliable, simple,
and timeless. Write small modular test drivers that are specific to your
needs, abstract instrument drivers, and use C only if you have multiple
years of serious experience (I like to write hardware drivers in C, and all
else in Python).

luck,
Brian

I have used both Tile and the UL software. While the Tile package has
improved over the years, it is still very user-unfriendly and quirky, IMHO.

I worked at UL for 6 years and used the UL software extensively for
emissions testing. It, too, has its quirks, but it is a very capable
package. As I understand it, the UL software started out as the HP package
with extensive modifications and enhancements.

The learning curve for either package is steep. If I had to choose between
the two, I would go with the UL package.

As for immunity, I wrote a lot of software for both conducted and radiated
immunity. If you need a good conducted immunity package, check out:

http://emc.toprudder.com/software/radcon/index.html

It includes some instrument drivers, but it has a facility to allow you to
create your own instrument files if you are familiar with the GPIB commands
for your instrument. If you use the National Instruments GPIB interface, you
can use the NISpy program to view the GPIB commands sent by other programs.

All of the major instrument vendors offer test and reporting software,
so
your selection tends to be determined by the hardware already sitting
on the
bench. Note that test automation is probably mandatory for GTEM cell

My employer bought the emc report generator app from Agilent (I have

Google for emc test software and become a bit overwhelmed...

RE: EMC test software - TILE

2006-09-15 Thread emc-p...@ieee.org
Another opinion:
As with anything, there is a tradeoff between complexity and flexibility and
this is especially true with EMC software. You won't find a more flexible EMC
software package than TILE.and really it is pretty straight
forward to use. It is based on a GUI interface much like LABVIEW. If you
need to do customized EMC test automation, and eventually you will (each
industry has it's own quirks), you will not find a better overall package.
Mike Hart's support of TILE is second to none in the industry. He has more
instrument drivers available than any other package..and if by
chance you happen to come up with an instrument (GPIB based) that TILE does
not have a driver for, all you need to do is send the GPIB command list to
Mike and he'll make it for you, usually in a couple of days. He'll even add
custom features and capabilities to TILE for you. He's done these for me on
numerous occasions, all at no extra cost. No politics, committee approvals or
marketing reviews. You'll be hard pressed to find another EMC software vendor
that will do all that.

I may sound like I have an affiliation with Quantum Change (TILE), but I do
not. I am simply an end user of the product and have experienced the package
and unparalleled support first hand.

RE: EMC test software - TILE

2006-09-15 Thread emc-p...@ieee.org
I have used both Tile and the UL software. While the Tile package has improved
over the years, it is still very user-unfriendly and quirky, IMHO.

I worked at UL for 6 years and used the UL software extensively for emissions
testing. It, too, has its quirks, but it is a very capable package. As I
understand it, the UL software started out as the HP package with extensive
modifications and enhancements.

The learning curve for either package is steep. If I had to choose between the
two, I would go with the UL package.

As for immunity, I wrote a lot of software for both conducted and radiated
immunity. If you need a good conducted immunity package, check out:

 http://emc.toprudder.com/software/radcon/index.html
http://emc.toprudder.com/software/radcon/index.html

It includes some instrument drivers, but it has a facility to allow you to
create your own instrument files if you are familiar with the GPIB commands
for your instrument. If you use the National Instruments GPIB interface, you
can use the NISpy program to view the GPIB commands sent by other programs.

satisfactory driving our HP8568B test rack for emissions work. It was

RE: EMC test software

Hi Ian,

This is only speaking for emissions testing/reporting SW. I have used an
application called SoftPlot ( http://www.softplot.com
http://www.softplot.com). It works quite well with the 2 SA's that I still
have, interfaces well with other types of instruments (including o'scopes
other types of analyzers) via a number of interface protocols, and is
relatively inexpensive.

EMC modeling software/freeware

2005-09-19 Thread emc-p...@ieee.org
What is the most user friendly, powerful EMC modeling software or tools (or
toolbox) that can be used for introductory EMC education? Preferably
shareware or freeware, I'm trying to help a University put together an
introductory course for 3rd or 4th year students. The thought is currently
to model transmission lines (coax, UTP, simple STP), simple enclosures and
possibly PCBs.

As an additional thought, I would be very curious to hear the different
opinions of the collective on the various EMC textbooks available too,
without flames. Offline comments welcomed.

Thanks,
Doug

Sergio,

I apologize for the late reply, however, I have some information that may
be of use to you.

We have been using the Omega PLUS software for board level analysis for
roughly 1.5 years. We use the software for a number of purposes:

1) Cross-talk analysis
2) Signal Integrity Analysis
3) E/H Field 2D Analysis

One of the nice features it has is the running database. It keeps track of
all of your component models so that you don't have to rebuild them each
time you simulate boards. As you build the database, simulations become
quick and easy since the software recalls the components from that
database.

We've found good correlation between our product measurements and the
simulation results. We also use the tool as a part of our design process
to help us make decisions on which layout techniques will result in lower
emissions. Additionally, the technical support is wonderful!

I can provide more information as needed, or answer any questions. Please
let me know.

Change in emc-pstc Software?

2002-02-15 Thread georgea

Wow!

This morning is the first time I've ever received postings from this
listserver
that were NOT in 10 pitch Courier font style, which is dull I
should know,
as my site has dealt with fonts for over forty years, beginning with the
IBM
typewriters, and now in printers.

Today I saw Joe's post which included 12 pitch Helvetica, Tania's 10 pitch
Helvetica, and 10 pitch Helvetica bold. Wow! I almost confused the note
for
an internal one, as we pretty much use 10 pitch Helvetica as the default
font.

Whatever IEEE did to get rid of the default Courier, I applaud!!

George

1999-11-26 Thread Rossi Giuseppe

Mr. Venter,

far from my intention to do polemics,
but I'm a little bit sceptic on the figure
you mention: a couple of db is a number that is far better than the error
capability
of a radiated emission mesaurement.

Moreover often other issue such as the capability
of finding resonance frequencies are also important.

Hi

They say that it is not good practise to answer a question
with another
question but in this case it is appropriate. How much money
are you
prepared to spend?

In my opinion after evaluating a number of these software
packages I
would say that there are only two that I have seen that have
good
correlation between simulation data and actual measured
data.
Unfortunately both of these packages, EMC workbench and
Viewlogic, are
priced in the US$90,000 - US$120,000 region. I must however
warn you
that in my study I have realised that the cheap packages,
e.g. US$2000
are very limited and often yield incorrect and unreliable
results. The
above-mentioned packages I have seen in operation and both
yield
simulation results within a couple of dB from the measured
results. I
would therefore recommend one of them. Something apart from
price, that
may sway your decision is you CAD package. The interface
from this
package to the simulation tool might restrict you as to
usable software.

Yours faithfully

RE: EMC and Software

1999-03-02 Thread Knighten, Jim
Bob,

In my experience in the commercial computing arena at NCR I have found
that software can definitely influence radiated emissions.

My experience is in very high speed digital systems. In systems where
the dominant EMI sources are from the I/O signals on cables, then the
bit pattern of that signal has a big influence on radiated emissions.
The bit pattern is determined by software, or firmware, or some set of
computer instructions.

For example, I have a very high speed digital system that idles with a
bit pattern that is much like a repetitive clock pulse. It produces a
very strong emission at its characteristic frequency. However, when the
system is truly operating and sending real data, the signal bit patterns
on the cables are much more complex, producing a much richer spectrum of
radiated emissions, but with the peaks many dB lower than the idle
pattern's peak. In this case, the software has a real influence on the
emissions spectrum.

I think that if you had a system that had noisier boards, so that an
important EMI source were common-mode signals on the ground plane from
clock signals (a common problem), then software activity may have much
less effect on radiated emissions.

Yes, the effects are system dependent, but for some categories of
systems, software activity is an important ingredient in producing
radiated emissions.

I have another example! We use arrays of disk drive storage (many
gigabytes) in our systems. Typically, these arrays are driven by SCSI
cables. We have found over the years that we should run software
programs that try to maximize disk activity (reads and writes) when
performing EMI compliance tests. We usually get stronger emissions when
the drives are very active. This is another example of software
influencing radiated emissions.

This is a bit of a ramble, but I hope the thoughts are helpful to you.

Sorry for not being clear:

I have received and read a fair amount of data on the
containment and
recovery from ESD spikes through the use of software.

Can software also control and/or limit the amount of emissions
from
equipment? Harmonics? Voltage variations?

I know the question is broad and the answers may be equipment
specific.
But when software and hardware design engineers get together on
a design,
are there any general rules of thumb or specifics that they
should be
aware of in terms of EMC?

Thanks again,

Bob Heller

Bob and EMC-PSTC colleagues:

There was an excellent colloquium on this subject at the IEE in London
last November. I am appending below a copy of the announcement (which
did appear here last year), and the IEE or Richard Marshall may be able
to provide copies of the digest.

ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY OF SOFTWARE
IEE, Savoy Place, London WC2R 0BL, UK
Thursday, 12 November 1998

Colloquium organised by IEE Professional Group E2 (Electromagnetic
compatibility). Co-sponsored by the British Computer Society.

Appropriate software resilience can significantly improve the immunity of
computer based hardware that must operate despite electromagnetic
interference. Input, output and network connections pose particular
problems. In cost-sensitive applications the requirement for filtering
and shielding can be reduced, and in high integrity systems software can
help ensure fault-tolerant or fail-safe response to extreme
electromagnetic stress.

Accordingly the Colloquium will address the software design techniques
that can improve immunity to lightning and electrostatic discharge, to
radiation from cellular phones and other transmitters and to mains-borne
interference. Software design to minimise emissions will be of interest.
Closely related hardware such as watchdog circuits will be covered.
Contributions covering the interaction between software resilience and
EMC testing will be welcomed, as will descriptions of new developments
and tutorial papers.

Special provision will be made for short contributions describing
specific problems and their solutions.

For details of attendance at the Colloquium, contact

N.B. In response to queries in the EMC-PSTC mailing list (for details of
this list see section 1.4 of the s.e.e.c FAQ), Richard responded with the
following FAQs:

Readers have asked:

* If they can get the colloquium papers?

The answer is yes, after the event, and at a charge. Email me at
richard.marsh...@lineone.net if you want details in November.

* What is it all about?

   Two examples:

*  Software filtering of inputs.

   I have recently done a fast-transient test to IEC801-4 on a
microprocessor based product that serves two different functions
according to the position of a remote switch. It failed the test,
jumping from one function to the other when the test was applied.
(The IEC801-4 bursts are quite brief but recur every 300 ms during
   the test).

If the software had been written to wait and check again, say
200 ms after the switch appeared to have changed, that it was
indeed still changed, then the product would have been immune to
this interference. The resulting delay in responding to the
switch would not have mattered in this application and a few
extra lines of code cost nothing when the device is in quantity
   production.

* Reset and restart after program corruption

Watchdogs are actually quite difficult to design, but a good one
can ensure that a product recovers without any help from the user
after impulsive interference - fast transient or ESD - which can
change the failure from performance criterion A to performance
   criterion B in EN50082-1.

Now, have readers any experiences of this sort of software design/EMC
interaction that they could share? If so I would like to hear them!.

There are various software techniques to filters the effects of transients
and interference on input circuits with embedded software based products.
There range from averaging, successive sampling and comparison through to
 signal analysis and recovery.

One important rule of thumb is that software cannot recover information
 where it doesn't exist.

On the issue of ESD spikes, its seems that you are trying to recover from
a software crash induced by hardware susceptibility to transients. There
are various techniques that can be used from watchdog timers, program
boundary checking, cyclic reset and run operation etc.

If the failure can result in a hazardous condition rather than an
unreliable product then you have a different and a more serious problem.
In this case you would need to establish and prove the safe operation of
this product by formal management of the functional safety of the product.

You can look at IEC61508 (Functional safety of electrical/ electronic/
programmable electronic safety related systems) for guidance here. Part 6
of this standard has a good library of techniques to handle software and
hardware failures. UL1998 also has a list of useful measures to address
the results of hardware failures and malfunctions on software.

 I hope this helps...
