Ian, I did not read through all of the responses your inquiry generated, but just to confirm are you concerned with the ambient environment your product(s) work in, or more along the lines of green standards such as energy efficiency (Energy Star), carbon footprint, cost of ownership for the intended life of the product, etc? No, 60529 is concerned only with degrees of protection provided by enclosures; i.e. Ingress Protection. 60068 is environmental test standards, and includes all sorts of environmental tests such as temperature (steady-state, shock, dry, damp, etc), humidity, vibration, shock, and so on. Both standards may be applied in assessing your product. The scope statement The standard classifies groups of environmental parameters and their severities to which a product may be exposed under its use conditions, including periods of erection work, down time, maintenance and repair, when mounted for stationary use at locations which are non-weatherprotected. would seem to indicate that the series is used to define enviremental test levels - correct ? thanks much. Take all of the parts of 60068-2-x and put them together and you will have something very similar to MIL-STD-810. 60068 does not define test levels for specific applications, only the test methods. 60721 has been around a long while, but does not seem to be in particularly common usage. It enables you to define an environment for virtually all points in a product's lifecycle/mission profile, and consequently to define the test levels that will enable you to verify performance for that mission profile. Having done that, you can go to 60068 for the test methods. Can anyone suggest any good reference documents etc on environmental testing of electrical equipment. The testing I am concerned with is primarily as part of the requirements of EN 61010-1:2001 but could also involve remedial work.
