Please make sure you are running the latest version of emc, which is
currently emc 2.1.5. It includes "fix for bug 1701900 - spindle does
not turn off when going into machine-off state".

In a terminal, type `man truetype-tracer'. In the man page are some
examples and instructions.

I think that's the only one that's not strictly related to the EMC2
install. To see the input filters that do other fun stuff, be sure to
run sim/axis and open an image file or python file (both are available
in the sample files that come with the distribution).

[Emc-users] TrueType Tracer

2007-05-24 Thread Andre' Blanchard
I found and downloaded this nifty looking program
(truetype-tracer_3.0-2_i386.deb) from Chris Radek's web page. When I went
to install it on a recently installed EMC2 Live system it tells me the
program is already installed.

So :( how do I run the program!!??
I found the executable but it seems reluctant to run.

And is there a list of all the little programs like this that come with the
live install?

Of course, you have to have an encoder on the spindle.
And, you have to provide a way to feed this encoder information
back to the computer. We first demonstrated this capability at
the 2006 CNC Workshop. I demoed my mini-mill pretending to be a
lathe at the 2007 NAMES show last month. I had some strange
driver/interface problems that are now fixed, and it works like
a charm.

I have a set of config files on my web site that show how to do
this using my universal PWM controller :
http://jelinux.pico-systems.com/codes/univpwmthread/

Without that hardware, you would need to assign parallel port
pins for the encoder input and use the software encoder HAL
component.

Re: [Emc-users] I/O card recommendations, please?

2007-05-24 Thread Steve Stallings
Oops Ray credited us with a feature the PMDX-122 does
not provide. The PMDX-122 is buffered and will run Gecko
drives even from a 3.3 volt parallel port, but it DOES NOT
provide optical isolation for the input status signals. These
signals do go through a buffer on the PMDX-122 that will,
in most cases, protect the parallel port from damage due
to signals applied to the status inputs. It does not isolate
ground and thus cannot protect against damage due to
external voltages arriving through the ground connection.
Likewise for noise from equipment such as plasma cutters.

The folks at CANDCNC.com do offer an less expensive
MiniIO card the does provide optical isolation, though
you must buy another accessory card if you also want
a relay.

Right now, only a spindle with encoder and index pulse may be used.
The "index pulse" gives one pulse per revolution, and the rest of the
encoder signal (called phase-A and phase-B) ensures that emc is aware of
the orientation of the spindle at all times. I think that the
nist-lathe has a 1024 count per revolution encoder, which allows emc to
know the angle to within about 1/3 of a degree.

2007-05-24 Thread rehenry

Hi Pat. Long time since we've heard from you. Glad to hear that you're using
EMC2 and that it is working for you.

I've tried a lot of breakouts and the maker you mention is as good as they
come. The PMDX-122 is about as low cost as you find for fully isolated.

You might get away with just a screw terminal breakout if the stepper drives
you're using will handle raw parport output. Note that Gecko drives will NOT
work with a 3 volt parport sig. They will work with some PCI parports that put
out 5 volt.

A search for "parallel port breakout boards" will get you a list of 'em in just
about the order I've worked with them. The only one (passive) that I don't see
there is a ziplink din rail mount from automation direct.

Hope this helps. Good luck. Report back with your progress and (hint) add a
page to the wiki with your projects.

Thanks,
I'll try the nist-lathe config.
Does the index output need to be one pulse per revolution?
Can it be similar to what there is in mach2 program: several pulses per rev
with one pulse wider than the others.

Thanks, Isak.

Yes, it is possible. You need a spindle with encoder and index pulse
output. The sample configuration "nist-lathe" shows the necessary HAL
configuration when the encoder is connected to parport pins 11, 12, and
13.

The sample ngc file "threading.ngc" uses a bunch of G33 (spindle
synchronized motion) commands to cut a thread; the file "g76.ngc" uses
the threading canned cycle to make a 20TPI thread.

The User Manual has a descrition and diagram of the numbers that are
used by the G76 threading cycle -- page 143 in the version here:
http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.1/EMC2_User_Manual.pdf
