Is there a version named "workstation"? Never heard of it.

For the synaptic problem, maybe try ?

My install experience with Sheetcam has been all positive.

Autopackage version on Ubuntu 8.0.4 worked
0.0.26 + 2.8.8 debs on Ubuntu 8.0.4 worked
0.0.24 + 2.8.7 debs on Ubuntu 6.0.6 worked
0.0.26 + 2.8.8 debs on Mepis 6.5 worked (KDE desktop btw)

A couple of notes.
The libs directory has broken symbolic links to /home/les.local.

The set-up wizard loses it's settings whenever SheetCam is closed. The only
exception is on 8.0.4 which has a Sheetcam.ini file in my home directory.
Maybe it was left there by the autopackage install?

Any specific other distros you would like tested?
Having a blast with your app. :)

I'm not sure what the config tool is in Axis but if you use the EMC stepconf
wizard
you should be able to make a new config and test each axis as you go. If you
are
using the stepconf wizard then you need to be more specific as to what you did,
what you expect to happen and what happens.

Hobbycnc does not provide clear information on step timing the best we have is
here.

**Apologies if this is a repeat post. Sometimes this mailing list is a
frustrating format.**

Is there a version called "workstation"? Never heard of it.

For the synaptic/apt problem maybe try ? Forcing installs
is not ideal.

I have had zero failed Sheetcam installs so far.
Autopackage on Ubuntu 8.0.4 worked.
0.0.26 + 2.8.8 debs on the same 8.0.4 worked.
0.0.24 + 2.8.7 debs on Ubuntu 6.0.6 worked.
0.0.26 + 2.8.8 debs on Mepis 6.5 worked. (KDE Desktop btw)

A couple of issues:

Broken symbolic links to /home/les/.local littered about in libs directory.

Preferences are not saved between runs. The exception being 8.0.4 which has
a SheetCam.ini file in the home directory. Maybe this file is leftover from
the AutoPackage install?

Having a blast with this app so far :)

Hi Eric,

I replied before but it didn't seem to get through. I think I have found
a problem with the sheetcamlibs package. Try
downloading and installing the sheetcamlibs package again.

If you still get the error, open a terminal and enter the following:
sudo dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq sheetcamlibs
You will probably have to enter your password.
Hopefully that should force dpkg to delete the package.

Sorry about that,
Les

Yeah, not much said about EMC there. And there was a mention of Realtime
NT!!!
NT is a pretty old technology and; where do you get it? I bet it ain't free
either.
Looks like it might evolve into a really good site. Hopefully, they'll get
educated.
The main attraction of EMC, at first glance is that it's free.
After one digs into it though, the quality, configurability and stability
take center stage.
I just hope they don't follow the path of FUD like many other industries do
when
dealing with the Linux/Windows situation.

As a PC tech, I've seen several older Compaqs, especially laptops do as you
describe.
Sometimes they will freeze for seconds at a time then continue.
And with a freshly and properly installed OS with good drivers, etc.
I know this isn't what you want to hear but consider replacing the machine.
Maybe if a friend has a more 'generic' PC and likes the iPaq, y'all could
trade.
Someone surfing the net and doing email wouldn't be as endangered as someone
using it to control a machine with strong electric motors and sharp cutters
;^)

I'm using an IBM Netvista found in a dumpster. Due to its small size (what
we call
a laptop-in-a-box), I expected similar behaviour. It's a Celeron 800/256MB
but it
runs EMC without a hitch. Maybe check junk/second-hand stores, too.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help,
Emory

[Emc-users] gcode and coordinate system explanation needed.

2008-06-22 Thread Dirk
Hi all, well, just deleted my question. When double checking all the facts,
reproducing the problems, I got some clue about what was going wrong. But
there is still 1 thing unclear. My postprocessor, NX5, made with
postbuilder, automatically adds a G28 at the start of the program. Since I
have a very slow z-axis, which can also get dangerously close to the
workpiece if it hase a tool in it, I don't want the G28 to go to 0,0,0. I
configured emc so that a homing sequence will put the x and y stage at 10,10
and the z-stage at 180. Can I get emc to use G28 to go these coordinates? Or
do I have to remove the G28 from the postprocessor and put G00 X10 Y10 Z180
in it? It seems that G28 Z100, for instance, first goes to 0,0,0 and than
goes to 0,0,100.

I love this stuff, but there is so much to figure out. Especially since I
have to configure a postprocessor and a cnc system at the same time. I am
never sure which one is misconfigured.

I haven't taken the time to really analyze your message, but maybe this
will help.

I have my home setup to place the machine in a safe position for a tool
or workpiece change. For my stepper machine without home sensors, I jog
the machine to the home position (or pose) and home (button) each axis.
For my machines with home sensors, the home pose is set by the sensor
position and the .ini settings. I just press to home button for each
axis, and I am done. I home the machine each time I start EMC. A retract
path and g28 is on my mental check list for the end of each tool use.

For the part zero, I use "touch off" for each axis for tool 1. Then, I
use the tool table to set the rest of the tools in relation to tool 1.
At first, I tried using touch off to part-zero each tool, but it doesn't
work that way. There is only one touch off entry for each axis and it is
independent of tool selection. To set the tool table, I jog tool 2 and
up to the part zero and physically touch off (with a piece of paper and
subtract or add .003"). _Don't_ use the touch-off button here. I read
the axis positions and use these numbers in the tool table.

The home button acts differently if you have home sensors or not. If you
have sensors, you can hit the home button and the machine will jog to
the home position. Without home sensors, EMC will reset your home
setting, which for me, is _bad_. Once I set home at EMC start up, I stay
away from the home button. I only use g28 in MDI mode while doing
setups.

I am still working on my procedures and there may be some errors here.

I did a compound curve test part in delrin on my mill and roughed with
an end-mill because it will cut faster and I wanted to spare the
ball-mill for when I really need it. I believe the cutting pressure on a
ball-mill is higher so you may run the risk of pulling the part or
stalling an axis if you rough with it. The proof is in the putting
though.

Use a end mill for roughing unless there is very little to remove. Ball mills
don't cut
as well. Likewise use a drill to remove most of a hole the final size it with

Re: [Emc-users] gcode and coordinate system explanation needed.

2008-06-22 Thread John Thornton
G28 goes to a predefined position (home as defined in parameters 5156-5166).

To make G28 go to 0,0,100 you must home the machine there which will become
0,0,0. Then a G28Z0 with no space will home the Z axis only. The space between
the G28 and the axis must call up an undocumented feature...

2008-06-22 Thread John Thornton
Dirk,

What you are seeing is the waypoint function of G28.
G28 X5 Z5 will move to X5 and Z5 from the present position then move to X0 Z0.
This is for obstacle avoidance.
G28 will always end up in the home position.

[Emc-users] Shutdown during milling

2008-06-22 Thread Andrew Ayre
I have noticed that perhaps one time in five Linux will partially
shutdown during milling. It's a bit hard to describe but the Gnome
desktop is replaced with a text screen of what looks like the tail end
of the bootup sequence:

Operation [OK]
Another operation [OK]
Running startup scripts in /etc/rc.local [OK]

There are no messages and EMC2 continues to generate pulses - which
cause the X and Y axis to move the spindle in a straight line. A quick
press of the power button turns off the power.

I booted and checked dmesg, user.log, syslog and messages. Nothing was
recorded to indicate a problem. The syslog only had the 30 minute marks
in it.

Any hints on how I can start to debug this problem?

I'm running EMC2 pre-2.2.0 and Ubuntu Gutsy.

thanks, Andy

Thanks John and Kirk,

I will use an end mill for roughing.

I have a few random thoughts.

Try running memtest86 overnight. It's on the initial boot menu.

Since it drops out of X, check the X log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log or
similar).

If the problem is new, it's almost certainly a hardware problem.
You may have to resort to swapping hardware around to find it.

This may be a crash of the X-windows server. You didn't, by any
chance, hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace? That is the command to kill the
X server. If X is actually crashing, the message file is in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log and may show some useful info.

There are also "bull nose" or radius end mills that are halfway
between square end mills and full ball mills. These have the
advantage that there is no point to chip. Since the radius is
less than that of the entire end mill, you have to calculate
things differently for these.
