[Emc-users] Datron Pulsed Ethanol Mist

2009-05-28 Thread Kirk Wallace
I stumbled on some Datron videos and noticed quit a few interesting
features on their machines. One is the pulsed mist shown here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csfIUFsfe-0

at 5:00 and 6:05. My mist tip drips fluid after the mist turns off. I
have been thinking I should make a tiny check valve for the nozzle, so
that when my mist turns on, I get fluid instantly, instead of after a
few seconds. Has anyone tried this?

Another feature they claim is a cleaner work area. It doesn't seem to me
that the mist will handle this, so there must be other air nozzles? If
so, these machines must go through big bunches of air.

Using an Ethanol based mist, must have a lot of hazard, corrosion and HR
issues?

I couldn't help but bob my head to the music, I hope no one could see.
Can we integrate music and iTunes to the linuxcnc.org site?

[Emc-users] WITS (Wichita Industrial Trade Show)

2009-05-28 Thread Stuart Stevenson
Gentlemen,
Look at this website - http://witshow.org/

Is there any interest in preparing a machine or three for this show?
There would be a need for machine preparation. There would be a
need for booth population.
Provided there is enough interest I will provide the booth at the
show and cover show expenses. I would need volunteers to assist in the
machine prep and booth population. The booth is 10 feet X 10 feet so
it would be easy to overfill.
The MVJr would be a good candidate. It has a tool changer and could
do rigid tapping and is a recognized brand.
The Dahlih would be a good candidate. It would clean up and show well.
I would try to have a B/P cnc to retrofit. This would show a stepper machine.
I could see a Max 5 axis running demos.
I could see a small gantry running demos.
I could see a small plastic framed mill running demos.
Other small machines (lathes and mills) would show well also.
A robot handing out literature would be nice.
We would have video of other machines running.
This would be fun and I believe would generate an unbelievable
amount of interest. We may even make the local TV news. :)
   Primetime here we come :)

Do I make a new hal.io file for my machine and that

I would then call this new .io file from the .ini file?

Do I make a new hal.io file for my machine and that

HostMot2 is different from the original HostMot configuration in that all FPGA
I/O pins are GPIO unless special functions (like encoders or PWM generators)
are enabled.

The original HostMot had only 4 axis of PWM and encoder signals on P2, leaving
P3 and P4 as GPIO only.

The SVST8_4IM2 HostMot2 configuration follows the same pinout for encoder and
PWM connections as the original HostMot but adds the capability of 4 more
encoders and PWM generator on P3. It also adds and index mask inputs and 4
hardware step generators on P4.

Because these special functions are only enabled if requested, P3 can be left
as GPIO just like the original HostMot configuration.

For example if you invoke the HostMot2 driver with :

loadrt hm2_pci config=firmware=hm2/5i20/SVST8_4IM2.BIT num_encoders=4
num_pwmgens=4 num_stepgens=0

You will get a configuration that matches the pinout of the old HostMot
firmware, (encoders and PWM generators 0 through 3 enabled on P2, but P3 and
P4 left as GPIO)

Note the there are further HAL file changes needed as the old HostMot driver
hardwired the GPIO pins as 8 out and 16 in on P3 and P4 to match the 7I37
pinout. The HostMot2 driver needs to have the pin directions setup to suit the
daughtercard/application

I would then call this new .io file from the .ini file?
A little direction here and I wont bother you guys

Re: [Emc-users] Mesa-Hm2

2009-05-28 Thread Eric H. Johnson
Terry,

The new m5i20 and Mesa drivers in general are much more flexible than the
old m5i20 driver. If you look at configs/hm2-servos/5i20.ini, you will see
the following at the beginning of the file:

DRIVER=hm2_pci
BOARD=5i20
CONFIG=firmware=hm2/5i20/SVST8_4.BIT num_encoders=3 num_pwmgens=3
num_stepgens=0

This maps through to hm2-servo.hal, specifically the line:
loadrt [HOSTMOT2](DRIVER) config=[HOSTMOT2](CONFIG)

The first two lines are obvious. The third line is specifying how many of
each component type to allocate. The P2 and P3 connectors are basically the
same except for the channel number, because both can be interfaced with
boards such as the m7i33 for encoders and analog reference signals for the
servo amplifiers.

Thus up to 8 motors and encoders can be handled by a single m5i20 if you
have a configuration needing that many channels. If you have fewer, then the
pins corresponding to the unused channels may be used as general purpose
I/O. The sample configuration only uses 3 pwm generators and encoders, thus
6 pins are available on the P2 connector for gpio (25, 27, 33, 37, 41, 45)
and all 24 pins on P3 are available for gpio. Each gpio may be configured as
either input or output.

After loading a configuration, do dmesg to see the actual pin assignments
and pin names.

Regards,
Eric

For example if you invoke the HostMot2 driver with :

 loadrt hm2_pci config=firmware=hm2/5i20/SVST8_4IM2.BIT num_encoders=4
 num_pwmgens=4 num_stepgens=0

You will get a configuration that matches the pinout of the old HostMot
firmware, (encoders and PWM generators 0 through 3 enabled on P2, but P3
 and
 P4 left as GPIO)

Note the there are further HAL file changes needed as the old HostMot
 driver
hardwired the GPIO pins as 8 out and 16 in on P3 and P4 to match the 7I37
pinout. The HostMot2 driver needs to have the pin directions setup to suit
 the
 daughtercard/application
Note also that the actual GPIO numbers will change. Since the hm2
firmware allows all pins to be used as GPIO, the first connector (P2 I
think) is GPIO 0-23, then 24-47 on P3, then 48-71 on P4. The GPIO number
for a particular pin doesn't change when you enable or disable advanced
functions, so the first I/O on P3 is gpio.24. Another artifact is that
the inputs and outputs share the same set of numbers (ie, GPIO.24 is the
first one on P3, regardless of whether it's set for input or output).

I'm working on a converter to turn 5i20 configs into hm2_5i20 configs, but
it's going pretty slowly. I'm not sure when (or if) it will be done.

I would then call this new .io file from the .ini file?
A little direction here and I wont bother you guys
anymore. The last statement was probably inaccurate.

 Thanks

Stuart is correct about the small/hobby mill vibe people
get from all the Y-tube videos of people spinning tape
on the end of a stepper motor or mills running at 30ipm rapids.
I was one of those people till I saw the Mazak run at Rolands
last year.

The JR will take up less room than you think. If you are going to

Groan! Didn't I just LEAVE Wichita?

It seems as if a few people left a few things in Wichita. They need
to return and get them. The show would be a good time to do that. :)
Maybe you are not one of the people that needs to return but I
think Wichita is a nice place to be. :)

 10 x 10' is not going to accomodate 3 full-size machines. Isn't the MV
 Jr. almost
a 10' cube all by itself? I think maybe the Dahlih OR a Bridgeport is
 going to pretty much
fill the booth, with a little table to hold literature and a banner.

If someone with a product to sell would also purchase a booth then
the EMC2 crowd would have a 20' X 10' booth. hint hint wink wink

Planning on getting out of machining and into retrofitting?

I am not planning on getting into retrofitting but I think the
first display should be a top notch display. EMC2 is ready for much
larger machines than the regular hobby size mill. Just because it is
almost perfect for a small mill does not disqualify it for the large
mill.

The description of the show seemed to indicate that it would cater to
industrial purchasers and vendors. Would EMC2 be a good fit for this
show? I have confidence that EMC2 can run complex machines. I'm just not
sure most people in the market for complex CNC machines are right for
EMC2 (yet).
