Matt, thanks for a clarification. I
do not think that a plastic AK receiver
would work well, but it looks like an AR lower has different
 strength
 requirements.

  Igor,

From a technical standpoint only (I'll leave the
 politics out of this),
the AR-15 lower receiver (which he successfully printed
 in ABS plastic -
see www.defensedistributed.com) is the portion which
 houses the fire
control group.  Most are made of 7075 Al forgings,
 or CNC machined from
billet.  However, a few companies offer injection
 molded varieties which
work just fine.  I think the original Armalite
designers used 7075 to be on
the safe side, not because they had to.  With some
 adjustments
reinforcements, it is probably possible to 3d print a
 plastic AR lower
which would function perfectly.  I seem to recall
 3d printed ABS is about
70% as strong as molded ABS so some minor structural
 reinforcements are
probably in order.  No selective laser sintering
 or other expensive 3d
  printing processes required.

And yes, that article is obviously political.
 However, there are a few
others on the subject (search 3d printer, defense
 distributed, etc) that
present the facts more clearly.  I think the
 wired.com article that I
read wasn't too bad, in case you want to read more on
 the subject.

 Dave,
The knee typically isn't under CNC control on a knee mill. You move
it up/down manually, lock it, re-touch off, and continue a program.
Just wondering if its possible to keep track of the Z location w/o
causing LCNC from running into the soft limits.
 ...

In my previous work I've been using two different CNC machines - factory
built - with the Z operating the knee. One Deckel Maho and one Abene. I
know at least four CNCified Bridgeport clones with knee operation.

I also now one machine that operates both the knee and the quill
simultaneously. Runs like a charm. :)

[Emc-users] subroutines and run from line

2012-10-16 Thread Jon Elson
My production Bridgeport mill runs an older version, 2.0.4~pre,
built from the git repository. To upgrade this system, I may
have to replace the computer, it is pretty aged and limited in
memory and CPU speed.

Anyway, I ran the following program last night:

N10 G61

N20 O100 SUB
N30 G01 F10 Z-0.02
N40 G04 P2
N50 M7
N60 G04 P2
N70 M9
N80 G04 P1
N90 G01 F10 Z.25
N100 O100 ENDSUB

N2020 G01 X8.364 Y-1.286 F60.0
N2030 O100 CALL
N2040 Y-1.443 F60.0
N2050 O100 CALL
N2060 Y-1.599 F60.0
N2070 O100 CALL
and so on, for 500 more iterations.

This program is for a prototype soldering robot. So, the O100 sub
pushes the soldering tip down onto a connection, waits a moment
for it to heat, then feeds solder (M7) for a moment, dwells, and
then raises up. This works fine when you run (R) the program, but
when you try to run from line at one of the (implied) G1 moves,
it makes that move and then just sits there. Does the run from line
prevent the interpreter from discovering the subroutine, or is
there some other reason for the problem? Will a 2.5.x version
also do this?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: [Emc-users] Knee mill w/ encoder on knee

2012-10-16 Thread Matthew Herd
Sven,

How did you fit the knee motor? I'm considering it myself but looking for some
more details. I figure I'd have to mount knee limits on both ends of travel,
and figure out how to fix the motor.

[Emc-users] OT - CNC Workshop not to be hosted by Digital Machinist next year

2012-10-16 Thread Jon Elson
I just got word from George Bulliss that he won't be hosting the CNC
Workshop that has been held in Ann Arbor for the last 3 years.
I'd hate to see that all-CNC meeting go away forever. Anybody
have any ideas?

Jon

Did he give any reasons as to why?
