Jarl,
I'd like that.
Regarding building a foo-into-g-code wizard, I think it's a great idea. I
suspect it will be something developers are interested in and users want.

p.s. I don't think the sourceforge mail server likes me very much. I've
gotten this error twice now, trying to send this message:
emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net
SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT
TO:emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net:

550-Several RFCs state that you are required to have a postmaster

550-from domains whose servers reject the postmaster address.

Hey Sebastien,
I tried several applications to convert dxf files to gcode but was
unimpressed, after several days of testing different apps I decided to
write my own application.
The Parsing of dxf and creating g-code is easy, the hard part is
optimizing the toolpaths for speed and other parameters.
The application is written in python and uses vpython for
visualization.
The work isn't yet at a point where I am comfortable in sharing it with
normal users but if you are interested I can send you a copy later
today, naturally the work is all released under GPL.
As a side note some of the functionality could be merged into Axis at a
later stage if there is interest.

Yep, saw [EMAIL PROTECTED] thing on /.
I looked over the reprap pages and I am curious if the software can
take a model and then
export the extrusion path in something close to g-code. Heck I'll
write a translator
if needed.
Most of the cnc cad programs I use are designed to create tool paths
for removing
material, not laying it down.
Outside of this I see no reason why a emc machine could not be so
configured to do this.
Could it be as simple as connecting the extrusion enable to emc's
spindle on output?
In principle it's doable, in practice the other devs and I won't be
working on that side of the project until after the 1.0 release. I'll
answer questions about the driver (once I've crawled over it more
carefully), and provide a loaner extruder head and pcb, but getting emc
to run it isn't our priority right now. After we get the 1.0 release out
the door, I'm much happier thinking about it.
My personal feature request/daydream for emc is to be able to generate
g-code from .stl and .dxf files. I think I've got 2 days left before my
Meshcam demo expires. I have heard good things about Mach3, and may buy
it to use for g-code creation.

looks like it'd be a lot easier just to go buy a hot-melt glue gun
at the hardware store. ;-)

That's how our prototypes worked; hot glue guns and erector set
technology.
Eventually, though, you want to load the feedstock in as a big reel
of 3mm
filament (aka plastic welding rod), just because it's a good form
factor to
work with.
