I was not referring to the model gvp_615. This vise is easily mounted on
its side. The Kurt 675 and 688 have machined side rails, not the entire
side. This allows the vise to be aligned more easily on an angle plate.
This is just a minor difference. The Kurt vises also have an o ring
feature under the movable jaw that causes the jaw to move down when
tightening keeping parallels tight under the work piece.

In that case you "need" the swivel...

The vises with machined sides are a different model vise designed to be
mounted on it's side if needed.

Everybody I've talked to has had nothing but good things to say about
the Glacern. I probably won't use the swivel much either, but my Dad
said he would pay for it, If I got it.

I had been considering a Kurt D688, which is nearly identical in
every aspect, but more money:
 http://www.kurtworkholding.com/manual-vise-opening-p-1205-l-en.html

If I had a little more money, I would get this one:
 http://www.glacern.com/gpv_615

Also, Parlec seems to be just as proud of their vises, as Kurt is,
and their prices reflect that:

I was looking at this one:
http://www.shars.com/products/view/8139/6quot_690V_CNC_Milling_Machine_Vise_4quot

I've asked questions about it on other newsgroups, but nobody knows
anything about it. I know to steer clear of their cheaper versions,
because of bad castings, and poor fit and finish. I want something I
can use pretty much right out of the box, with very little additional
machining.

BTW, the Shars vise, and the GMT vise are almost identical... There
is only 3 differences I can find:
 1) The stickout of the leadscrew, the Shars is 18.94" and the GMT
is 19.25".
 2) The Shars weighs 82 pounds, vs 81 pounds for the GMT.
 3) The scallop running down the length of the Shars.

I'm looking at getting a new milling vise, and I'm looking for
recommendations.

Has anybody used the Glacern GSV-690 6" Standard Vise?

had.  It's cheaper than a real Kurt, and it's "SUPPOSED" to be just as good.

number my other vise 2 to 1. I would buy another one when I need one. I
have an old swivel but never use it.
