Okay. I retract my flash drive idea.

Hell NO! That's even WORSE! Tips are "earnings", which requires a
whole new level of tax paperwork!
And, once you get on the payroll deduction bandwagon, you have to close
the business to get off. If you think sales tax paperwork is onerous,
you have NO IDEA what the payroll stuff looks like.

Although that's true, I think trying to do anything that
smacks of system administration while on the show floor is
doomed to humiliating failure.

Most of the time, flash drives Just Work under Linux, but
there are a wide variety of flash drives and some require
specific care & feeding. All of us have the personality flaw
that requires us to solve problems and there's nothing more
compelling than Showing Off Our Sysadmin Chops.

The inevitable result is being elbow-deep in the guts of the
OS, desperately trying to write the victim's USB drive,
while causing untold collateral damage. Worst case: neither
his USB drive nor your system are ever quite the same
afterward -and- you blew half an hour getting there.

Better to keep a stack of CDs under the table and hand one
out to each interested prospect. While the CD might not be
readable in his drive, you can fix that up after the fact.

I would not, under any circumstances, use a Windows box for
USB-drive duplication, as you'd almost certainly propagate
the malware brought to you by an unsuspecting victim. Case
in point:

I agree. One dollar will not deter anyone who is seriously
interested. Since you have paid for a vendor booth you
can "sell" if you wish. Ohio state sales tax is another issue
however. If you are judged to be commercial it can be a
mess. PMDX does not sell in Ohio for that reason. Perhaps
a "tip jar" would work.

interested to try
EMC will just happen to have a USB pen on them.

Just burn some CD's. Charge a minimal amount to cover copying cost, like a
dollar or so.
You should also point out that they are free to download the image from the web

PROBABLY? This statement is very disturbing to me since in all my 15
years of using and advocating Linux I've never seen one (virus). Systems
broken into from the Intenet yes, but no virus.

Running dd or some such in Linux is not going to introduce ANY virus to
a storage device nor is it going to read and execute infected file from it.

Ubuntu can make flash drive bootable with Ubuntu Live CD on it.
It is under System->Administration->Create a USB startup disk.
So, if you just point it to EMC2 .iso, it will create EMC2 live flash drive.

Alex.

Given the ubiquity of flash drive devices, being prepared to upload
an ISO image to a users device might be a cheap option. Sure would
appeal to tech savy type living on dialup.

Good thoughts. How does linux react to a Sansa U3 device? In
windows it looks like a USB CDROM device and runs the installler.

Gentle persons:

Copying to user-provided flash drives instead of handing out CDs is a
great idea, especially because it makes the user participate actively
rather than just grab reflexively.

Just remember that

1) it is incredibly easy to propagate viruses and similar badness via
USB flash drives, although *probably* less so with a Linux host than a
Windows host. I'd want to do the copying on an isolated, protected host.

2) the .iso file is ~700MB. I'm always surprised to discover how much
space I've already used on whatever USB flash drive I happen to have in
my pocket and I usually find I have to delete something to make room for
the latest. The clock will be ticking away while making sure there is
adequate space and while actually writing the .iso file.

Neither of these issues is a show-stopper, but I always expect that the
worst is most likely to happen on those occasions I'm dealing with a
live audience (a variant of Murphy's Law?) and I've rarely been
disappointed :-!
