Yeah, it was getting ridiculous. It'll probably work on 12.04 LTS... ;-)

I ended up using the wireless bridge. Had one laying around, handily
enough.

The odd thing, it would work with WEP. It was having problems with the
encryption algorithm for WPA/2. Had no problems communicating with the
router, just could pass the WPA/2 password correctly. I've got an
identical card in a Winders box, and it works fine there. Go figure. Not
sure if the problem was the driver, ndiswrapper or the wpa_supplicant. I
finally gave up on it after wasting almost 5 hours and went to the bridge.

Re: [Emc-users] Wireless card problems

2013-09-23 Thread Dave Cole
I just setup a TP-Link TL-WN722N USB N Wireless adapter on Ubuntu 10.04
with LinuxCNC.

They are about $16.00 on Amazon. ( I have no idea how they can make
that and sell it for $16.00! )

There is a ath9k_htc driver installation program that is on sourceforge
and I tried that and that did not work for me so I removed it.

I followed the directions supplied in the first answer on this page to
get the driver installed.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/98844/how-do-i-get-a-tp-link-tl-wn722n-wireless-card-working
I used that exact version of compat-wireless also. I tried an earlier
version
and the atheros (ath9k_htc) driver was not an option with the earlier
version.

That got the driver loaded, but using "dmesg" after attaching the USB
device said it could not find the firmware file for the USB device.

I tried all kinds of things to compile a firmware file for the device
all to no avail. Then someone mentioned that
installing the package "linux-firmware" via the synaptic package manager
might work. So I installed version 1.34.14, I rebooted the computer and
the USB Wireless stick came up and ran.

WPA/2 is an option on the wireless settings. So it should work fine.
I'm currently setup with WEP (I live in the sticks.. )

Okay, but like I mentioned before, it still doesn't solve the problem of
being unable to use anything stronger than WEP on my wireless card. The
FiOS router I have works fine for what it does, and I get good reception in
both the house and the shop. I only "rent" the router, so I'd presume
Verizon might have something to say about me tinkering with it too much.

You must retain the router that Verizon gave you as the CE (Customer
Edge) device, otherwise you can't stream on demand video and the like.
However, you can disable its wireless port and install a WRT54G (about
half the cost of an RPi on eBay) with OpenWRT as your AP. You probably
want to configure the WRT with a static IP address. Then, running it in
AP mode, you simply connect one of its LAN ports via ethernet to the CE
router.

I have wasted money on WiFi PCI, PCMCIA and USB cards that had drivers
that didn't work with Linux. I've had the best luck with WRT54 class
routers with OpenWRT. The cost is about the same as a WiFi card,
especially considering the time saved in not having to flog dead horses.

fill the need for a 'cheap enough to use everywhere' WiFi device.

Mark:

I've used straight wireless, wireless via bridges as Eric suggests, and
also powerline ethernet to solve various connectivity problems at home and
at my kids' homes.

I reflashed several old Linksys router/access points which didn't support
bridging with open-source software (I forget whether I ended up liking
OpenWRT or DD-WRT better). Works a treat.

Many people deprecate powerline networking but the speeds have dramatically
improved and it is much less less accessible to blackhats. I won't conduct
business, financial or healthcare transactions over wireless links except
via VPN and that's yet another thing to set up.

That's not a bad idea. Copper from the machine to the bridge, and wireless
from the bridge to the router. I'll poke around for one of them too.

Thanks Eric.

Kent,

I missed that page during my fruitless searching. They do list some
Marvell drivers which is what the WG111v3 supposedly uses. I'll give them
a wack before I head off to the big box stores to peruse their offerings.

Thanks!

On a linuxcnc machine, I would go with a wireless bridge, aka access
point. Discussions of this in the archives. This saves you from
driver and latency issues. I just ordered one for my boss' home
computer, hoping he can handle the configuration.

Mark:

Just a comment, since I don't run wireless adapters on my 10.04 hosts.

I have managed over the years to help a friend who lives in penury on the
left coast get Linux + wireless working on several cast-off laptops he and
his significant other have received. For some of them he picked up el
cheapo USB-wireless adapters at Fry's. In any case, if the adapter does
work as-is I've usually been able to get it working with the aid of the
material on wireless.kernel.org. He prefers Linux Mint to Ubuntu so I'm
only guessing his earlier system was based on 10.04. In some cases, the
labor is significant, but I was always able to tell him enough by email to
get him going.

Generally speaking, the newer the kernel and its modules, the more likely
everything "just works." Yet another reason to abandon 10.04, even if one
doesn't care Ubuntu no longer supports it.

Kent

[Emc-users] Wireless card problems

2013-09-22 Thread Mark Wendt
Well, I'm in the market for a new wireless card or USB wireless. My old
Netgear WG111v3 worked great on my old DSL router which used WEP. We
recently upgraded to FIOS, and it uses WPA/2. Unfortunately, under Ubuntu
10.04 and ndiswrappers, it does not work at all with any kind of WPA. Many
fruitless hours spent yesterday trying to find a solution, only to find
that it's a no go.

Any recommendations for a wireless card or wireless USB that works with
10.04 and WPA/2?

Thanks,
Mark
