I love this idea, and if you get pictures, I would also like to make a
section at www.linuxcnc.org where we could properly present them.
There is atm a section with user machines in the wiki:
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Case_Studies
but these are all pictures for webreview, not for printing.

Everyone - The second email that just popped through made me realize
something - if you have a username you use on IRC or other forum include
that too _IF_ you want people to know that information.

Thanks - I'm probably going to end up with way too much anecdotal
information...luckily I am experienced at editing in my meat and potatoes
work :--)

Alex - I will definitely pass them along. I have one email so far but I
need to setup an FTP option as his pics must've been too big since the
preceeding email didn't come through, just the follow up description email.
I am hopeful that we can get a decent number of pics in time for the show,
hopefully everyone has their brooms out this weekend...(hint hint HINT) :--)

Re: [Emc-users] NAMES Backdrop Photos

2009-03-14 Thread Greg Michalski
Everyone -

I have setup an FTP account on my website to accept large files (like I
requested) since it seems my mailbox won't accept larger messages (I thought
I had paid for enhanced email but - evidently not).

I don't want to post the log-in information to the list since it is publicly
archived, but contact me off list at Greg Michalski {at]
distinctperspectives (dot) com and I will forward the log in information and
a basic walk through of how to use FTP if you haven't before (don't be
offended at the step by step nature if you are familiar, I wanted to have a
copy/paste and have it applicable to all levels of experience).

So if you have tried to send me something and it bounced contact me at the
email for the instructions or check your mail because I've already responded
to several people with the instructions for FTP.

Thanks for the early support, hopefully it continues and we have a stunning
professional looking display that will make a statement that EMC is robust,
and is here to stay. If (like me...) you haven't previously made any
contributions to opensource development, this is an easy way to get started
by showing off what you've done with the software.

Thanks!

Re: [Emc-users] NAMES Backdrop Photos

2009-03-16 Thread Greg Michalski
Update from the photo front -

Ok, I have now sorted out the multitude of issues which have plagued me from
the start of this endeavor. I knew I had purchased a large mailbox amount
on my hosting package - only problem was when I set it up _I_ didn't allot
it a sufficient size, so instead of a 100MB mailbox I had a 10mb mailbox and
75MB unallocated. To top it all off I had set my client to leave copies on
the server for 5 days so once it filled Saturday into Sunday, it was tits
up.

SO - If you have tried to contact me and gotten a bounce back message or no
response whatsoever, and are still willing to provide images, go ahead and
contact me again. Everyone who has gotten a hold of me has gotten the FTP
instructions and successfully sent images, except for the most recent to be
mailed the instructions (one person). But the box was full from sometime
late Sunday (east coast time).

I apologize for the unprofessionalism this started off with. I made too
many assumptions, thereby making an @$$ out of myself when all I wanted to
do was help and use a talent and equipment at my disposal to promote EMC.
This sort of error would have been catastrophic had it been a full fledged
business (which one day I intend it to be).

So my apologies to everyone, especially those who put up with trying to get
files to me and being patient while I tried working out my bugs. I have a
decent amount of pictures, but would like at least another 5 machines to
showcase. Some of the machines received so far are very inspiring for me in
seeing the creativity not only in the work they are producing but in the
machines themselves.

So to those who haven't donated pics, or have tried and got fed up with the
hassle, I hope you will give it another shot. To those who have - thank
you. Dale is really investing a lot of his time in making the EMC presence
strong and I commend him. I wish my body could stand/sit in one place long
enough to take more shifts on the floor, this is the best way for me to
contribute, so again, one more shot and please accept my humble apologies,
this snafu was all on me.

Yours humbly in open source and open honesty,

Greg Michalski

I don't think you owe any apologies - these things happen. I for one am
thrilled to see that you are doing this, regardless of any minor hitches.

I have some pictures of my EMC2 powered Shoptask lathe/mill on my
website at: http://jmkasunich.com/cgi-bin/blosxom/shoptask?flav=index
Instead of me dumping a bunch of stuff on you, take a look and let me
know if anything looks good. I have the 10 megapixel originals for most
if not all of the images...

BTW, I'm pretty sure I have the original (rather large) movie file for
the variable-pitch, variable-diameter threading. Might be fun to be use
that instead of a screensaver. (The YouTube version won't work at the
show unless you have a fast internet connection, but the movie version
just sits on your disk and runs anywhere.)

Regards,

John Kasunich

You can use the DownloadHelper plugin to Firefox to save Youtube videos
to your hard drive, to watch them later without a network connection.

Of course, there are other reasons to prefer JMK's original movie over
the Youtube one.

If somebody is going to have movies running, I think there is one of
Chris' 5-axis machine that ought to be shown, too.
I thought that was QUITE cool!

2009-03-17 Thread Steve Stallings
Note about NAMES, and every other show I have been
to lately: Attaching things to the walls or any other part
of the facility is not allowed. You must use self supporting
displays. Also, the supplied table coverings are thin plastic
that is easily torn if you try to slide a heavy object around
on your table. The tables are standard folding units that
will support a couple of hundred pounds if placed over
the leg, but not in the middle.

While we're against a wall, I think we're required to have everything
freestanding. (I'll try to check.) Besides, I think folks will want
to look at the photos up close and read the captions, so we can't
have them too far away. We have the space--perhaps the booth is an
open U shape?

Re: [Emc-users] NAMES Backdrop Photos

2009-03-17 Thread Steve Stallings
NAMES booths are 10' by 10' normally. Booth B15 shows
on the floor plan as having a sliver of open space on one
side, probably a mandated access to some safety related
equipment on the facility wall. Otherwise you have only
10' of frontage for access. This is why I was hoping we
could juggle and get 3 adjacent booths for PMDX, PICO,
and EMC and thus share open space and allow people
to walk through the booth while still having displays on
the front.

The two supplied tables per booth are 2.5' by 8' and can be
arranged as you wish, including as an L that slightly exceeds
the 10' side dimension. Putting a table on each side results in
an alley 5' wide down the middle, and this gets crowded easily.
An open L with one table along the back wall would likely
be best, unless the "sliver" is wide enough for people to
walk back and forth between booths.

Re: [Emc-users] NAMES Backdrop Photos

2009-03-17 Thread Greg Michalski
Feel free to deposit movies on the FTP site also if movies are desired on
site. There's space. As for the hanging/attaching issue, I am mounting all
the photos on foam core and typically make an easel base when I do items
like this. They can be placed on tables, at the base of tables, or I do
have some PVC tube around the house that I could bring down and make an
impromptu trellis of sorts.
