Probably just lack of attention. Sinking outputs are not available on the 7I37COM because the outputs have a V+ common so are all "sourcing" or "PNP" type outputs. If you are making you own machine, this output mode (sourcing) is safer as it will not enable relays or other loads in case of the most likely type of "short" failure which is a short to ground. Likewise sinking inputs are safest in that a short to ground will be interpreted as an inactive input so for example in a normal NC limit switch situation a short to ground will be interpreted as an activated limit switch (causing a fault, as it should) Of course this does not help if you need to be compatible with existing equipment that needs sinking outputs or sourcing inputs > > -- > Viesturs > > If you can't fix it, you don't own it. > http://www.ifixit.com/Manifesto > > -- > Live Security Virtual Conference > Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and > threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond. I believe the inputs of the 7i37 are isolated from everything, including power and ground. Since the signal source is already connected to the same ground as the 7i37 power supply you could connect the signal source to the (+) pin of the 7i37 input, and connect the (-) pin of the 7i37 input to power GND. This assumes your signal source is capable of driving the input to the minimum 4-volt signal level required by the 7i37 input. Some outputs do a better job driving to ground than they do a positive voltage. In this case, you could connect the (+) pin of the 7i37 input to +5V, and the (-) pin of the 7i37 input to the signal source. You will have to use the right hal output since the polarity will be inverted. You need to connect GND. All 7I37/7I37TA inputs and output are isolated from PC GND and from each other. Note, the 7I37COM is different, it has common + side on outputs and common - on inputs So for a active high input you connect INx- to GND and INx+ to the signal (that also has GND as its common) > > -- > Viesturs > > If you can't fix it, you don't own it. > http://www.ifixit.com/Manifesto > > -- > Live Security Virtual Conference > Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and > threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond. In which case (from memory, trust but verify) you need to set up a voltage across the two input pins associated with each input. You wouldn't want to go to ground on the 7i37 side because that messes up the isolation. You probably will want to use your own ground on the equipment side as the low voltage.
